    Was Revenge of Death Adder/The Duel an either/or scenario? Because yeah, I'd have much rather have had Revenge of Death Adder. The Duel is fine though, I love the touch of including the gnomes. Great video, thanks for posting

      I'm not sure what Sega was doing with Revenge of Death Adder. I understood why it never hit the Genesis, it would have needed to be cut back heavily. But Saturn man, it was a perfect fit. Why they never released there is a real bummer.

      @@SegaLordX I have often wondered and do you know if it possible for someone to convert the likes of "Revenge of Death Adder" or any other unconverted arcade games and make them into a "homebrew" game for the Psuedo Saturn ? I know it can be theoretically done as I already have a "Sega Master System" emulator for the Psuedo Saturn and the games "Flashback", and unreleased games such as Major Damage and Fighting Force, for example and they work fine on my Saturn.

    Fighters Megamix is the best 3D fighter of the 32bit generation by far. Such a wonderful mix of styles and so upbeat. It could only have been made better by adding a story of some form in my opinion. Dead or Alive on Saturn is very close though...

    Agreed over Revenge of Death Adder it should have been on the Saturn. Just a couple of points though .. VF on the Saturn run at the same speed as the Arcade game (30fps) I can't think of any Model 1 game that didn't run at 30 fps Also I think you should have mentioned the stunning sound of VF on the Saturn, not just the better music (thanks to CD-DA) but also the bone crushing sound effects which were much higher quality than the Model 1 version, made great use of the Saturn's sound chip and still sound super impressive to this day.

      My friends and I are big Tekken fans. I had Saturn with VF2 & Fighters Megamix and a PS1 with Tekken 2 & 3 back in the day. Tekken got much more play. But in the recent year I downloaded a 32X emu with the VF rom and shared it along w/some cheap retro pc controllers. We can't stop playing it. It has more depth than I had realised. We bet lotto scratch offs on who wins lol. Tekken is still cool af but VF is like new and fresh. Currently seeing who can get the furtherst in Ranking mode. I also have VF2 on 360 now but the controllers don't feel right for a fighter. I must reclaim a Saturn!

      @@AlfaRomeoQ Because tekken was "cooler" with more modes. It had more "balls" and played in the ps which gained huge popularity while sega fought with themselves internally. When you don't fully believe in your own console than its a problem.

      Virtua Fighter was something completely different from the 2D stuff and looked deceptively simple while being at least as deep as something like Capcom 2D fighters. The Japanese got this and loved the game. All of Sega's 3D fighters sold a bunch of Saturns over there. Westerners preferred the flashy graphics of Toh Shin Den and the button-mashing accessibility of Tekken though. Being into martial arts, I really loved VF from the start. No fireballs, no green monsters, no buckets of blood... just awesomely smooth, strategic martial arts action. It was the first fighting game series that I really loved.

    I remember having mixed feelings towards The Duel cause it was a good fighting game however I'd still rather have another Golden Axe on a slash 'em up genre. Virtua Fighter had a good run but its lack of personality as you mentioned in the video would eventually wear it down. Due to that, Fighter's Megamix was the definitive Am2 game for me. Also, I never understood the Virtua Fighter realistic approach on the moves while the characters would jump 16 feet high like they were on the moon. The character physics when being punched never pleased me too, they looked like a wooden plank, wobbling with each punch. Tekken had more interesting characters since its first release with different endings, moves and camera angles that were far cooler. Not to say I only mentioned Virtua Fighter greatest rival, Dead or Alive too was developed on the same sega model 2 and had far more personality. Great video, keep up the good work.

    Great coverage as always, but I do think you are short-changing VF Kids when it comes to the extra content. There are a lot of interesting modes and customizations available, and most importantly of all there were unique (and well-done) FMV endings for every character that you could unlock and then view later in the theater menu. It gave you a reason to keep coming back to finish the game, and this was almost a full year before Fighters Megamix. It's a game that's really underrated next to all SEGA's other excellent 3D fighters, but it's an interesting novelty that was made with a lot more love than you'd expect.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  5 років тому

      Hmm, I'll concede that VF Kids did give a gameplay incentive over many of the others in this video because of the addition of endings, but these endings were more short, comical skits than any real form of resolution and character development. I guess I just wanted more from Sega by this point, as fighting games elsewhere just had so much more content.

