I agree with many of your commenters: your demo has several really key pointers the other dahlia topping videos I've seen miss altogether. Thank you so much!
Perfect timing and help. Watched person yesterday’s who said if stem hollow, cut away some more! Fried my bacon! Thanks too for tip on evacuating any water that begins to rot open hollow stem. Many, many thanks!
Great video and if you’re worried about rain after pinching at 18” a piece of tape over the hollow stem works well. Obviously that wouldn’t work to well if it’s only two workers and you have 2000 tubers but That rule also applies during winter if you dig your tubers and you cut them and left some in the ground tape or tin foil over the hollow stem so they don’t rot if you’re overly worried .Take it or leave it but I thought it was a good idea ! 😀
I hope you realize how amazing you and your family and people that work with you are. ❤️❤️❤️ love you guys and I can’t wait to cut some amazing dahlias with my two little girls that came from such awesome dahlia growers as swan island dahlias!
My MIL likes to put saran wrap over the part that was cut to prevent water from getting in the hollow stem. It works like a charm for her. I’ll have to try the same. Thanks for the great video and useful tips!
I am growing my dahlias for floral design. Would topping shorten the stem length. I do wand as many blooms as possible. Just need stem length as well. Thanks for the video
No, it will not shorten the length / hight. If you want more flowers on your plant you really need to do this. I always cut the main stem and am always amazed at how many more branches come out with flowers. Just gorgeous.
maybe a silly question, but could a little piece of buddy tape, or saran grafting tape on top of the stem hole help with rain problem? We get daily rains for half a year, don't want to kill the precious flowers... thank you.
I have a quick question which I haven’t been able to find the answer anywhere. I grew all of my dahlia from individual seed this year. Ever seed grew and has formed their own plant. Now I have found that 3 of my plants have 2 very different colours growing on their actual plant. One in particular is a bright red dahlia but on the same plant I also have bright single petal yellows. Does this regularly happen??? Many Thanks Theresa Australia
when starting Dahlias early by putting a tuber or clump in a gallon container- and you accidentally knocked off the first tiny sprouts, will they grow back? :) I just subscribed! Thank you for teaching me. I'm in 9B
Yes, i need to do the topping asap. I hope they already reached 45 cm. I actually waited till they reach 40cm,since I referred to a german hobby dahlia grower and he pinches the dahlias when the plants are 40cm high=around 16inches. If i pinch the dahlias in this height, what will then happen? Will it affect the growth of the dahlias?
My dahlia has side shoots coming out from each set of leaves already without the first topping, and all the side shoots seems to be growing , do I still top anyway? Thanks 🙏🏻
Is there something I can use to cover the little hole that is opened when you topped your Dahlias??? If I have them already in my garden growing Dahlias and start to rain I can help my Dahlias little trees. What to do in my case with that little hole??? Please someone help me by giving an advice.
my feeling is alot of the videos pinch the dahlias when the stock on top is quite large that can hold water.. i think you should pinch it when the tip of the stock is just comming out and its relativly small to have the smallest hole at top
Most dahlias will be blooming, on average, 90 days after planting. The earliest blooming dahlias will be most of the Low Growing Dwarf dahlias and early blooming varieties, which will bloom approximately 75 days after planting. While the larger blooms (8" bloom size and larger) will take approximately 120 days from planting to bloom. The great thing with dahlias though regardless of when they start to bloom is that they will bloom through frost. However, this bloom time greatly depends on the growing environment including weather, deep watering, fertilizing, and overall care given.🌸www.dahlias.com/help-center/how-to-grow-dahlias/summer/
These are some of the best videos on Dahlia care! Thanks so much!
Good video. Good energy. Quick to the point and clearly understandable. Visual was good aa well. Kudos to you and the videographer. 😊
You are a fabulous teacher. Your passion is our benefit! Thanks.
Thank you for such detailed information, I really appreciate it. I watched lots of videos and nobody provided such valuable details.
You’re just wonderful! You explain it very clearly! I am learning a lot from you! Thank you! Can’t wait to plant Dahlias this season!

