  • So being 5ft 3" (162cm) and 9.9 (63kg) in my all motorcycle gear, my 2019 KTM 790 Adventure S stock suspension is sprung way too stiff for me and as we know, it's non-adjustable other than pre-load on the rear shock.
    when looking at options I knew that I didn't want to lower or raise the bike at all. My legs can't take a rise in height and I didn't want to lose ground clearance by lowing the bike. I did my research on suspension options and settled with the TracTive Extreme front and rear. Other than having it sprung to my weight, it's also fully adjustable with pre-load, compression & rebound in the front. (Pre-load is done with spacers within the fork) And in the rear, you have pre-load, damping, & high-speed, low-speed compression. The fact that it looks cool AF with its orange anodizing made it an easy choice, although the price did hurt a little however it's 100% worth it!
    What I believe I have now is an Adventure R at the height of the S.
    In this video, I unbox the suspension, install and give it a test ride on the TET in the Yorkshire Dales.

    I just removed shock on my 21 890 adv S. You dont need to remove wheel or even rear fender. Just screw in preload all the way and remove chain guard (top part). There is enough space to do it. Same for install. I did loosen two frame bolts near the top shock bolt

    Superb vid, my 790S needs a leg re anodising so I'll get both pairs done silver maybe even gold like my Thruxton R, definately will use TracTive Suspension, I'm a bit of a lardy at 5'9"'s 98kg's and the rear feels ok, I'm not after MX greatness so I'll do the front end first!

      It’s so nice having the adjustment. I’ve been playing with mine while talking to Torque Racing and the bike is even better than I was straight after the swap. I’m loving it suspension and wheels are the best mods i’ve made. Most expensive but the best

    Just on the flickering on camera from the garage footage, you can change your camera settings to be either p a l or n s t c and it should align with the frequency of the lights and stop the flickering in the footage.

    Great vid! I'm about to do something similar. I'm debating between getting the tractive forks or k-tech internals. Definitely getting the rear shock tho!
    Do you have any protection for the tanks when going offroad or do you feel it's not needed? I've not thought of getting crash bars however venturing offroad more has made me consider it.

    • @Adv_Charlie
      @Adv_Charlie  2 роки тому +2

      Trust me the bike crashes very will the must haves are a bash plate, folding or removable mirrors and alloy hand guards. The tank can take a beating and the covers are cheap if you fall enough times

    "What I believe I have now is an Adventure R at the height of the S" Tractive shock is probably better than the WP XPLOR shock which is horribly harsh even when the sag is correct.

    Just come across the video, very nice - also looking at upgrading my suspension but considering just replacing the spring in forks and on shock as per touratech which cost around $400 … would love to know the difference?!

    • @Adv_Charlie
      @Adv_Charlie  2 роки тому

      I can’t compare any other products or set ups other than between stock and the Tractive extreme suspension as that’s all I ridden on this bike.
      I guess the question you need to ask yourself is, do you want the adjustability or just a more suited spring weight?

  • @54zk

    Ive had that suspension for 6months or so, love it! I'm 5'4" with a 26" inseam, almost went 1inch shorter but didnt. Is the Seat concepts seat worth it? does it really get you closer to the floor?

    I just bought a used 2020 790 adv,s also and it came with the same shock, X-TREME-PA. My forks have the Andreani cartridges installed. Are they the same in quality or is one better than the other comparing yours to mine? Mine also came with a Camel brand CAT heat shield.

    • @Adv_Charlie
      @Adv_Charlie  Рік тому

      I’m not sure about a comparison between Andreani and TracTive from my research TracTive appears to be more off road focused. Camel products are really good, I have their 1 finger clutch which I makes a world of difference

    Question regarding lower shock bolt. In particular the right side 14 mm. Hex Left Handed ( LH ) Adjuster nut. When you start removing the big Torx lower bolt ( from Left side ), do you place your 14 mm. Hex bit and just hold it in place? I noticed you loosen that right side 14 mm. Adjuster nut after loosening ( removing I think ) bolt.

    • @Adv_Charlie
      @Adv_Charlie  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi, So the manual says to loosen the top bolt first then loosen the bottom bolt without removing them, then loosen the LH adjuster nut.
      Thinking about it I don't think you'll need to hold it still, if I'm right they will both loosen off at the same time because the LH thread will allow both parts to rotate the same way. I think?
      But I'd be very careful with the adjuster nut. If it seems stuck but you can remove the bolt see if you can get the shock out like that. It's very soft and if you lean on it too hard to get it unstuck you can break it and the swing arm around the adjuster nut. This is due to your hex bit being harder and it spins within the adjuster nut. The corners of the hex bit then push out on the ally of the nut and swing arm.
      It's an easy job you just have to be careful and not put too much force on the adjuster nut.

    Very nice and informative video! Has it ever happened that at 12:45 when removing the bottom bolt that holds the cartridge,the whole cartridge spins with the bolt? I am in this current situation and i think that an impact gun is the only solution.

    Thanks. I have an 890AR, and am very disappointed with the suspension - it's hard and harsh. My sag figures confirm that the suspension is too hard, specially up front. TracTiv seems to be the way to go. Have you measured your sag since installing the TracTiv units?

    • @Adv_Charlie
      @Adv_Charlie  Рік тому

      I did measure it once i have it installed and it it was correct for me. However now a year and a but on i need to check it again as the suspension would have all bed in now. Honestly one of the best upgrades. However my cousin who is “normal” size has no issues with his stock R suspension. But i would say Tractive Extreme would be an upgrade from the stock R stuff.

    • @RedRupert64
      @RedRupert64 Рік тому +1

      @@Adv_Charlie Thanks. I didn't mention that I use the 890AR mainly for road riding, therefore I don't need to allow for the hard hits that one experiences off-road. I'm aiming for a softer, but but well controlled ride. It's a good point that the suspension tends to bed in after a while.

    • @Adv_Charlie
      @Adv_Charlie  Рік тому

      @@RedRupert64 I did wonder if you didn’t do much off road based on your comment. A cheaper and second option might be just to get your stock suspension re-sprung so it is softer.

    • @RedRupert64
      @RedRupert64 Рік тому +1

      @@Adv_Charlie I have been considering that, but it looks as if the springs will have to come from the US. By the time postage, VAT and duty have been paid, one might as well go for the TracTiv items. It seems that TracTiv may be a better solution for a soft but well controlled ride. I weigh 90kg (max. with all kit).

    After you draw the fluid out of the forks to the level that shows to be 90mm from the top it seems to need no more than 3 fluid ounces per fork with this upgrade, maybe because of the thicker cartridges taking up the space compared to the stock ones?

    • @Adv_Charlie
      @Adv_Charlie  Рік тому +1

      Yes because they are a closed cartridge and not just a spring more space is used

    • @Adv_Charlie
      @Adv_Charlie  Місяць тому

      No, the stock adventure suspension is only has adjustable preload on the rear and there is no adjustment at all on the front. So aside from the spring rate change I now have very good, full adjustment on the front and rear.
