USB sounds pretty good. I'm trying to decide between this and the Fender Champion 50XL which I think I might like the sound of a little bit more but the Katana just seems a lot more convenient and sounds great as well.
My only real complaint about the Katana 50 is that it doesn’t have a tuner. I don’t know about the other models? I’ve not used the Champion, but I have used the Mustang. It’s good, has a tuner, but personally I don’t like the heavy tones and amps in them. For my style of playing the amp just doesn’t seem to gel. So for that reason, I prefer the Katana.
Wow going in usb makes a big difference! What a tone! I’m curious about changing out the different impulse responses. Other than that, I am pretty impressed!

Okay, so I just bought a second Katana 100 MkII head. The first one goes to a Katana 212 cabinet. The second one goes to the 12 " Celestion in my JCM800 until I get another 212 Katana cabinet. I have then both in stereo expand, line our of the master goes to power amp in of the slave using a standard mono audio cable. I have both amps programmed identical; preamp/eq and send/return before the effects. So, all effects are in the loop on both. My pedal board is plugged into the effects loop return of the master and then goes through all the onboard effects and to the line out and power amp. I get audio through both amps, but it's not stereo. I get no stereo effect with any chorus or phaser or any delay or reverb. I get the same exact audio out of both amps at the same time, no slap back or ping pong effect at all. What am I missing here? Both are Mk2 heads programmed identical. What am I missing? Why am I not in stereo?

Hi Eric. I try not to do much (if any) post production for my demos. In this case I had the amp on the 0.5w output, so it’s not blasting. There is a built in Noise Suppressor which is accessible via the software. I think it’s on by default..? But I could be wrong. Once you introduce more gain or effects the signal is going to get noisier, so you would need to adjust it accordingly. But honestly all I did from memory was use the brown amp and dial it in on the panel. If you run into any issues with connecting to the software, I have a tutorial that should help. ua-cam.com/video/O6Pm8xLt9Vs/v-deo.html
Thanks brother I greatly appreciate it! I’m on 0.5 as well as I live in a duplex and my neighbor likes to complain if he hears my toast pop outta the toaster 🤷🏼♂️ I haven’t gone into the tone studio yet but I was just curious if you did any post work at all on these vids. Nice to see that these COULD be the results I can get outta this thing with the right setup!!
Haha I know exactly how you feel! I did have a bit of noise when I first tried it too. But I soon learned that was my own overexcitement with the gain. Haha With a little tweaking it’s been great ever since. I now also jam with a bunch of pedals in front of it, and I use a BOSS NS2 in the chain where I need it to control the extra hiss. Hope this all helps man! Happy jamming. 🤘🏼
@@DaveWebbMusic the noise suppressor for the amp is off by default. You do have to go into the tone studio and activate it and adjust it to your liking. It works well.
Hey man, would I be able to use a plugin in my DAW and play through the katana speaker in real time using just the USB printer cable or is that not possible? Do I need to run it through an audio interface? Thanks
The effect and sound quality is awwwesome!! Is this by default or did you do any tweaks to get such a stereo sound quality... How are you connecting it to pc? Direct USB or are you using any interface upon mkii??
Isn’t it great! I used the same settings across each example, but of course added the built in delay & reverb for the stereo example. All sounds are stock on the Katana. I don’t do any post production for these types of examples because I want the real, raw sound to come across. The USB connection is straight from Katana to the Mac.
Sorry but I don’t have or use ProTools. I am assuming it would be a similar process though. Select the Katana as the interface & setup a track like you would normally.
Can you make a tutorial on how to record Boss Katana on Adobe Audition with USB? I can get the sound coming out of the amp, but when i activate the effect channel; the track gets the effect too. Appreciate it if you can help.
Hi Tony, I would love to help you out. Unfortunately I don’t have Adobe Audition so I’m unable to try it out. Are you able to connect to Adobe via USB and get sound coming through to your track?
One thing I really struggle with while recording on Ableton using USB is with the volume. A lot of times, I choose a pre set and hit record and the volume sounds very low and the wave forms of the recording are tiny too. While, in case of other few effects the volume and wave forms are alright. Do you know why that is the case? Is there a workaround to use the low volume effects by fixing the recording quality?
I think some presets have the volume knob on the amp set to a low value while others don't, this may be a problem. Since, some tones when you adjust the volume knob to increase it will result in changing the tone you already dialed in. There is a thread on reddit talking about this problem of low usb output.
