It's exactly what you said Josh. Expansion is here and all it means is that Alabama, Clemson, LSU, and Ole Miss teams can still win a natty despite losing bad games early because of that GIANT, 12 team sized safety net. No true cinderella to be found here
Yup and Riley needs to be booted out of his 17 million dollar beach front home in Orange County! He needs to prove that he can win, to justify USC paying him that much money. Until then he needs to be put in one of those tents at Academy sports and outdoors 👍
Hey Josh, at the beginning of the show you asked how can teams fix penalties. For the last seven years I have been coaching high school football here in Missouri. Along my coaching career I have dealt with teams who struggle in the penalty department. What I will offer you is a different perspective. Right or wrong, is to each his own, but a different perspective I can give. When dealing with teams that have an abundance of penalties theres 3 different scenarios or trains of thought. 1. Is it a team that struggles with technique? Things like holding, pass interference, face masks. The types of things that can be fixed with repetition after repetition of doing the right the things right, or most of the time, the little things right. So as a coaching staff do we have to teach our blocking technique better, or our tackling, our coverage, etc. 2. Is it a team that struggles with the mental aspect of the game, or perhaps losing focus. Examples, false starts, off sides, maybe personal fouls. If that’s the case I have found it to be effective to “punish” the players during practice. So every mishap during practice or a game, may lead to up down, sprints, etc. Now based on the team the coach can be emotional during this, and by emotional I mean angry, or perhaps very goal oriented, it just depends. We live by the philosophy of, “the pain of discipline or the pain of regret” So we would rather be miserable in practice and do things right than and win the game then lose the game. I would like to note that this type of “punishment” solution can also be applied to the first example. And, with that first example, you can have coaches calling penalties in practice. Maybe even calling ones that aren’t holding or pass interference, but just understanding how particular we have to be. Now, and I apologize for the novel, here is where I offer the third and final thought. On a separate note one of the things that may play a difference is a team’s response to the penalty itself. So, getting a pass interference on a 3rd and long is devastating, but how do we respond? Do we hang our heads? No! The most important play is the next one, buck up and do it again. Did we get a touchdown called back for holding? Suck it up, do it again. What you want is a team that is numb to penalties, no reaction, all business. So if we got a touchdown called back. Oh well, let’s go do it again. How you create this is simulating it in practice. For instance, have the defense come out for a drive, let them battle, and then at the end throw the flag. Forcing them to do it again. Then when they get good at making the second stop, you throw a third flag and make them do it again and again. Anyways Josh this is just one man’s opinion! Also, this is coming from a high school coach and I know the world of college football is much different. Thanks as always for an amazing show! I love listening in, on my way to and from work!
It’s obvious that you guys are friends, but that last bit from Cole was awesome. As a mushy dad of 3 little kids my brain said “precious” but you’re 2 grown men so we’ll go with awesome.
Hey Josh, South Carolina fan here, and every time you have brought up officiating this year, it has helped. The powers to be have been watching your program, and at the very least you have brought this obvious negative to the forefront, and at the very best change will occur. I agree with you concerning "part-time officials" and how in the world are we still using this process when gazillions upon gazillions of dollars after all the bills are paid are being made by all the big conferences. I have an idea....how bout we make all the conference commissioners non-paid positions and use that funding to pay for a full time "official" network. We would see funding surfacing right away if their precious salaries were at stake. Come on college football, what Josh Pate is saying is so accurate and this issue is not going away. It is time to change it, and now that college football has publicly gotten into bed with gambling partners it is even more important now than ever before, so change it! It is not rocket science. Make them full time positions, and manage them! Come on...we are waiting!! (thanks again Josh for bringing this to the surface) And there will never be an appropriate resolution to the SC-LSU game...ever!
Take 4. Your exactly right about what Clemson achieved against Bama those several years. They went toe to toe with an unprecedented dynasty. Gave them competition the rest of the country couldn't. Imagine the dominance of college football Bama would have had minus Clemson. My beloved Buckeyes might have competed given the opportunity, but not with the success Clemson had. Just my opinion
I think this is the reality for all the "blueblood" programs. Even UGA is not the team they were, and it's because of the new NIL/transfer changes. Under the old way, UGA and Kirby were on the way to building a real dynasty. The way he was building the roster with experienced depth and talent, something you can't do now because of transferring. There is going to be a lot more parody in college because everyone has young rosters or experienced starters yet young backups. This hurts everything, how you practice, how you prepare for match-ups etc etc. Bama fans/everyone needs to understand that what Bama did during that run is impossible going forward for anyone else, and Saban realized it. So he got the hell out with his legacy intact. Moving forward there will be a lot of 1 hit wonders in college. Random teams popping up and having great seasons.
