Painting flowers in watercolour - using layers and masking fluid

- Spring is in the air and the flowers are bursting forth, so it is lovely to capture their beauty before they wilt and fade. Using simple petal and leaf shapes we are going to layer watercolour over masking fluid to create a beautiful floral tondo (that's a circle painting to you and me). Three layers of masking and three layers of watercolour build up surprisingly complex shapes and depth, but the brush strokes are really simple and easy to do. And I think this would be a fantastic way of getting to know all about using masking fluid, as well as enjoying a riot of colour.
If you have never used masking fluid, please take a look here: • How to use masking flu...
I hit upon this as a subject, as I was lucky to be given a box of Artistro watercolours to try out. I've done a full product review here: • Review of Artistro Wat...
However they really don't suit my wet in wet way of working, so I thought how can I play to their strengths and I think this layered painting is it. I so enjoyed painting it, and I hope you enjoy watching. I think doing something similar in shade of the same colour could be really cool too. This is on a half sheet of watercolour paper, but using a full sheet would have great impact.
I used acrylic paint pens to add tiny bits of detail at the end. But you could use acrylic paint or other ink, if you don't have those.
The nice people at Artistro are giving 10% off products in their Amazon USA, UK, Australia and Canada stores. Just use the promo code LIZCHADERTON

Lovely - and as you say, lots of possibilities to build upon - thankyou Liz! 😄
You are so welcome!
Love the end result ! Thanks for sharing your process.
You are so welcome! I don’t paint this way often, but it’s fun to change it up every once in a while.
Liz, thank you!

Oh, what a great idea! Those paints did surprisingly well for this style. Lovely and fresh, thanks so much for sharing this with us!
Thanks so much 😊
those are lovely, still no flowers here.... can't wait to see the blooms!
the daffodils are glorious at the moment!
This is delightful! I think you were absolutely brave for taking the flowers on with the opaque and not very blending paints! Wow! ❤️
Thank you so much! I thought the paints would behave themselves here.
I didn’t know that a circular composition was called a “Tondo” Liz. I love the circular format and the depth you created with layers of masking (-: Marion
it’s surprising the complexity you can build with just a few layers
Beautiful
Thank you
Lovely
I have a full course to paint a tondo over at www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk if you are interested
I love this!! It was so beautiful I had to try it!! It really is an exercise in planning. My first one was terrible but the second one has promise. Thank u for the wonderful demo.
yes, you do need to plan. if you are on Instagram (actually she might be on YT), look at Creative Ingrid. she uses this method and is totally brilliant.

Hello Liz, I'm a new subscriber from Florida. I've found you to be very helpful. I want to ask you about something from an older video about granulating colors. (I wasn't sure if you'd see the message if I posted it there) You mentioned that true yellow ochres will granulate vs. synthetic ones. Do you happen to know which ones are actually true? Thanks for the help!! Vicki
thanks for the message and I do see all comments.😀 Jane Blundell is the queen of pigments so I would have a look at what she says: janeblundellart.blogspot.com/2016/09/a-14-colour-granulating-earth-pocket.html for example
