Richard, it would be great if you would do a full build on a gen 2 LT1! Show all the LS guys what they're capable of
That's Grubb Worm's purpose in life 🔥
Steve Morris has a video of a GM block gen 2 lt1 engine making right at 2000hp on his engine dyno.
@@rogergm92 and he’s not even the only one. The lt1 has run times near him before just in a auto
@@rogergm92 who's this
Eww
Excellent video. The Gen2 LT1's are the red headed stepchild of the SBC's. I have a completely stock other than 355 gears and a built 700r4, 1993 C4 corvette 40th edition. Surprise a lot of people with that old car. Love it. Love the video. Brings back good memories of the old "camel humps"....LOL
Supposedly the TBI 350s were considerd LT1s which are Gen 2 SBCs. In that case id remove the TBI and put a TPI/LT1 intake on it with a Low Energy Ignition (LS1 coils)
@@shadowopsairman1583 Those were Swirl port captains bar heads got great gas milage But LT1 has tumble and fast burn race heads
Just when we thought that Richard found all the “I wonder if” tests we are too poor to do, he finds another we forgot about. Keep up the great work!
Looking forward to the LT5 vs LS6 shootout!
Lt5 vs ls6 vs 96 lt4 next test for the king of 5.7
yes
Great video as always. Can't wait to see the LT5. As a previous c4 ZR1 owner I'll always have a soft spot for that engine.
Yeah it is probably never gonna happen
Richard, thank you for sharing another excellent in-depth comparison. Your June 2010 MotorTrend article comparing the '70 LT-1 to the 1996 LT1 was instrumental in helping us decide on our swap (click on avatar to view) way back when, and we've been fans ever since. Keep up the great work, and we'll keep following your channel!
thnx
Im soo down to see what the LT-5 makes! I swear its under rated by the factory.
I'm excited can't wait for the Z06 performance test 🙌
Back in the day, I ran a 1970 LT1 in a Z-28 Camaro... It was a great car and engine. I updated the cam to a Racer Brown STX 21 solid lifter(I believe), and the 350 then made right at 400 horsepower and revved out to 7000. Roller rockers were definitely needed then as the Racer Brown cams increased action, burnt up factory rockers. That cam really brought that engine alive. The factory cam was plain lazy...
well, the OEM cam was meant for operating AC and vacuum options and a wide range of driving styles. Mellow in a 350, less so in a 301 with a 780 cfm Holley.
WHAT IS FISHER-PRICE HELL KIND OF NAME IS RACER BROWN? Ever heard of Lunati? Now theres a cam company.
@@MasterWitchDoctor Racer Brown was a big name back in the day, like Isky or Clay Smith (y' know the woody woodpecker guy). there was Reed, Howards, Potvin, Webber, General Kinetics, Sig Erson, Shelby, Schnieder, and you could buy custom van parts from a Sears or JC Penny catalog. People think the internet has brought on a slew of custom car parts at our fingertips, but they always existed. and then there was the cheap-o crap, JC Whitney, Almquist, Honest Charley, etc.
Then Holley/Mr Gasket began buying up brands under one umbrella...
Love this test!!! Awesome!
Thank you Richard I need to hear this much appreciated
Thank you Sir, priceless lessons 🙏
Really love these videos of the old chev small blocks
I’m routing for the LS6
The gen 2 LT1 and LS1 are under rated ...
lose the aifoil
I'm always on team gen 2 LT1 lol.
lose the airfoil
👌👍 Thank you for sharing so much information.
My son and I are building a F.E.D. and using your thoughts on the engine build. Will send pictures when done 😊
You are the guy who convinced me to get a station wagon with the gen 2 lt1. I love the engine a lot!
noice
1996 LT4? I think it is worth finding one and testing it since it is the true and all-time king of the hill in the Gen 1-2 LT world.
I did forget about the LT4
They say the bottom end is worth a few hp with tricks, Cam a few more then sodium raised runner heads and taller intake a few, then the 1.6 Roller rocker's... I'd say it makes 400 hp on his dyno
Can't wait to see LS6 vs. LT5!
Richard, great video, can’t wait to see the LT5 vs LS6! Would be cool to see a Gen 1 build to be comparable to the LS engines and see how they compare (i.e., better heads, coil on plug, EFI, etc)… any chance?
