      The engine was "slanted" 30 degrees so it would fit in the engine bay of the new 1960 Valiant without the need for a bulge in the hood.

      i don't any 6 or worse-4/or-2L/or-9K-RPM-screams( i got into the brands because they look great and mine didn't end up being chevy-fide because dodge makes good lower torque-engine's it's the missing/thin-paint/wires and for 60's-era lacking OD-trans interiors/sound-systems was lacking( one-speaker/mono being passed off as luxurious LOLZ's compared with quadriphonic systems in the other brand's/same-era and or new-models ) or so-so ect but as mopar-people you probably know that by now ) in a dodge/Chrysler-LLC past the 1st-G-hemi/1950 ( pre 1950's for me is v8's( V10/vipers/SRT-truck is a pass*ish ) or straight-L8's + larger ci/HP as that's USA/dodge marketing/customers ) is sacrilege, turbans/BEV/hybrid's/fuel-cell getting a * pass as example 1960's there's a B's-or-C's&dart-prototypes/leasing-dealers with jet-power and or it kicked the 426-hemi at it's own-game just not the piss-poor MPG/EPA because of the fact it couldn't use a 883/stick and was stuck with a 727 that dodge refusing to add lock-up and OD-gear and mildly-hybridisation( quick-trip/cold-starts and or cities in slower traffic was a fuel-hog/maintenance-hog just as the 440-6 and 2-hemi was ) would probably also have helped but it's still pre-1990-era/DR-goodenough/lithium's-revulsion
      the only reason why iv/millennial/zoomer-generation considering ( leftovers 383/recovery boosted parts added 75-70-turbo-ect as i cannot stand 90HP/sub-300hp~ in a charger/4K-lb's~( probably less now as interiors-ect missing from being chopper's and for now under duress id do the minimum legally required for hy-way/tag's use ) way to slow ect and or agervaring-experience ) that/slanty or hurricane( or LSX or eagle/cat's but frame/exhaust plumbing doesn't play well ect ) is junkyard cheapness+i don't care/abuse's and or worry about transportation/vin's-safety( got joyrided+chopper's( to shell same effect on my K1500 80's, so no truck's and or apartments/rental-homes living as i had to a-just after being divorced winks ) around covid-era, and my 540~ci+tr6060-platform it's ready and it's looking like i need to move me plus it to a different shop/housing ect this year or later in 26~ ) and also got knocked down into poverty's/9~k-yearly( was up to ~55k best year for me ) and or career stunt'd ect
      otherwise i got EFI+7speed hemi-itis/hem-rod's and it's fully-blown/boosted lolz, got that from a form/car-show jokes
      slanted sickly and or malnutrition's sounds like a STD/body-shape/ligament( or back/spinal cord/skeletal issues ) might want to see a doctor about that lol 😂

    Slant sickness, LOL! I saw a build a few years ago. A pro build where they took the whole car. Balanced it to the nuts. Gave it a 4 barrel aluminum intake and headers. They used a fairly throaty cam. They dynoed the thing. 160hp. Really? I'm sure the guys wife was impressed. That's over twice as much as just before they rebuilt it. So a 318 with a bandit/pirate build. would likely get 250-300hp. Which would get better fuel economy?

They're all slant 6's with 3 on the trees. They also built 318 Demons and a few other models of Chrysler products here. A 70-72 dart is on my list to make a nice Sunday driver. I for one am a slant 6 fan. When I was a young teen in the 60's I recall reading a Mopar racing book that featured a rail that had a 225 slant 6 and a stock auto transmission in it. They stated it ran in both C and D class competitively by running the tach to 3k then dumping it into D. It was the only rail there that had a working reverse gear. I thought the story was awesome. I had a slant 6 of my own in a 61 Lancer and dropped a 225 from the local junk yard in place of the worn out 170. Didn't quite fit but I drove it for more than 3 years and a dozen clutches. I look forward to the build.