    The Duel is an underrated game. I think time would be a lot kinder to it if Sega had released RODA first. What we really needed was a new Eternal Champions game. Sega messed up there.

    Last Bronx is really quite underrated , and is unfairly seen as the "odd one out" . It plays really well , and imo is the best looking Saturn fighter along with DOA.
    Interesting thing about the PAL version was that it was optimised and thus runs at 576i (even sharper than the 704X480 the NTSC version ran at) , however when playing it I couldn't help but notice there was more slowdown and the speed was lower in general than the NTSC version (almost as if running it at higher res caused extra slowdown.

    It's interesting seeing a very crude implementation of motion blur in Last Bronx, using a method that would be much more refined later on the Dreamcast version of Shenmue.

    Agree about Virua Fighter, I loved it. The graphics weren't the best, but the movement of the characters was excellent and the moves were simple, but realistic and fluid. I don't want or need a back story or any story in a game, I just want different characters I can play and get straight in. Virtua Fighter 2 was fabulous!......Might have to get my old console out!

    The only 3D Saturn fighters that stand the test of time for me are...
    1) VF Vanilla- Because of it’s historical significance as the first ever 3D fighter and my nostalgia for the Saturn launch.... I never did like the Remix version, and....
    2) VF2 & DOA- in large part due to the Saturn’s high res mode / 60fps showing it could techically best the PS1 in the right hands. Plus being great games.

  • @mashakos1

    VF2 was a neat magic trick by AM2, essentially the only thing on screen that was texture mapped 3D models was the two fighting characters. Everything else: the floor, the background, the sky, was 2D with clever transformation algorithms to fake a 3D look. I can sympathise with Saturn gamers feeling hope that things would get better from there but sadly since it was a parlour trick... VF2 was essentially the technological swan song of the Saturn. Panzer Dragoon 2 and Saga were bigger games but nothing reached the heights of impressiveness of VF2, running at the same resolution and framerate of a VGA dreamcast.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  5 років тому

      The floor, backgrounds, sky, etc. where done by the systems VDP2 processor. There was no clever trickery, that is what it was designed to do. It was a background generator that could scale and rotate two 3D planes completely separate from the VDP1 sprite and polygon generator. It was indeed one of the reasons the Saturn was more challenging to program for, but many games used it very similar to what VF2 did.

    • @mashakos1
      @mashakos1 5 років тому +1

      @@SegaLordX VDP2 handles 2D background layers, typical of old pre-3D arcade platforms like the CPS-2 or neo geo, or the obvious one: Sega's System 32. AM2 engineers figured out a way to use the 2D background layer as a fake floor by implementing matrix transforms on the 2D plane to contort it in sync with the main 3D engine's camera movements. Hope that helps explain things.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  5 років тому

      I'm afraid that isn't the case. VDP2 was indeed a 2D background layer chip, but it also did 3D planes. 2 of them in fact, as seen in games like Last Bronx. Many games used the 3D plane from VDP2, including the Panzer Dragoon games, a ton of the systems shooters like Radiant Silvergun, and even other fighters before VF2 like Virtua Fighter Remix. VDP2 was a versatile chip that assisted the Saturn's 3D engines in countless games. Nothing about VF2's use was special.

    • @mashakos1
      @mashakos1 5 років тому +1

      @@SegaLordX the 3D transformations are merely X,Y matrix transforms made to look 3D. Think of the transform tool in photoshop, if you hold Ctrl/Cmnd and move the corners around to warp the shape... you essentially get what VDP2 was doing.

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  5 років тому

      We don't want to get too far from the original statement. You said AM2 used "clever transformation algorithms to fake a 3D look". VDP2 had the ability to do, by design, infinite 3D playfields that could be manipulated as large polygons that could be scaled, rotated, and given details like a textured polygon. This was the ring in nearly all of Sega's 3D fighting games. This was the ground in all the Panzer Dragoon games. It was many of the 3D backgrounds in the Saturn's shoot'em up library, such as Thunder Force V. It was no clever algorithm. It's what VDP2 was designed to do. And tons of games did it. That's what I'm saying.