I don't see a reason to modify the SBC to keep up with a stock Ls1-not sure what that proves
I'd like to see a Dunn head 95 LT5 dyno verus 02 up LS6 as well
Time and technology has really brought big horsepower back from the weak late 70s and 80s. Makes me think about adding new age tech to old school engines. Cam and heads are so much more efficient and cheaper than 20 to 30 years ago. Just comparing the fuelie double hump heads to modern vortex heads is daylight and dark differences.
I used to be a sbc fan until I got my first bbc😜 torque monster 👻
You gonna start a war lol
cant wait to see that lt5 on the dyno. really cool engine.
I can’t wait to see LS6 vs LT5, both 405 hp and close to 400 ft-lbs, but it’ll be interesting to see how they compare in power bands.
My favorite is the l46
I love all of them.
Once we stage 2 port the efi LT1s heads and intake manifold power gains are 60-70hp more with no other parts changes, for those wondering. Add a better cam and the power increases go through the roof.
We had a lt1 with lt4 hot can kit thang was a beast
You can't go wrong with any version of the Chevy small block. It's my favorite engine. They're all amazing.
Naw you can definitely "go wrong" with an LT1
Maybe you should do more research before showcasing your ignorance?
Love the gen 2 LT1!!! I just wish they weren't so expensive to modify. I've got a 96 Buick Roadmaster sedan and it's pretty good. I just wish I could afford to make it better
Gotta love a 90s lt1
I tol' that teacher, only math i need is 5.7 = 3'fiddy ;)
I want to see an LT4-LS1-LS6-LT5 shootout.
Really look forward to LT5 vs LS6. As for LT4 it probably makes similar power to LS1
Richard, please revisit the gen 2 LT1 cam upgrade with proper valve springs.
I'd truly be delighted to see more LT1 vids. All things LT1 perhaps??ps ? I've seen "the other guys" vid multiple times already and it was great. So I'm confused. In that vid you claimed the LT1 was even more powerful than a 5.3..
93 Firebird Formula here ....love the Lt1 over my old 99 trans am ls .. ls issues lol .lt1 is great
I would love to see a build series on the L31 chevy truck motor.
I'd like to see a 1996 LT4 dyno
As someone who's getting ready to start building a gen 2 LT1, I would love to see some more content around how they handle boost and how far you can get them N/A with all the workings and some valve springs! Great content, Richard!
Same. I have a nice lt1 c4 an a Holley Terminator X for it. Just have to get the Torqhead and wait for it to blow up so I have an excuse to yank it and build.
They only handle boost while the Opti-Spark is functioning.....Hope you are going to different system!
As of right now I'm planning on using torqhead but I know there are a couple other systems that I might look into but the opti will be no more after the build is complete.
Do a search for Grubworm Camaro!
@@bartpang that's what started me on even wanting to rebuild the engine. He's going to be switching to a gen1 350 later this year. He doesn't use the reverse cooling from the gen 2, which makes sense. I will not be going turbo though. It'd still be fun to see a big bang of the gen 2 LT1!
Plz Richard more old school 5.7 lt1 videos!!

Next test...factory tri-power set ups vs single carb. Pontiac, Chrysler, Ford. I'd kill to see a 435 like mine go up against an L72. 100 cfm more carb shouldn't make that much difference, but GD that 435 is a monster. I made mine an L-89 but that's just for weight and cool factor. It is 1000% factory in a '67 Corvertte coupe, but I'd happily go up against any engine from back in the day. Lost a little zip when I went back to a 4.10 from a 4.56, but even as a weekend car, that's a lot of noise with side pipes.
l89 alum-headed tri power-very cool-I would love to compare the Tri to the L72
very nice
A predictable outcome but still great video. Like to see the 90s lt1 with a hotcam
It's all about airflow. The Gen 1 SBC has 23 degree heads, the Gen 2 LT1 has 21 degree heads, and the LS1 has 15 degree heads. All things even, the compression, cam specs, etc, the LS1 will still out perform them all because it will flow more air, because of the more efficient heads. What I would like to see you test is a SBC with same compression, and same cam specs as the LS1, but with 15 degree heads. Who will win?
lt1 had 23 degree heads stock just like the gen 1 sbc.
@@sebastianwallace268 Your right, my bad. It's the Trick Flow LT1 heads that have the 21 degree valve angle. Still the LS1 kills them all.
@@xlr8r3VA can't beat the original small block Chevy sound though can't really find a better sounding engine than a cammed carbed 350
You also missed the L31, LOL
The one with the best head's. Going out on a limb
Do a stock gen 2 330hp Lt4 vs Ls1/Ls6. And a full gen 2 Lt1 build would be great. And by the way, when is the Lt1 and 4.3 internals swap going to happen?