Thank you for posting, you are so helpful! Love my Swan Island dahlias!!
I hope you realize how amazing you and your family and people that work with you are. ❤️❤️❤️ love you guys and I can’t wait to cut some amazing dahlias with my two little girls that came from such awesome dahlia growers as swan island dahlias!
Awesome!! We cannot wait to see pictures!🌸❤️
Great video - thanks! All seven of the dahlia tubers that we got from Swan Island this year are growing - so excited!
Fabulous!!🌸
fabulous video.thanks
my daliah has very thick stems that have a lot of space between the leaves I would like to know where to cut these plants. Your video is amazing !!!
Could you transplant the branch you cut off? thank you for all your teaching videos. I really enjoyed the one about Dahlia cuttings
I was wondering this as well. Thanks for asking! I hope they answer this. 😊
Yes you can, look on youtube, many videos on how to start dahlia cuttings
You are a great teacher ma'am
Excellent video. Well done!
thank you very informative and I needed it now
Great helpful advice. Thanks!
such great advices! thank you
Cut off pieces, they can’t be planted ? Thank you, very informative
Thank you for very informative videos. I have overhead watering. How long after snipping do I have to wait to water. Does the hollow eventually seal
Wait 24 hours to water and it will naturally seal itself!
My MIL likes to put saran wrap over the part that was cut to prevent water from getting in the hollow stem. It works like a charm for her. I’ll have to try the same. Thanks for the great video and useful tips!
Always such a great video thank you

Thank you for sharing. Good job ! : )
Can you use the tops for a cutting?
THANK YOUUUUUUU, but i topped the smaller side shoots too 😩😬😬😬😬
Your very informative, such a great video Thank you 💖
Good nice information
Wow nice ❤

After you pinch the top! Can you grow that top?
Very helpful. Thanks.
I've seen 10 vidéos about that and nobody says the same thing . Not easy for an amateur.😁 But i'll try your way to do. Thank you.👍👍👍

Does the hollow stalk eventually close or form a seal to prevent future water issues?
I was wondering this too - for how long is it vulnerable?
Thank you

Do you top Dinner Plate Dahlias?
Will you replant the toppings?
Yes, i need to do the topping asap. I hope they already reached 45 cm. I actually waited till they reach 40cm,since I referred to a german hobby dahlia grower and he pinches the dahlias when the plants are 40cm high=around 16inches. If i pinch the dahlias in this height, what will then happen? Will it affect the growth of the dahlias?
No, but we would recommend waiting until they are about 20in tall. But it will not hurt them by doing them at 16 inches.🌸
When is the best time to order the dahlias for zone 9b San Francisco Bay Area? Thank you
My dahlia has side shoots coming out from each set of leaves already without the first topping, and all the side shoots seems to be growing , do I still top anyway? Thanks 🙏🏻
I've got multiple stems growing from each of my dahlia tubers. Do I top each stem? Should I remove some of the stems completely?
she talks about this starting at 4:45
Is there something I can use to cover the little hole that is opened when you topped your Dahlias??? If I have them already in my garden growing Dahlias and start to rain I can help my Dahlias little trees.
What to do in my case with that little hole???
Please someone help me by giving an advice.
Can you squeeze the main branch you just cut off to prevent water from entering the hole?
Does the hole in the stem close up after topping?
I think mine were already topped, they are very short and thick with side branches.
Will topping make the resulting blooms smaller?
one of my dahlias is over 36 in tall do I need to go ahead and cut that one and what if they need water now do I water it at the root?
my feeling is alot of the videos pinch the dahlias when the stock on top is quite large that can hold water.. i think you should pinch it when the tip of the stock is just comming out and its relativly small to have the smallest hole at top
Seems like a sensible idea (I’m new to dahlias) - to those who know, is it a good idea?
TFS👏👏💜💜💜💜
Oh no....I missed the "you only do it once" part. What happens if you pinch them twice?
Omg that hurt my heart ♥️
Can you root the tops?
Yes, this would be considered taking cuttings!
Do you dip them in rooting solution and wait to root? Dip in rooting gel and plant? Or do you plant directly in the soil without rooting help?
When do they bloom? Mine are about 3 months?
Most dahlias will be blooming, on average, 90 days after planting. The earliest blooming dahlias will be most of the Low Growing Dwarf dahlias and early blooming varieties, which will bloom approximately 75 days after planting. Do you throw away the tops?
Yes, we discard the tops.🌸
Can you use it as cutting?
Brilliant, thank you🙂
At what height would I top 2nd year I win dahlias I grew from seed?
Unwin

That was not 18 to 20!inches but more like 12!!!
Ahh but perhaps it was … hmm
Thank you
