- This video shows you what happens to a glass of Coca Cola Original (regular coke) and a glass of Coca Cola Zero if you leave them out for a long time. A thick gooes sugary syrup remained after 100 days in the regular coke glass, and the coke zero almost completely evaporated during this time.

@@yamo511 Yup. I've never been a fan of artificial sweeteners. If ants won't touch it I'm not sure we should either 🤷♂️
@@-Graham Sugar feeds candida (natural bacteria in the body) candida then overgrows in the mouth, your immune system says; "hey, you're not meant to be here, begone!", candida then breaks down the calcium in your teeth to encase in self and shield itself from your immune system aka when your teeth gets fuzzy (plaque) a few hours after consuming sugars. Candida also effects your circulatory systems pH to supress the immune system and cause you to crave more sugar, and cause fatigue.
Artificial sweeteners such as Erythritol doesn't feed candida, and another one is Xylitol which actively removes candida. Reasons why ants don't touch it? it contains no energy / calories / no sustenance.
I was hoping you would show the mold cultures, I found it interesting that the mold is more diverse in the original Coca-Cola, but more mono in the Coke Zero.

Interesting that both seemed to develop both types of mould eventually, but the zero started with one type and the original with the other. Were the glasses close enough that spores from one glass could have jumped to the other?
If I'm not wrong spores travels kilometers right? So 100% possible
Good eye! The glasses were actually about 40cm (roughly 16 inches) apart from each other, so cross-contamination could definitely have happened.
Could have done, though I imagine the presence of sugar in the original allowed one type of mould to form whilst a different mould which doesn't need sugar to grow started on the zero.
@@PhotoOwl you also stuck your thumb in the first can. You probably opened the second one the same way. Embarrassingly careless!

Morale of the story is, if you leave your coke, someone or something will inevitably "drink" it
Amazing to see the different fungal assemblages that developed - and the Coke Zero completely evaporated to yield a dry glass, whereas the original coke didn't, even after three months! Would have also been very interesting to watch what happened after you poured the residual Coke syrup into the Coke Zero glass, and added water, when you let THAT evaporate over a couple months, with the combined non-aqueous components of the two varieties mixed. But still, this was awesome to watch! Thanks!

Natural airborne moulds and fermentation. This happens with some beers and breads.Pretty much there are natural moulds in the air anyway. It would have been more interesting to see if one actually became toxic because of the mould. I’d be more interested in that. It was always going to grow mould and feed the mould . I want to know how dangerous those moulds would be.

Interesting that in both cases, as the liquid evaporated, the mold growing on the surface of the liquids was deposited on the side of the glass furthest from the light source.

1:39 : Therhes A Smile Face At coca cola zero
Kind of surprised the mold took hold in the Zero first. But then it took off in the Coke I guess because it had much more sugar to work with. It would be interesting to do this experiment testing the Ph daily to see how it effected the growth. My theory is that the Zere went flat first and so its acidity dropped to what was tolerable.
mold doesn't do well with a high concentration of sugar. That's why sugary things hold so well.
The size of the initial mould colony is going to be high variance, as it came from the cup and/or the ice cubes. What section of the freezer the ice cubes were in, or how far to the back of the cupboard the cup came from will make a big difference in how large the initial mould growth is.
sweet stuff usually doesnt mold. chocolate from first ww can still be eaten if the packaging holds up. sure its not the same but it is clearly the difference here
@@WhiteBoyGamer chocolate "make" very little tiny maggots... I saw once.
Also possibly different species of mold or different amounts of multiple mold species, based on the preference to the specific chemical environment.
Id love to see one of these timelapse channels invest in a microscope so we can see how different samples look over time too, like a short video in the corner that goes through like 6 clips of samples taken at certain benchmarks like what a sample looks like at day 0, 12 hours, 1 day, 5 days, 25, 60, 100.

different lifeforms growing in it is interesting. regular coke looked to be growing mold while coke zero seemed to be hosting a SCOBY. makes sense since the mold could easily feed off sugar while the SCOBY is adapted for breaking down stuff like the sugar alcohols in artificial sweeteners.

Is the mold absorbing the water or is it mostly evaporating into the air?
Got genuine shivers. I can’t stand mold. Thanks sir. 🥲 Love your content.