Without watching first I'm guessing the ls1 even though it's rated the least
SAE net vs gross. You're comparing apples to oranges.
A kid showed me his catfish camaro on the chassis dyno with a cai put down 345whp. No wonder them cars run high 12s with bolt ons
Personally I blame squirrels
Great test... my generation..lol...in my 50s now
Im going with the 5.7 for the win!
Just discovered this channel and I’m so glad I did! I just bought a 1969 Pontiac firebird with a 350 in it and I’m looking to do a rebuild/add some more hp and torque. My question is, have you ever done a build on a Pontiac 350 from that year? What’s the Max I can push it to and still keep it fairly “reliable” thanks in advance if you see this. Liked and subscribed!
I have not done a pontiac yet
@@richardholdener1727 no pressure, but it would be awesome if you did!😅
Would like to see ZZ6-dyno run ,with carb and fuel injection results too!
it's not a factory motor-but I think westech has run 1
Ok a TPI 350 with Vortec Heads and Low Energy Ignition (Low Intensity=LS) system.
So so what exactly made the gen 2 lt1 make that much power when it was rated for 300 hp when it came out, and 275 in the camaros?
I am actually scared of LT1 manafolds because nobody has ever done that
LS1s ought to bolt up Edelbrock has one but cost 700 and nobody knows if it even works
Do a camaro LT1 with aluminum heads N/A with the lt4 hotcam.
nice video. always fun to watch. do something weird, i have an idea, 265 sbc with vortec heads, use only gm parts.
I don't think the bore size will work with that head
@@richardholdener1727 just stock gm vortec head with 1.94/1.50 valves, might fit? would be neat to see how much power to get out of the smallest sbc!
@@richardholdener1727 - same thing I thought, 265s were only 3.5" bore, smaller than even a 305. I question weather or not even the 305 H.O. 416 castings would work on the 265.
What about the LT4?
I Like it. Would "like" to have seen the early engines upgraded with modern heads, stock intakes and then the RPM airgap intake square & RPM spread bore, with the original factory cams? The heads were definitely the weakest link, then the intakes. Oh well if the Crypto alt coins do a mini moon shot before the Big crash, I will build my own dyno facility and test to my hearts content. Yes, I understand these were done in the past, because I already watched all of them!!!! That is How Much I Like your work!
why would we upgrade just the early motors (which was done for another vid)
@@richardholdener1727 the late model gets plenty of Love? The early ones, even the 327 (Great test series by way!), all got cams 1st or at the same time as the heads? Then you/I will build a gen one like a LS, thinner rings, equivalent sloppy specs cam, similar rocker ratio, compression, oiling system, same header size and I suppose an RPM Airgap with a 750 cfm holley. Since the gen1 motors have ZERO intake systems that can compete with the LS! Yes, I am pretty sure who will win, by how much? Just dreaming Bud, keep up the Great work. If the tail is not left hanging, no one can yank it? Peace
Never got the lt5 vs ls6
Really strange that back 20 yrs ago when I had my Firehawk, 95 model with T56 and mail order tune as my only mod, I had no problem at all keeping up with the supposedly much faster LS f-bodies... considering this test shows that engine made about 50hp more.
Aww tiger 1945 why did you delete your completely stupid post? I was looking forward to replying.
I would like to see the 96 corvette lt4 engine.
I am here ✋️ sbc fan 👍
I tried telling people for years that the lt1 made more power then what GM was claiming!!!
I’d like to the the GEN2 LT-4 … factory rated at 330hp, however word in the street is that it was de rated on paper to make room for the LS1 …
It’s actually impressive what those old engines did on iron heads, flat cams, poor head design and on one case the hood old quadrajet …
Does the LT4 make much more power than a standard LT1? I know they had a hotter cam and slightly better heads and intake. I had a customer for years that had 2 LT4 Corvettes and I was impressed in the 1990's by them. One was built by Doug Rippie though and was a 383. It was the only C4 Corvette that would keep up with the later C5 and C6 cars!
I was thinking the same thing. The 96 LT4 should be the highest performance small block before the LS1. I know an LT4 powered C4 corvette would hang with an early LS1 C5.
LT1 300hp, LT4 330hp. LT4 has better heads, and intake, really needs hot cam and headers. Both need coil on plug conversion, optispark sucks.
Maybe he can add an lt4 in with the mix of the ls6 vs lt5.
