To better hide the ends at the end of a piece, when you do the second part of the knot, direct the cord end to the back of the work.

I use either c-lon or superlon cord. www.bellomodo.com carries a pretty good selection and they have loads of beads, too
how do you finish the piece?
I just use some hypo cement on the row of knots around the split ring and trim away the excess cord.
