Yes went to school from 1981 to 1983 while in high school took appliance repair, been working in the industry for over 40 years, I have been teaching in Miami Florida appliance repair for 36 years and Work with my Partner Brother B at TMM Academics where we have our own school. I also am the owner of an Appliance company covering more than half of south Florida with over 20 technicians. So you could say I have been doing appliances all my life.
The first Whirlpool had a transmission about 1and 1/2 feet long by 10" wide, then the direct drive came in with a transmission about 1/3rd the size, these newer washers it looks like a transmission but it is just a support for the shaft and bearing assembly because the plastic tub could not support it by itself.

How big were the transmissions on each model lineup?