@@yousefelbrolosy9753 The crazy part is sometimes it's the not the volume knob even. In general I have to often put warmth boosting or other volume/texture boosting effects like Camel Crusher in my recorded guitar part but it comes with a loss of that authentic guitar texture, rather unfortunate.
@@adityarohanik0 the best solution I came across is to add eq (and adjust the level) don't forget to then lower the master pot so that you don't bleed your ear out
Thanks for this comparison this is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Can you tell me if the USB out recording on the 50 mkii is exactly the same quality of interface and sound as the 100 mkii? Also do you know if the direct out recording option on the 50 mkii is a balanced line out and if the dedicated direct out on the 100 mkii is balanced? Finally did you notice any line noise when using the 50 mkii and recording with the direct line out/headphone jack?
Hey man. I’m so glad this helped. I can’t tell you exactly whether or not the 100 & 50 are the same, or if they are different. I only have the 50. However as far as I know, the USB sound quality is the same across the board. I’m pretty sure the direct out is balanced line level. Again, I don’t know about the 100 but my guess is that it’s the same. And no, there is no unwanted noise. They’re a great amp and loads of options, all which sound great.
Would be good to clarify that the experience in the video is specific to Apple IOS installation, not Windows 10. The Katana driver on Windows does not support output to anywhere but the Katana, requiring headphones connected to the Katana to monitor the DAW. This diminishes the capabilities of the DAW and the associated monitoring equipment. Monitoring through he Katana phone output is mono so you lose ability to monitor the stereo effect, the monitors connected to the computer don't get a signal. You can try a generic ASIO driver, but my experience resulted in a number of sound quality and volume issues. I don't have this issue with other amps that offer USB recording. Options to address the Katana driver flaw require investment: switch from Windows to IOS, switch from Katana to a different amp, invest in a Audio Interface and connecting cables. It would be nice if the videos marketing the Katana USB recording capabilities were clear up front on the limitation for Windows drivers, there are a lot of threads with frustrated users wondering why they fail to have the experience represented in the video.
I'm having huge input latency when using reaper. I tried using ASIO4ALL as audio system but i couldn't use my headphones as output if I used the headphones in anything else
So I'm recording an album I have a boss katana and I love it but from an audio engineering perspective would Mic'ing the amp sound better in terms of the general mix? I know that we all seek the perfect tone but when everything is harmonizing together sometimes you don't want the fullest fattest tone possible because it'll just sound better for the song. What are your thoughts on that???
I honestly think that both can work great. As long as you’ve got a good engineer who knows how to make everything gel. I have done both digital and amps have had great results from both. Recording a digital signal/amp is super clean, but can sound artificial if you get it wrong, whereas mic-ing an amp you have the room to contend with, plus amp noise etc. all of which can be controlled of course. I would try both. I think end of the day if you find a tone that sounds good to you, then you go with it! And try tracking that tone with a mic, & digitally, then compare. Every song is going to need a little tweaking to make it work, so just play. In my opinion, more is better. You can always leave something out, so hook in and have fun! As I said, if you’ve got someone mixing who knows what their doing, you’ll be set.
I'm just using Audacity. But using USB you can't even see a waveform when playing.....db are way down in the -45 range. I have to amplify up by 50 db in order to see a waveform and actually hear the recording through the computer.
Only thing I can think of would be your buffer size. If you set it 64 samples you should be fine. Anything higher than that you will start to feel latency.
You should be able to. Press configure to take you to audio preferences, then select the desired input/output from there. If it’s not working for you, then I have no idea. It should work.
For anyone running into this issue, I think that with a Windows PC you can't select separate devices / interfaces for input and output. Simple way to get around this is using the Katana as an audio interface (both I's & O's) and put headphones in the back of the amp to monitor your recording - once you've recorded you can switch back yo your normal interface / monitoring. You may be able to use ASIO4ALL to control both the Katana and your chosen interface, it may or may not work? If you're Mac than I have no idea
Hi, i have a question. when i try to record via usb with mi katana, i'm never satisfied of any distorted sound. do you connect the cable to a sound card like a scarlett?
It is connected straight to the computer and routed into your DAW. Getting a good sound does take some tweaking, but don’t over think it. Simple is usually the best approach. Don’t forget to use your EQ’s. Makes all the difference. If you’re wanting to record, personally my approach is to EQ in the DAW and start with as raw a sound as possible.