    It was old man owned and mint before she bought it. My neighbors truck would barely spin on gravel! He actually got it spin slightly on pavement, spinning like made on gravel before hitting the pavement. My 77 van came with Slant 6 with huge holes in the block. But a friend mentioned draining the oil out of one and driving it, trying to kill it, took forever.

    Unpopular opinion: A well running inline6 runs super smooth and refined. And has better balance then a V8.
    There is a reason Jaguar (XK) and BMW (M20, M30 and the later 24valve engines) and Mercedes (M110) offered inline6 engines for a long loooong time. Even Volvo(B30, B6304) and GM/Opel/Vauxhall did it.
    So Dodge was not wrong when offering the slant6.

    The mighty slant! I had one in an 85 d150, pitched #6 out the block one night, still started back up drove home at highway speed! Kept it around to do dump runs. Pour a couple litres of oil in the hole in block and crank it up and go! Made about 20 trips never skipped a beat! Pulled the head to give to a friend, all but two push rods were bent. I have no idea how that thing ran so damn well. I guess it just wanted to live.

      @DeadDodgeGarage  Місяць тому

      Amazing - and not at all the only story I’ve heard like that. A friend of a friend had one that blew #6 and it took the starter mounting ears with it. He jammed some rags in the hole and drove it that way for a while. Just took a bit of a dance jamming the starter back into place to get it to fire up.

      Reading again your post, i see 1963. So that would have been the 196 Alloy motor, whereas the 232 came out in 1964, introduced in the new Typhoon. They still made 4800 odd 196 in early 64 production tho. The 232's (out to 258 in the 70's) were still used in the 4.0L Jeeps in the 90's by Chrysler, but a little more mod-con

    If I remember colorectally; the hydro-slant's lifters are fed oil from the rocker shaft, through the pushrod, DOWN to the lifter. They would have had to completely re-engineer the block to make an oil passage that fed the lifters first. I heard an anecdote years ago that initially, the Slant was designed with splash rublication to keep costs down as other sixes in the 1950's (Hudson, Studebaker, Chevrolet) didn't have pressurized lubrication. I think the Chevy six got full-pressure lube in '55 or '56. I say that's an anecdote because I've never been able to fully substantiate it and also the timeline doesn't really align.... unless Chrysler began designing the Slant in 1954 or 1955. That kind of information isn't easily found.
    Part of the "Performance" game is also "Reliability". I love owning a classic car that still runs points and a carburetor but lights off easily and can be daily driven. A car that makes 500 horsepower but barely runs long enough to get warm isn't..... fun. Not everything needs to be fast.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Місяць тому +1

      Yes, that is correct. I got to that later in the video. And the splash oil lifter design was certainly retained for cost cutting reasons. The oil galley is on that side of the block, and I think they could’ve enlarged it and added passages to the lifters without too much difficulty. But Chrysler thought it unnecessary I guess.

    Really seeing a healthy running Slant-6 torn down to see nothing is wrong with it, is all the joy i need.
    No need to see absolutely twisted and sheared steel carnage to sate the engine tear down hunger.
    You were talking of building a street slant-6, will this block and other factory components be modified VIA blueprinting to shed more weight off of certain casting flash?
    Thanks Jamie for another informational & educational slant-6 shenanigans.

    I have seen slants run when others would have broken down crying... I threw a rod in my '65 Valiant and still drove it 45 miles home, where I sold it to a neighbor who put in a 318... I had a friend do the same, right through the block, he removed the rod, welded a plate over the hole and drove it as a 5 cylinder for 4 years. Mighty little motors. 50 miles without oil pressure? Making a clattering sound? Replace the pushrods, and get another 40k miles on it before rebuilding the engine... I have a lot of respect for those things... I've owned 7 Slant 6 cars without major issue, pretty much... Except for the Valiant.

    Don't forget to put a drilled out restriction plug in the oil hole coming up out of the top of the block that goes to the head. it will put more oil to the main bearings then most of the oil to the head saving the bearings life .
