Bro I stood in line for a Solitude Aeturnus shirt for almost 2 hours. Been to plenty of fests big and small have NEVER seen a line move slower in my life.
The main problem I saw was that on Friday the line started gathering around 10AM but they didn't actually start selling anything until 2-3pm. There was no communication regarding when they were actually going to start selling and most of the people in line didn't realize nothing was being sold. The line "appeared" to move but that was only due to people up front getting tired of waiting and leaving. Why did it take so long to start selling? Not sure. T-shirts were hung and ready to sell. Of the 3 girls mentioned in the video, only 1 was actually moving around and doing something while we all waited for them to actually start selling so it appeared there was never a plan to start until 2/3 pm. So my biggest gripe was put up a sign or something saying that or, if that was not the intension then get a new crew next year who would be ready to work.
Another great video in the cane Nate! For some strange reason I, as well, have been listening to Solitude Aeturnus for the last couple of days and weeks, talk about a coincidence, huh?! I hope soon to see your personal top-10 doom-metal albums in a near future. Have a great Easter and cheers from Denmark.
Cool to see this Nate, SA have been on my shortlist to deep dive on my channel for over 2 years but I kept bumping them in favor of other bands... Glad to see you beat me to it !! If I may add though, Robert Lowe will be a guest on my show on Friday 4/5/24 at 6:00 PM EST for a super deluxe deep dive straight from the horses mouth !! Great job on this episode regardless though !!!!
It's sorta bizarre that with the whole "doom revival" thing happening these days, bands like Solitude Aeternus are just forgotten by the modern audience. Like a lot of bands these days (not just doom) are so focused on fraternizing with their modern peers that little to no homage is paid to the real pioneers. That goes for the fans as well. Anyway, have you heard New Dark Age by Solstice? I think it came out in '98. Its another hidden gem in doom that is full of huge riffs and great melody. Vocalist on that record has a distinct, haunting voice as well.
I came here to mention Solstice as well, partially because they're a great underrated/forgotten doom band, and also because I got these two bands confused for years, lol. Solitude is better but Solstice has some great stuff. I like their newest album from a few years ago quite a bit as well. great video as usual Nate!
I love Solitude. I saw them in Chicago in 2007 and met John and Rob at the hotel and they took a picture with me and were super friendly as some of us chatted with them. I honestly can’t believe they finally came back, and I hope the positive reception makes them put out more material. Alone and the live dvd were a heck of a close last time though.
I kept an eye out for you before, during and after the Solitude Aeternus set but totally missed you! The band of course had my full attention during the set -- I was just on the outer edge of the pit. They were best in fest for sure. I stuck around Saturday for Traveler, Early Moods, Sumerlands, Cirith Ungol, Tank, Dawnbringer and Wytch Hazel. Andy said he saw you in the t-shirt line -- I was curious if Solitude had a patch but wasn't willing to wait 90+ min to find out. I was aware of Solitude Aeternus in the 90s, but it wasn't until after I turned 30 -- something about getting that much closer to mortality and the VOID that makes one crave doom -- that I got into them in the 00s. I had just written a blurb on Through the Darkest Hour in my current 1994 album countdown, which I currently think is their finest hour (56:50 to be exact). It took me a while to realize it, but I agree that they have better riffs per pound than Candlemass, Trouble, Saint Vitus and Pentagram in general, though I do love The Obsessed's The Church Within from that same year just a bit more.
There were so many folks there who I didn’t realize were there until several days later. Not sure how that happened but I was slipping in and out of the aether somehow
Candlemass 'Nightfall' and Trouble 'Psalm 9' are unbeatable in my world, but Solitude Aeturnus comes damn close, especially with 'Beyond the Crimson Horizon'... Lately the new Stygian Crown album 'Funeral for a King' has restored my faith in epic doom; what an amazing album! 👌👌
Hey Nate, I did a deep dive on Solitude with the Heavy Metallurgy guys almost 2 years ago now. Amazing band and they were my intro to doom metal really and a high school favorite. I'm really looking forward to watching this and I need that shirt :D
Love Solitude Aeturnus! One of my favorite Candlemass albums is King of the Gray Islands with Lowe. Ghoultown with Lyle rules too man, really dig them. Also Die Healing from Saint VITUS is my favorite too. Nate, I also want to say I saw you fill in for Bret in Pittsburgh. As far as modern era Doom is concerned Pallbearer is my favorite. I heard Spirit Adrift not long after that night and it made sense once I heard SA and boy they were lucky to Gatecreeper on the bill. Riff on man!
Oh yes they are. Both the best and most underrated. Top 3 band in general for me. All their albums are great but the first two are out of this world. Epic hymns of tribulations. Saw them twice when they came in 2006 here in Greece. It was a fantastic experience. It pained me so much that I could not be in Houston. I really hope all this will fuel their spark for a glorious comeback
Great vid Nate! I too prefer Solitude Aeturnus to Candlemass. Funny enough, I got introduced to them through Candlemass. I was watching "Documentary of Doom" on the "Live at Fryshuset 1990" DVD. At one point they show and praise Solitude Aeturnus covering Candlemass live! When I heard those guys, I had to stop the video and find who the hell they were. Brilliant and so underrated! Anyway, going back to your list, you didn't mention any band from the English doom/death metal scene, like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and early Anathema. You don't dig them?
