How Farms Work is a UA-cam channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. Our videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and GMO crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R. We also run a John Deere 9510 combine.
Be sure to subscribe for new videos every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!

Great vid ryan. Messing with those babies not only keep them from being psycho, it starts the relationship.

Gotta love self-professed animal lovers who don't give enough of a fuck about animals to learn anything about them. They don't care about animals, just some idea they made up about what they think they are. They like to use animals for their little stories because animals can't laugh at them.

First comment? Do you typically try to have your beef cows freshen in spring as opposed to earlier in the year like other producers do? If so, is there a reason for that other than the lack of warmth in the winter? First calf, yay! RIP Rosie.

Another thing you could do for Farm Day is to have someone who lives in the area bring they're Draft horses over and pull a trailer for rides!!! I know a lot of vegetable farmers do that around here and it's allways a good time for everyone. Talk to you later and thanks again.

That's a very involved question. It really depends on what kind of operation you're applying for and the size of it. If it's a small farm, you're probably going to be doing something of everything, including the some of the manual labor yourself. On larger operations you may be sharing the work with several managers, each of you doing something different...this person might be overseeing the finances, that one is overseeing livestock care, and that other guy may be in charge of sales.
Farmers need to be jacks of all trades and be able to do a very wide range of things. In a very general sense you will need some strong math skills, marketing, sales, people skills, solid knowledge of the biology and ecology of your stock and your location, understand legal knowledge of the agricultural laws and regulations of your area, safety knowledge (because farming is a great way to die early), and being able to troubleshoot all manner of mechanical, financial, and physiological problems of your plants, animals, people, and profits.
You need to be able to make sound decisions on what stock you want to work with (plants, fungus, animals, etc.), how much seed or stock to order, draw up planting and harvest schedules, figure out how you're going to plant and harvest it (there's a million different ways to do things on a farm), be able to manage people and tell them where to go and what to do, be able to keep your equipment and technology serviced, manage schedules for all employees, understand how the market works, decide when and to whom to sell your crops to for maximum return, figure out how to meet production goals, budget and manage cash flow, and most of all be creative and being able to innovate with what you've got in order to solve problems...because dealing with curve balls you TOTALLY didn't expect out of left field is a constant in agriculture.
If you have no experience, then you're going to need a solid college education to get you started. You can get accreditation as a farm manager.
Farming is an interesting job where you get to deal with all manners of highs and lows and "WTF?!" moments. You will need all your brains and brawn to pour your knowledge, blood, sweat, life, and tears into what you do with very little thanks or money for any of it. You will be angry, stressed, exhausted, frustrated, fed up, and wonder what the hell you are doing with your life A LOT. You will ACHE in ways you cannot comprehend and suffer physically as you age and your body wears out from the stress, labor, and environmental factors.
You're also going to see and do amazing, beautiful, wonderous things not many people get to do anymore. Sunrises that will take your breath away. Thrills watching a newborn calf standing for the first time, or seeing the first green pokes coming up from the soil. Bust a gut laughing, and loving, and crying, and praying with the people around you. You will feed the WORLD.
If this is your dream, your calling, your passion, then you won't want to do anything else and will smile on your deathbed. Let NOTHING stop you from achieving your dream.
Best of luck and we hope to see you in the field someday. :)

longtail4711 -Were you talking about my question? I was talking about Farm Day and bringing in some draft horses and not about a farm manager. I'm not sure who's question you're referring to?

Lucky for you catching your debit card... I was hit with a $150 something charge that went through at a clothing store in the U.K. Then a $2300 charge got flagged at the same place... I've never even been to the U.K.! Had to go into my bank branch and it took way longer than it should have to get it sorted out, but I eventually got all my money back.