I don't know much about mould, is it possible that the differences between. The 2 are partially or largely due to the luck of which mould spores fell into each glass or do their different compositions always attract the same types of mould? I guess you would have to have 2 or 3 glasses of each to demonstrate that it was a consistent repeatable effect.
Even such a synthetic product is subject to decomposition. Marvelous
Mold contamination could come from ice cubes or from the glass itself! Wonder what it would look like if you didn't use ice and strilized the glasses with boiling water 🤔 would they mold like this? Or in some different way probably?
And I'd be interested to see one pair of glasses covered and one pair uncovered.
Mold spores exist floating in the air as well, so it'd probably be very similar regardless.
If we want to see the best result, lab conditions must be prepared but it is a hassle if you’re not a researcher
*Mould
Aaaaand 1:55 is when you dare another guy to drink it for $20
Not enough money to pay for the hospital bills.
One thing I’ve always wondered about these is what would happen if you just let the mold sit indefinitely. Once all of the moisture dries up and all of the sugar is consumed, the mold would theoretically die, right? And then would it just be dust?
Basically yes, from dust to dust until the spores find a new habitat to flourish .)
yes, without moisture the mold cannot defend itself and will be oxidized into oblivion by the sun and the air.
but the mold changes color before that: spore release - those spores are often resistant to dessication, and can sit dormant for years, until they land in another glass of pop or other suitable substrate. some molds actively disperse them in the air.
the green stuff on the left is clearly mold spores which spread in the air.
some mold can just break off fibers that float around without specialized sexual spores.
some molds form dessication resistant masses called sclerotia too.
Depends on the species of mold I'd say. I've seen mold growing on window sills and the like. But I guess that can be an area where moisture would condense anyway.
I wonder where the mold comes from in the first place
these random interresting videos no ones ever searched for
Idk why I'm watching this at mid night but I don't regret doing that 👀
Makes sense that the zero mostly evaporated, as its mostly water, and the original reduced into a sludge, since its full of sugar. I was surprised by the amount of growth on the zero however. I wonder what's feeding the bacteria. Caffeine?
my nuts
One cool thing about Coke Zero is that it's not sticky at all. You could spill it and it's like cleaning up colored water.
I also wonder how mould grew on it as there is no sugar.. But then also you can get mould in bathrooms or black mould near windows so that then makes me wonder what the food source is to feed these??
It contains Caramel, Phosphoric Acid, Aspartame, Acesulfame-K, Natural Flavourings and Sodium Citrates … so there is some stuff for molds to eat.
@@frojojo5717 It does not contain caramel. It contains caramel food coloring. Caramel is just the name of the color.
Great video. I wonder if adding the ice cubes also introduced some bacteria to the mix. Perhaps a control without ice would have been a good idea.
I think more mold spores could end up in the glass from the air. I don't think those ice cubes made a lot of difference
@@PhotoOwl Very possibly, yes. I assume the two glasses were filmed in separate locations so there was no cross contamination.
@@PhotoOwl well mold is a fungus not a bacteria. Completely different biology.
@@spooderderg4077 Yes, I know. What I meant by that was, I don't think adding food grade clean ice cubes introduced any additional bacteria to the coke that wasn't anyways present in my studio where I film dozens of these at the same time.
@@PhotoOwl food grade clean ice cubes.. well, you used your fingers to put them in. was the cans clean? never have i seen anyone else wipe the top of the can before putting it in ther face.. i trust the glasses were sterile despite not being in an sterile environment. pretty sure i saw flies. and idk if such a level of detail was meant for the timelapse even. just saying. had a good watch. thank you. also, one with real sugar would be nice. though bet it's already out there so how interested am i anyway hehe.. if you are looking to improve production quality these little details are what makes the experience of both creating and watching so much richer. and that is what many "complaining" here is actually saying. this is a tough branch you are in where very high quality is almost always expected. Esp. from one like you who have the appearance of someone who would deliver premium quality. after all you do already deliver quality..
Very interesting. I was surprised that the Coke Zero started growing fur before the sugared drink, but since sugar is to some extent a preservative I suppose that makes sense. I was also interested to see that there was a much wider variety of molds on the original Coke. Also cool how the original Coke turned into syrup and stopped growing new mold while the Coke Zero desiccated completely.

Things that people love to say.
There is zero Coca Cola in that Coca Cola Zero.
The only thing lacking is a chemical/microbiologic check of what remains there. I'm surprized by how the Zero had microorganisms too despite the lack of sugar
Yeah. At first I though it might be the caramel that supports growth too, but it might just contain caramel coloring (which is different than real caramel). But some molds can me vicious little bastards and can break down a lot of chemicals for nutrition. It would only be molds growing in it, because the pH is too low to support bacteria.

I have a question, can/will you clean this vases and reuse them? Or are they gone forever? 🙃
I cleaned them, because that mold that you can see being stuck to the glass came off pretty easily. It didn't smell bad either, so I thought why not clean them. But yes, usually if a glass gets too disgustingly dirty then I just throw it away. Egg in glass video for example, or the strawberry milkshake one

@@PhotoOwl Another question: Would you drink something using this glass? Even after cleaning it very well, i think i wouldn't....
@@tornado100able Not OP, but that should be a non issue. If you have a moldy glass, yes, you should probably intensively clean it, at best with more than 60°C best would be cooking it (so 100+°C)
But glass is one of the few materials that are REALLY good at being cleanable, one of the reasons why we use it in the first place.
Example: Most of the glassware used in chemistry is made of very similar glass to your regular household glass. There is stuff that does not go well with this in chemistry, but most acids and the like can be handled in your regular old water glass :)

Actually its interesting that these two drinks have barely any differences besides the less sugar oc (or at least, how most of us would think, personally never found any difference between og and zero), and still obviously totally different types of mold grew in them.
zero has no sugar at all in it. Instead it has acesulfame potassium and aspartame, e950 and e951 respectively. That's why it tastes wrong
If it has no sugar then it's a chemical shitstorm.
