I come back to this specific recording of Animal Collective all of the time, it helps me cope with the many losses in my life, and the flood of emotions that their disappearance brings forth. I know that this Earth, and your skin, it comes back again. Good luck out there everyone.

Confounding their audience is what blows everyone's mind about them and keeps their music so fresh on every release. And yeah, I absolutely loved Sung Tongs. It's still my favorite AnCo record. But it's a complete, idiosyncratic, finished idea that lives in its own world. Why try to duplicate it, or capitalize on its success? It was perfect. Now on to the next thing. The reason they are my favorite band is because they sound like a different band on every album, yet still somehow stay perfectly true to themselves every time.

god, this is the sound of high school. getting drunk in the backyard when everyone's asleep and falling asleep swearing you'd never drink again, rocking around trying not to throw up. smoking weed only with your closest friends, talking about past times, thinking about what's to come but being too afraid to talk about it because you know it ultimately ends with slowly losing touch and never seeing each other again. this song is like standing on the precipice of your future and knowing what's to come and also like standing at the bottom of everything and wishing you could jump back up.

It reminds me of those times at the end of a mushroom trip, the mellow afterglow, when everyone's kinda just sitting around with each other, gently smiling and talking, giggling a little, starting to think about getting something to eat now that the appetite has returned. Just those calm, connected, comfy, human moments.
