I think the “pro gamer move” went to Braxton Miller the following year when he did that nasty spin move on the VT defense. Even Kirk said “In Madden I think that’s the B button”
VT was coming off an 8-5 season in 2013 and 7-6 in 2012. Both of those were a far cry from the 8 straight 10-win seasons they had from 2004 to 2011. I thought when they won this game, they were back. They followed this up with losses to East Carolina and Georgia Tech and stumbled to a 7-6 record, 3-5 in the ACC. By far one of the most grueling seasons to endure as a Hokie fan. Beamer retired after the next season.
Doggy and that it was. I still get mad when other VT fans try to talk about that win as one of the best in school history. It meant nothing. It didn’t propel VT, and it didn’t hurt Ohio State. It was basically a scrimmage.
Hokie 4 Life it was cool that we handed the future national champs their only loss of the season. Even better because this was the first year of the playoff, and Ohio State had to EARN their spot. I know they were only ranked 8th at the name, but it’s tough not to consider this VT’s second win against a top 5 opponent.
It’s what we do beat someone we aren’t supposed to and then lose to someone we aren’t supposed to lose to Or Lose to someone we aren’t supposed to and then beat someone we aren’t supposed to
Just when VT makes you think they've figured it out, they stomp your heart out. This win, then lost to ECU. Start off 4-0, then lose by 2 TDs to ODU. When I've made it through an entire season without feeling embarrassed to be a Hokies fan will be the best day of my life.
One of the only losses as a buckeye fan that im okay with happening. This loss motivated the team and J.T. Barrett to play better which ultimately led to us winning out and winning the championship
Honestly, I think its more shocking that VT would lose its next 2 games, lose 3-0 against a WF team that was giving up 27pts a game (you probably know that game for the infamous screenshot of Beamer celebrating while ESPN played that 0-0 score at the end of regulation) and that this year was the true end of the Virginia Tech Golden Years. Then they hired Fuente and that was all she wrote.
I was at the game. Big OSU fan, but that day the Hokies absolutely were the better team. OSU needed to grow up being somewhat inexperienced. Remember that the week before we barely beat Navy in Baltimore. I was surprised that Vtech seemed to fall apart after this. I thought the OSU win would propel them. I had a feeling Ohio State would wake up and become quite good, possibly even still winning the Big Ten title. No way did I think we would win the National Title.
I turned 21 that day and we traveled up there for it. Paid a fortune to sit behind a concrete slab. I only remember Bucky ballin and that Riley interception. We had a whole celebration in the front rows of that end zone best game of my life.
No, it was just an indicator of the Old Genius that everyone talked about when it came to Bud, especially against Freshman, he had a knack for making them look like, well freshman
You know, its actually kind of absurd how bad this year ended up being for the Hokies. They ended up dropping 4 of the next 6 games, giving us a massive meme in the "Frank Beamer celebrating a 0-0 tie" screenshot from the Wake Forest game (that they lost 3-0 against a team giving up 27 pts a game), they missed on a ton of recruits like Josh Sweat, Derek Nnandi, Jalen Dalton, a bunch of other dudes I don't entirely remember off the top of my head. Virginia Tech and terrible offense, name a more iconic combination. Seems like if they don't have a generational talent in the backfield like Michael Vick or at least a future pro player like Tyrod Taylor or Logan Thomas, Tech's offense was unstable at best and prone to being complete garbage at worst.
This was the last great win Coach Beamer gave us Hokie fans. If you follow VT at all, you know: we never win games like this. Ever. I was all set for it to go just like our disastrous trip to LSU in 2007. I remember listening on the radio and as things unfolded and it became clear that not only were we in control, we were probably going to win...I couldn't even make a sound, I just sat there in openmouthed, joyous shock. Forever one of my best post-2011 college football memories. Absolutely insane that a few months later, this same VT team committed the infamous 0-0 Wake Forest game, and eventually lost it. But that's Hokie sports for you. Still my team, win or lose.
@@bullymaguire6722 yeah i know haha but it really humbled them and they had played incredible after this loss. Early on in the season loss drop in rankings no pressure on you got that underdog mentality can really change a team
Virginia Tech won this game using a bear front (3 DL over the center and 2 guards) that OSU had no game plan for. Couple that with 4 new starting OL and a red shirt freshman QB making his second career start and you have a disaster.
9 first rounders on this team. 6 second rounders. 49 players on this team went to the NFL including names like Zeke Elliott, Joey Bosa, Michael Thomas, Eli Apple, and Marshon Lattimore to name a few. How did this team lose?
The guys on the other side had some pretty good players too: Hodges, Fuller, Stroman, Ford, Edmunds, Clark, Facyson, Teller, Slye. And As mentioned below: Bud Foster
The Hokies had alot of good players too, and one of the best DCs ever. But, like most promising VT teams in the 2010s, they were plagued by awful offensive playcalling (this was probably the one game that Scott Loeffler actually called a good game for) and underperformance. The last decade of Hokie football has been...tough to watch to say the least.
I love this obviously as a Virginia Tech Hokie fan. However, I hope some college sports head coaches would watch this and really pay hard attention to this! In all sports, when you're coming off a huge win that wasn't predicted, and you were the underdog and won!! You see time after time after time after time!! That underdog team's, coming off of a huge win. Lose the next game against a good but inferior opponent or even a bad to nominal opponent again and again!! This drive's me crazy!! Coaches need to preach and prepare Every Week. It seems to be more mental than physical or lack there of? Of one or the other but probably both!! Great game played by both but the Hokies had it this night! Why not every night? There's something there in mentally!!! Lol
@ 8:15 there’s no way he got to the 41. Didn’t even get a first down either. Play it in .25 playback speed. Knee was clearly down🤷🏽♂️ Edit; watching it again, he might have got the first down. Looks very close to me. Still nowhere near the 41 tho. They gave him a full 2 more yards!
The weirdest thing wasn't even that VT won, but that some of their fans printed up "VT 35, Nat'l Champs 28" shirts after the season (a season in which they went 7-6 (3-5))
@Garrett Bailey yeah, by that point that QB had no idea what was going on anymore. You could see him get increasingly less comfortable as that game went on. Just a learning experience
Committee still put Ohio State in the playoff despite losing by double-digits to an unranked team. Should have been TCU or Baylor instead, but at the time they said you needed to play a conference title game to get in. Two years later, Ohio State did not play in their conference title game and were again put in anyway. Committee just made up the rules as they went along.
That's the story of VT for the last decade. As a Pitt fan who's team directly benefited from Tech's precipitous fall from grace, I'm sure you're aware of how much wasted talent there was on those Tech teams.
Great game as a VT fan. Funny how we were still bad that year, and OSU won the national title, so in retrospect, while exciting, this game ultimately meant nothing.
And then Ohio State went on to not lose a song game after that including postseason. Truly a weird year especially as an OSU fan with low expectations at the start with a loss against such a "weak" team
I remember watching this live. Honestly Tech wasnt even super good that year. Well our defense carried. Tech never was the same since Beamet left. And honestly probably gonna be another rough season this year
After rewatching this one, I never realized how well Virginia Tech’s defense did in this game. Picked off JT Barrett 3 times and had 7 sacks.
PSC Highlights Don’t forget they held him to only 9 complete passes as well.
This should have been immediately recognizable lol
GDO sorry!
PSC Highlights I was just messing around. You do a great job!
GDO you’re fine lol
Was there as a Hokie fan and it's one of the best days of my life
Anytime the buckeyes lose is a great day
Too bad they won that year lol
What happened to you guys the rest of the season that year? Crazy how the very next week they lost to East Carolina.
Social Assassin mediocre quarterback and line, plus defensive coordinator is way too aggressive for modern football
damn im sorry your a hokie fan