@@DaveWebbMusic my set up is weird lol I have a set of headphones plugged into my amp, another set into my phone with a mic on it. Then I use presets on the app itself for tone, gain, ect.
To have sound come through the computer you need to select your Katana as the audio interface, either in computer audio settings, or in your DAW, depending on what you’re trying to achieve. Your amp should also still be making sound. Just turn it to the appropriate setting like you would normally.
When using the USB the master volume doesn’t affect the audio going to your computer, only the master volume of the speaker on the amp. The amp controls will effect the USB audio of course. If your input on your computer is quiet, you may need to check your input settings.
@@isakas8944 it’s hard to tell without knowing your setup, but this is what I would do if it was happening to me. Make sure the ‘Amp’ volume is definitely turned up. Not the Master as it doesn’t affect it. Connect to Tone Studio and check the USB output settings. It may be turned down. Check to see if any of the effects are causing the amp to be quiet. Adjust the gain level inside the DAW if the level is low. Try these options and see how you go. If this doesn’t solve it, I’m really not sure.
Yeah sorry dude, I gave up on Windows years ago so I can’t help. My only advice would be to literally read every step thoroughly before you execute any. In the end, that’s all I do. Take your time with each step because nothing will time out, it will just wait until you press ‘go’.
@@DaveWebbMusic on our Katana Mk II 100 it is stereo The thing is, to replace the audio interface is a bad thing if you wanna record multiple tracks at once. OK, we are a pro recording studio. Maybe in home recording it's not a thing to switch the interface
Is it? On the 50, it is definitely not. Do you have a single or dual speaker version? I agree. Changing the interface is not doable in a multi track recording situation. Only way round it would be to overdub.
Yep, it’s mono in headphones. Which came as a surprise for me too! That’s the point of this video. To show that you need to use USB to unlock the stereo effects on this model. I haven’t used the other models, but if yours is stereo then that just shows another difference between the 50 & 100.

Thanks brother I greatly appreciate it! I’m on 0.5 as well as I live in a duplex and my neighbor likes to complain if he hears my toast pop outta the toaster 🤷🏼♂️
I haven’t gone into the tone studio yet but I was just curious if you did any post work at all on these vids. Nice to see that these COULD be the results I can get outta this thing with the right setup!!
Haha I know exactly how you feel!
I did have a bit of noise when I first tried it too. But I soon learned that was my own overexcitement with the gain. Haha
With a little tweaking it’s been great ever since.
Thanks
Hey!
Pretty sure that’s not possible. As far as I know, the USB is output only and doesn’t allow for extras to be inserted in the chain.
How do you record with your boss katana amp and your boss me80 pedal
The effect and sound quality is awwwesome!! Is this by default or did you do any tweaks to get such a stereo sound quality...
How are you connecting it to pc? Direct USB or are you using any interface upon mkii??
Isn’t it great!
I used the same settings across each example, but of course added the built in delay & reverb for the stereo example.
All sounds are stock on the Katana. I don’t do any post production for these types of examples because I want the real, raw sound to come across.
The USB connection is straight from Katana to the Mac.
Great video. Could you please explain how to setup USB recording in pro tools? Can't find any information on the web about it:(
Sorry but I don’t have or use ProTools.
I am assuming it would be a similar process though. Select the Katana as the interface & setup a track like you would normally.
Can you make a tutorial with the usb and reaper I can’t get it to record
Man I would, but I don’t have reaper.
Do you know if this works with both Protools and Audition? I've had problems getting some interfaces to work.
I’ve not tried it, but it should. As far as I’m aware it is designed to work with all DAW’s.
There is no direct line out in katana 50 gen3
Can you make a tutorial on how to record Boss Katana on Adobe Audition with USB?
I can get the sound coming out of the amp, but when i activate the effect channel; the track gets the effect too.
Appreciate it if you can help.
Hi Tony,
I would love to help you out.
@@adityarohanik0 the best solution I came across is to add eq (and adjust the level)
don't forget to then lower the master pot so that you don't bleed your ear out
Every fx has its own output volume values.. go to settings somewhere to increase the volume output on this case
@@mayaiconpack it only increases upto 6db in Ableton. That's often not sufficient and gets lost in the mix
There should be and option to let it play sound while plugged into record out like almost every other amp for $500 aud
I don’t use Windows, so I wouldn’t know.
But thanks for posting for others to read.
I'm having huge input latency when using reaper. I tried using ASIO4ALL as audio system but i couldn't use my headphones as output if I used the headphones in anything else
That’s sounds frustrating. Sorry dude, I’m really not sure.
