This guy's right hand fingers are like hammers of a piano. They just bolt straight out, strike and retract. It's such a tight, pummeling sound. If that isn't Metal, I don't know what is.

If ...And Justice for All would have sounded this good, just imagine how much better the Black album would have been. Losing Cliff really hurt them creatively, Lars just wouldn't allow it, I don't really know if he was being selfish or he just didn't want anyone to be able to compete with Cliff.

I love Jason but James was right, he did just double the guitars. I kinda understand why they turned it down in the mix. It'd sound a little too muddy
This song needs to be played on a 5 string. If you listen to Jason’s line as closely as possible and do some mixing around you can actually hear him playing on a tuning way under E at 4:16. Go to the Work in Progress mix and you can hear it better
I've just noticed some of Jason's fills in the chorus of Eye of the Beholder Rough Mix (in which the bass is louder, and the second and third choruses don't contain any vocals). He plays some notes seven frets up from the root notes, during the lines where James sings (or would normally sing) "Freedom of choice/speech/etc". Check out from 3m39s of this link:

But I think he's gone off the available tabs rather than closely scrutinising the isolated bass stems (which, to be fair, have only recently come to light due to advances in bass separation software).