The drums, on Def Leppard’s ‘Pyromania/Hysteria” were programmed. I say this, because I think I remember you praising the production on Hysteria - in the lead up to GATG release. If you’re gonna do it, ya gotta do it right. I agree. 🤘
Nice video, but hearing that 1997 is quite possibly the worse year in metal makes me smh. I can name at least 50 masterpieces that came out that year. Albums by Fates Warning, The Gathering,SYL,Memento Mori, Symphony X, Trivial Act,Hollow,Dimmu Borgir,Arcturus. Countless really. Not as impactful as Pantera's albums or whatever but still huge variety and originality
Holy shit! How did I miss this! I was there in the "VIP" seats (had a table assigned that would wobble and spill your beer if a heavy person walked by). It's too bad the weather screwed a bunch of the acts. I was there all days, strictly for SA, Watchtower and Queensryche. I'm in Texas and have been following local and Texas bands since '77. Did you ever see the live Solitude video from Poland? John Perez actually introduces a song as "the best song from our shittiest album". LOL.
Solitude A is one of if not the the most underrated bands in American metal history. A band I like twice as much as Candlemass. They don’t have a bad album but the first three albums make for a perfect 3 album run. John Perez is a genius. I agree that Solitude A is better than the other 4 and I love all those bands. That advice about a new maybe casual doom fan starting with Falling is really solid advice. The Pantera thing you mention is one thing that puts them above for me. The other thing is that they have much more dynamic and crushing guitars than the other 4 in my opinion. They also have a bit more that could entice fans of say Powerslave / Somewhere in Time era Maiden. It’s so crazy that you weren’t on the train with them until 2017 because if someone was to ask what I thought a direct influence on Curse of Conception would be I would 100% say Solitude Aeturnus. Great video man. Loved it.
@@BornTooNate when I was getting deeper into traditional doom around 2003 I really got hooked the most at first by bands that had this not quite doom metal / proto metal vibe. Bands that most doom fans find to be doom metal adjacent. Cirith Ungol, Manilla Road and Pagan Altar. I feel like Solitude Aeturnus was the perfect band to bring me from what I was listening to into a full on love for traditional doom metal. They have the dynamic that hooked me and became my gateway drug into Vitus and bands like Reverend Bizarre.
Another excellent episode with some great one-liners. Solitude Aeternus is one of those bands everyone praises but I just kept forgetting to check out besides a quick sample. Paused the episode halfway through to buy “Through the Darkest Hour” and then came back. 🤘
I am officially a loyal and devoted fan as of today. The fact that you are doing an episode on this highly underrated band...well...I Will Follow You Into the Dark.
When I was around 15, I was a Thrash/Death Metal fan. For Christmas, I had asked for an album by Solitude album. A Thrash band. My mother took the list I gave her, and I had Into the Depths of Sorrow. First listen, and I was not impressed by New Years they became one of my favourite bands of all time.
I go back and forth between the first two albums. I find it hard to make up my mind which one I like the best but maybe Crimson Horizon and yes Falling is the best song off the third album and it just hits you right away. Downfall takes a little to get into but it's Kick-Ass also.
I've been into SA since day one!!! Hung out with them a few times, killer band!! I have hardly ever had anyone talk about them except back in the day when the metal mags interviewed them.
yes, Solitude are the best heavy doom band so far. and unfortunately *downfall* has a crappy production, but there are gr8 songs like *the nameless* and *only this ...* on there so ...🔱 and 2. album has amazing bangers like ua-cam.com/video/PnKZBDnELOs/v-deo.htmlsi=SHqQaUihhIpyH0CT on it, too!
and if we talk about most underrated bands beyond comparison it must be INVOCATOR, just listen to their last album *through the flesh ...* and then tell me:
It for sure sounds like programmed drums on Lamp of Murmuur. But it must be intentional because it's so obvious sounding? Maybe a nod to early Greek black metal? I don't know though, cause it's so Immortal-ish.
By the way next tine you see that Dutch dude tell him Phrygian scales are known from ancient Greek times. There is ancient Greek music in Phrygian scales. The name comes from the ancient kingdom of Phrygia that was near Troy in what is modern Turkey nowadays. The kingdom was mentioned in Iliad too. That is probably why it has that majestic eastern sound and is associated with Egyptian atmosphere. The old Dutch people were the Frisians. No relation with the scales P.S. I think you are so right that they could be huge. I know it because they are one of the few bands that have such big appeal to our no metal friends. It is better for them if they listen the random Solitude tune than Metallica or Maiden. Their sound and drive and songs are hard to resist if you have the slightest association with heavier sounds
Getting to see Watchtower is pretty special. Almost zero chance they will ever perform over here in the UK. Ron Jarzombek is my pick for most underrated musician walking our planet.
I don't know Brother Nate...we agree on most things metal so far as I can tell. We part ways where Cannibal Corpse is concerned but most everything else we agree on. So when you said Solitude Aeturnis was better than ALL of the doom bands you mentioned I immediately put on the brakes and headed to the search bar. Listened for a bit and I don't know homie...I just glossed the surface I'm sure but still.

Oh wow, a mate taped me that that on a C90 with the first Harvey Milk album, haven’t heard either this century… must rectify! They’re all great ‘96 records but I’m thinking more of the trad HM scene, which felt like it was rising from the grave in ‘97. You had Slough Feg debuting in ‘96, but they didn’t really impact until after the scene was reignited in ‘97. Nocturnal Rites’ Ring of Steel was so wholesome and quaintly archaic it brought a tear to my eye.
