Thankfully these guys know exo from dingo killing voice, so they got the chance to listen some legendary songs of exo. First win on music shows! There's about 3 major music shows, one for each major broadcasting station in Korea. When a group debuts or make a comeback- they go preform the song on music shows for a few weeks. Its an important part of promoting the songs. Music show wins are a pretty big deal, it pretty much convinces the company to keep funding the group. That's why people get so worried when a group is 2+ years old and has no wins, they could disband. Like BTS got their first win in 2015 two years after debut. A music show win pretty much certifies that the song is popular in Korea.

The fact is that all these songs were from the golden era & mostly by 2nd & 3rd gen groups. They literally set the standard that everyone sees today in K-pop. 2nd & 3rd gen was so fun, chaotic & diverse.
When it says first win it means their first win on a music show. So when a song comes out they promote through music shows and at the end they announce a song that won based off of streaming numbers and you can also vote. First win meaning their first time winning on a music show which is always a big deal and a emotional time for artists. Hopefully that helps lol

@@nspreacts I thought I should add that first wins are also big deals for kpop artists because it means they have graduated from nugudom AND they are less at risk of disbandment. A “nugu” group is a kpop group that isn’t well-known or still flying under the radar of public recognition. They could be rookie groups or groups that hang by on a thread for years.“Nugu” in Korean (누구) means “who?” So like if someone says a groups name and almost everyone is like “who’s that??” A first win usually boosts the group’s career by putting them on the map, and also is something their label wants to see as they decide whether or not to continue investing in and supporting that group.
EXO's GROWL is the industry's national anthem, like every new group that debuts gotta cover and perform that song at some point it's so iconic

Shinee is also super iconic as a kpop group because they were really the first group who could DANCE. Like, DANCE dance. Before, kpop idols were kinda stereotyped as being very manufactured, that they couldn’t really dance well, and not even sing or dance the best (not that they all were BAD singers, just that Korea viewed kpop as for teenagers, and more about looks that vocal skill/talent - Korea still really loves and prefers ballad singers, and ballad singers usually top the charts more than kpop groups). They were thought to just have pop-y songs without any substance and very basic dancing. Shinee set the bar HIGH and brought not only great, complex choreography and SKILL to the industry. They made it the new industry STANDARD.

Actually at 17:00 HOT - Candy did not come out in 2016, that was just the year of the official MV on UA-cam, that song is from the late 90's, along with Seo Taiji that you saw later on.
The whole "Pick Me" variations are from a survival TV series called "Produce", the different seasons. The viewers need to pick and vote for someone.

SONG, INCLUDING NON-K-POP FANS.
The thing winner and wannaone have in common is they were both formed on survival shows. (Wanna one being a part of a season of the famous PRODUCE series that have made a lot of successful groups)
Basically in kpop, making a tv show showing different trainees (sometimes from different companies) fight and perform to earn a spot in a final group is a sure fire way to gain attention. (also a lot of these shows have celebrity mentors but advertise that the FANS can vote and pick who will make it to the final group (the produce series actually got caught up in a whole voting manipulation scandal)
Winner's show was a little different because it was within the company (kinda like the show Stray Kids were on)- Winner won so they got the name winner, the group that lost is IKON. (Both under YG entertainment)
Ring Ding Dong became NOTORIOUS when it dropped for being an absolute earworm, and also for being played all the time EVERYWHERE. I believe it was even banned briefly from playing on the radio during Korea’s national college entrance testing days, since it was supposedly so distracting/addictive. (Not sure if that is an urban legend, though). But yes, it’s one of those songs that, even if you think you don’t like it at first, you’ll find yourself humming it to yourself at random moments or it’ll be stuck in your head for 5 days a week later 🤣
B.A.P's ONE SHOT is SOOOO ICONIC...you guys HAVE to check it out. Their MV storylines are one of the most incredible storylines that have ever been written in kpop

BTS is the only legendary band from 3rd generation. They literally made it capable for kpop to easily enter the us market now. Literally grammy nominated, caused us music shows to open a kpop category, first to perform on the us music shows, spoke an UN and many many many many more. Their own Korean government has stated it's because of BTS why their economy got better, they spread korean culture, gain a lot of tourist attraction and most are there for bts concerts only.

@@selizee729 they're not talking about legendary in the music industry, just in the kpop industry. BTS and exo have the same amount of songs in the top 15 right now on melon (which korean fans use). BTS is far from the only legendary 3rd gen group in kpop, even if they are the most well known.

"So many pick me songs" mnet got like a chain of survival shows, where a bunch of trainees compete and make a final lineup for a debut group. So Produce 101 or Girls/Boys Planet are shows from mnet to make groups with the people voting.

the pick me songs are theme songs of idol producer tv shows, which are very popular in korea. these shows take many trainees of many different kpop companies and have them compete to be in temporary (usually 2 years) groups.

They were MASSIVE and went straight to the top competing with BTS and EXO. I was a fan of all 3 groups but Wanna one was dominating in popularity.