@@dawgfather2101 I see your point. Just look at Indiana. The jury's still out on exactly how good they really are, but if they make the playoffs I would expect a lot of schools to attempt to copy their blueprint. Even robbing one hit wonders. I mean, what would stop Oklahoma, USC or any struggling blueblood from offering Indiana's coach an absurd amount of money to come there? Oh, and bring about 30 of your players with you. Just as JMU players jumped at the chance to play in the Big 10, they wouldn't hesitate to leave Indiana to play for Oklahoma
Battle Creek, Michigan here and Pate is on point with his assessment of the Michigan football program. It's a little concerning that Coach Moore didn't know he didn't have a Big Ten QB on the roster. Sharrone Moore ... Brady Hoke 2.0?

Respectfully disagree about it being shocking FSU taking a nose dive this season. FSU had only mercs from the Portal last season who Norvell knew was going to leave after his one and done! Couldn't happen to a better coach!
They actually didn't have that many 1-year mercs on the team last year but they never filled in major positions with HS recruiting, especially QB. Every Norvell recruited QB at FSU has been straight trash.
No offense to Josh but I think Brooks is too analysis/result on the field driven. Where as Josh is more an over arching themes of college football/espn stat box type analysis. Had a good conversation with a Bama fan this afternoon (I’m a Ga fan) he was impressed with Ga performance against Tx. And was worried about his team - he thinks Milroe is playing soft and might be thinking about jumping ship. Fan thought new coach appreciates a pocket passer vs runner. So milroe is bidding his time - trying to avoid injury
As a child growing up a Bama fan in Florida during the Florida, Florida State and Miami heyday, I cared then more than I ever did. To be honest the last 17 years got old. We could only lose. When we won, we did what was expected.
"If you want to go 'junction boys' mode (to use a phrase Alabama fans will recognize)" will they? Junction was when Bryant was at A&M and I've never heard a bama fan mention it.
There are plenty of us that grew up hearing about the Junction Boys and Coach Bryant eventually coming home when “Mama Called” and I’m only 33. We also know Coach Stallings’ nickname from when he played at TAMU.
Take 2. Harbaugh knew when to jump ship. And Michigan rushed to replace him with a coach they hoped would continue. Moore is in over his head. Isn't ready. I seen this coming. And depending on how long it takes them to get the coach right, their looking at and 10+ year draught of relevance. Wait and see.
Most people fail to realize that DeBoer needs to the culture at Alabama. All the penalties, the lack of discipline, the me-first attitude by some players, the lack of an elite defense, only one championship in the last six years - all this happened at the end of Nick Saban’s tenure, and now Kalen DeBoer is in the position of having to these things. The problem is not that Bama has suddenly gone off the rails, but rather that it looks exactly like it did the last several years. And if you’re a bit of an historian, consider the miracles it took to win the championships in 2015 and 2017. We could easily have been looking at only one championship since 2012.
There were a few national title seasons that Bama back doored their way into. There were also a few they blew late in the season, but they were always there as a contender 10+ games into the season. DeBoer should be fine. Theyll make the playoff in year two and all will be right again in Ttown
I think the negative feelings are based more on how they look as opposed to the actual record. The fake injury was a real low point that would have never happened before. All the stupid little dances just because they did their job for one play would have never happened. There just feels like a team of entitled spoiled babies and that includes the coaches. Nobody is driving the ship. This team will win 7 tops but more likely 6 games this year.
I think in 2015 & 2017 you described how like 80% of championships are won. In grueling hard fought games. Like he said, put ur feed on the grass. Can’t be over 30.

Unfortunately, which I say as an LSU fan, losses wont hurt yall in recruiting and if anything are beneficial in that regard as guys want to go wherever they can go and play asap and get the best pay to do so with proximity to home and facilities and traditions etc all in the mix as well but in hindsight to the 1st two things mentioned. So if anything, they'd see losses as more of a confirmation that they'll be able to come in and make a difference right away and not have to wait
Josh hurt so bad by that miss on FSU +3.5 that he had to say they could possibly beat Washington or Michigan with Jordan Travis healthy. Literally spit my food across the room laughing.
As the proud head coach of a middle school track powerhouse there is a not a chance you are "smoking" any of these boys in any event. I'd even put an Academy gift card on it.