think they lost to ECU also that year. fuckin pissed
Stonehall Studios ECU was pretty straight that year lol. Wasn’t unbelievable that they lost but one they should’ve won.
Yeah that was a screwed up season.
That game proves that Bud Foster should be nominated for Saint Hood, because he didn't murder the offensive coaching staff and players
We kinda fell apart after that game
Watching this game live as a Buckeye fan, it felt like VA Tech went 37-37 on 3rd down
Good game, Hokies

2011 started 11-1 was up to #4 or 5 in the rankings then lose to clemson and michigan
Yep and then the Fuente era
This one hurt in the moment, but this season was so magical as an OSU fan I wouldn’t change anything
Agreed, O-H
bud foster flipped the script here. if it wasnt for this game, there would be no reevaluation of the offense, and no natty that year
So happy for frank here. The last couple years with him at coach were rough at times but glad he was able to get such a huge signature win like this
Hot take: No chance Ohio State wins the championship if they won this game
Damn that Ohio state team was stacked, mike Thomas, zeke, Joey bosa, vonn bell
And Curtis Samuel
It's one of the best victories as a hokie. Sadly, the rest of the year and many like it are plagued with ruined seasons.
Brewer was too tough for his own good. One if my favorite Hokies
Wish Brewer was still around
Totally agree, he was one tough kid. Also one of my favorites
This Ohio team were loaded that year. Amazing job by Virginia tech

They always do

Willie Byrne, Isaiah Ford, Sam Rogers, Brewer.....lotta great Hokie offensive players in this game.