Try adjusting buffer size..?
at 04:15 for windows users how it work with driver type?
Wow that’s so odd. I haven’t experienced anything like that at all. I’ve never used Audacity, so maybe it’s something to do with that..?
I always have that problem. I have had 3 katanas, USB output is always incredibly quiet. I found this video looking for solutions
Background music ended it for me sorry
How do you deal with the latency when playing over a backing track?
How are using the backing tracks?
@@DaveWebbMusic i play over ableton live and whenever i record and play over a BT, i find sync issues with it. Any tips? TNX!
Only thing I can think of would be your buffer size. If you set it 64 samples you should be fine. Anything higher than that you will start to feel latency.
@@DaveWebbMusic i will try it. Thanks Dave! Best of luck
Don't know why I can't use Boss Katana as a Input and Focusrite as an output device in Ableton when I connect it through the USB.
You should be able to.
Press configure to take you to audio preferences, then select the desired input/output from there.
If it’s not working for you, then I have no idea. It should work.
I'm having the same problem with reaper. Did you find a solution?
@@DaveWebbMusic thanks!
I record on an app on my phone. Is there a way to set that up?
What do you use to record into your phone?
I feel like there would be a way 🤔 I’d have to look into it.
@@DaveWebbMusic my set up is weird lol I have a set of headphones plugged into my amp, another set into my phone with a mic on it. Then I use presets on the app itself for tone, gain, ect.
I tried to connect it to garageband but it wasn't detecting through USB. any ideas why?
Did you download the katana driver to your computer? If not then that is why
I keep getting beep and drop out . Why is it doing this
Tone studio recognizes the guitar and i installed all the drivers but im not getting sound. anyone know why? i’m connected through usb
To have sound come through the computer you need to select your Katana as the audio interface, either in computer audio settings, or in your DAW, depending on what you’re trying to achieve.
Your amp should also still be making sound. Just turn it to the appropriate setting like you would normally.
Hey man, why when I record through USB the volume of the guitar is really low, and i have the volume knob on max
When using the USB the master volume doesn’t affect the audio going to your computer, only the master volume of the speaker on the amp.
The amp controls will effect the USB audio of course.
If your input on your computer is quiet, you may need to check your input settings.
@@DaveWebbMusic can you explain how please?
@@isakas8944 it’s hard to tell without knowing your setup, but this is what I would do if it was happening to me.
Make sure the ‘Amp’ volume is definitely turned up. Not the Master as it doesn’t affect it.
Connect to Tone Studio and check the USB output settings. It may be turned down.
Check to see if any of the effects are causing the amp to be quiet.
Adjust the gain level inside the DAW if the level is low.
Try these options and see how you go. If this doesn’t solve it, I’m really not sure.
@@DaveWebbMusic ok thanks
There is a setting somewhere in Boss tone studio preferences, to do with USB output level - you can put it to 200% I think (from memory)?
Why the annoying background muzak ?
I really wish someone would make a windows video for this. Literally every video I see is Mac.
Yeah sorry dude, I gave up on Windows years ago so I can’t help.
My only advice would be to literally read every step thoroughly before you execute any. In the end, that’s all I do. Take your time with each step because nothing will time out, it will just wait until you press ‘go’.
I made it only 40 seconds in to the video and had to back out die to the background music being so loud and....present at all actually.
Record out is stereo too...
You’d think so but it’s actually not. Even if, like me, you use a stereo cable the effects are not output in stereo on the Record Out.
@@DaveWebbMusic on our Katana Mk II 100 it is stereo
The thing is, to replace the audio interface is a bad thing if you wanna record multiple tracks at once.
@@DaveWebbMusic single speaker.
If you use headphones, is it stereo then? I can't imagine that this output is mono on some models
Yep, it’s mono in headphones. Which came as a surprise for me too!
That’s the point of this video. To show that you need to use USB to unlock the stereo effects on this model.
I haven’t used the other models, but if yours is stereo then that just shows another difference between the 50 & 100.
No entendí nada loco dale suave alv compa
Music is unbearable, I cant hear what you are saying...why?
With the usb option,is there sound coming out of the amp or is it like the jack phone out option that mutes the amp?
You have the option for either. Meaning you can choose to have sound coming from the amp or not.
You never covered how to set it up in Cubase. Instead we had to listen to your boring playing.😡
Ah, yeah, I did.