@@fortier2727
Any engine with that optispark design is trash
Period
when you do these comparisons can at end of video after you sign off put the dyno comparison ultimate chart up for 5 or 10 seconds
the charts are in the video
I'm thinking the (405hp net) LT5 would be around 460- 470hp with a custom tune, measured this way?
Can't wait to find out ☺
So, what kind of power can the lt1 make with port fuel injection?
I had an LT1 '70 'vette and it came from the factory with a Q-jet. It also had factory air, despite the fact you "couldn't get AC on one". Car was last in PA and still has less than 50k on it...
LT1 in 1970 did not come with Q-Jet
@@richardholdener1727 wasnt it rated at 370 hp in the Vette and the 360 number comes from the Camaro Z28 I believe.
@@richardholdener1727 Yep, been hearing that for 50 years. Also didn't come with AC. Except, of course, if you ordered it that way from a buddy who owned a big-ass GM dealership...
Had a '73 Montego MX, too; couldn't be had in triple black. Didn't come in a 351W/FMX combo, especially not with limited slip 2.8 geared rear...except mine did.
Point being back before you were born the factory would equip anything they had any way you wanted, if it existed in their line and you had the cash...and a dealer who knew what boxes to check.
and will bigger injectors help?
Whats realy the Best cam for LT1 ?
The Gen 2 LT1 was jipped The LS1 had Factory 1.6 roller rockers
and got 5oo lift cam
Id like to see the stock LT1 with 1.6 rollor rockers

LS motors have 1.7 rockers and much better heads and intake and windage tray etc...
lol I just think the LT1 has unfinished Business lol
wasnt the lt1 in this a smaller than 4 inch bore?
I think LS is a very cool Race car engine .
But my 97 camaro Z28 6 speed hasnt lost to any of the LS Family
But I havnt ran any Boosted ones I dont think .
The ford Airfoil mind trick didnt work on me lol
It takes a lot to Beat a 11 flat second car
Running stock exaust port matched and hogged out manifolds
lol
They got short changed on compression
and later on weight
it will take a realy expensive head and cam package to beat my lt1
lol
The NHRA Stocker record for 97 camaro Z28 6 speed
is 10.730 google it lol
my 97 Z28 won Grudge night Against about every High horse Engine there is
even the local Race cars lol
And it did it through Stock exaust Manifolds lol no cats though
I think the thinner casting 561 heads are way faster like 400 horse
usually winning by 8-9 car lengths against the all the LS clan
a lot of it is Driver skill but the other half is Definately Engine
Have you ever gotten to compare the numbers of a Pontiac Ram Air III engine vs the Ram Air IV engine? I always wondered exactly what they made and just how far apart in power they actually were in stock configuration.
no Pontiacs yet

LT4 versus LS1.... you'd be surprised.
5.7 Hemi vs 5.7L LS1 would also be a great comparison.
I think I have that
Great video. LT4 was 330hp. Wonder where it falls in this line up
Probably close to 400hp measured this way, and with headers and tune
That 400 is with headers an tune
Not stock
Thus that 400 wouldn't count in a legitimate comparison
Perhaps you should pay attention better
SB 2.2... is king of the 5.7 liters.
What about the one year only LT-4?
LS6 is king of pushrod 5.7
The Ls6 manafold was about 40 extra horse
Just a Edebrock high rise added 20 horse on old 350
Wheres the push rods High Ram HA HA
The LS6 Didnt Come out for 10 years lol after LS
the LT1 rockers were same as old 350 Advertised at 1.5 ratio
But were actualy 1.324 And ment to be a full roller engine
That would put lt1 cam at 506 and 520 lift evening up the the LS1 cam
1st a set of crane gold 1.5 roller rockers
cause its lift x rocker ratio is actual lift
the actual specs on lt1 heads were 177 intake and 75 ccs exaust
Yup They actually exeeded the advertised runner lol
port match the intake ,heads and exaust and push the port match through intake runner
pinch point and round golf ball bit the floor of intake runner a hole every quarter inch
And drill the 4 mm hole in bottom of Throttle body to 6 mm
or find the 96-97 561 heads thinner casting 200 on ebay lol
and run 1.5 crane gold roller rockers
and drill the 4mm to 6mm hole in throttle body .
cause the little throttle body is maxed 48 actualy with the hole 52 mm
making it 54 thats 50 more cfm at 6000 rpm .
Thats just what I call a Tune up vs your LS6 high Ram and let titans Slug it out

The 70 LT1 should have made more power and reved higher than the L46 considering the bigger cam and better intake.