As a realistic michigan fan I'm not out on sherronne yet but I do hope he admits some misses he made in hiring. Jim harbaugh believed in sherronne so I'll have faith for year 2. If there's no improvement then it is what it is.

Wow excited to see Josh talk about bama, and then have Cole talk about bama for another 30 minutes!!! Seriously man move on to teams worth talking about this year
Bama sells. Have your team play for 8 or 9 nattys over the past two decades bud.. then youll get your dues. As a miami fan, they were propped up for 5-6 years after their championship in 2001.. the brand is 95% of college football
I think there are probably some middle schoolers that could beat you in a race! Maybe could take anyone at elementary but middle school will have some good athletes by that time
Saban was the glue that held the Alabama expectation and competitive edge together. Daboer has not learned yet how to be the alpha among a team full of alphas
I remember it well. I'm 54 and I remember Bama mediocrity. While I'm a hardcore, lifetime Tennessee fan, I do hope DeBoer gets it together. I believe he is a winner if they will give home time to get used to Bama culture and the SEC.
Personally I think we need a complete reboot without the money in coaching as well as players. If people realized how much the current system is costing them in outragious cable and streaming fees alone they'd be pissed off.
First quick take. Even though Bama made the final four last year, and easily could have beat the eventual champs, they have been on a minor slide the last few years when compared to the Bama glory decade of say 2009-2020. That's a window that has been never done before and maybe never will again. It was inevitable that a down tick was coming. I'm not a Bama fan or hater. Just my take and opinion from the outside looking in.

@JoshPateCFB I would love to see this 💪🏃♂️🇯🇲
Hell yeah I bet on FL st because of your RN express favor picks mabe you should have put GA in there place 😂
Trojan here, biting the bullet, and feeling good about the future.
As a realistic michigan fan I'm not out on sherronne yet but I do hope he admits some misses he made in hiring. Jim harbaugh believed in sherronne so I'll have faith for year 2. If there's no improvement then it is what it is.
You said the same things about Napier that you’re saying about deboer
Teams that absolutely have to win this week:
Notre Dame✅
Indiana✅
Ohio State✅
Alabama✅
Texas✅
Texas A&M OR LSU - Texas A&M a little more so
Penn State
Take 3. We need quick trip in Ohio.
We know we won when Josh wears the white t on CBS.
My heart dropped when he said the viewer bet liberty. Like, that would be my luck if I ever tried sports betting.
I’ve never heard of quick trip I must not have one anywhere near me
Can we speak on Georgia having the best wins on the season thus far? Beating Texas AND Clemson?
Take 5. Raumen noodle needs to pick up the pace a little. Been winning but my buddy, a new Pate St subscriber by the way, has been talking smack about Klats success. I need a week to shut him up! 💯
Penalties are not a mystery it’s lack of discipline and low IQ player culture. That’s why Belichick’s philosophy on personnel, was what it was.
when yall going HD?
Wow excited to see Josh talk about bama, and then have Cole talk about bama for another 30 minutes!!! Seriously man move on to teams worth talking about this year
Bama sells. Have your team play for 8 or 9 nattys over the past two decades bud.. then youll get your dues.
As a miami fan, they were propped up for 5-6 years after their championship in 2001.. the brand is 95% of college football
Did you listen to the whole thing?
@@LilBoiPeep69 ok bud
Another fantastic season of outer banks thanks Josh!!!
I like the black shirt,
I think there are probably some middle schoolers that could beat you in a race!
I believe he is a winner if they will give home time to get used to Bama culture and the SEC.
never seen a respectful tennessee fan until now, it’s nice to meet you.
-bammer
BGSU is gonna beat Toledo by a touchdown at least
Told ya
Personally I think we need a complete reboot without the money in coaching as well as players. If people realized how much the current system is costing them in outragious cable and streaming fees alone they'd be pissed off.
Texas never looked like they were that good, they had very little competition. Idk how anyone was actually surprised by the loss….
Great point on DeBoer and Bama. I didn’t think of it that way, but makes sense why they’d need to handle with “kid gloves.”
"LSU and Clemson" lol sounds funny now. Its TAMU and Clemson after today
Josh you picked a great day to come to Nevada. This Friday is the state holiday Nevada Day.
Lynchburg, TN, Home of Jack Daniels
Home of Bill Dance, Johnny Majors and speed traps
Tell the truth Josh, the CBS suits wouldn’t let you wear the white “Mr. Clean” T-shirt would they?
Stop saying bowl games don’t matter anymore. Bowl games matter to a lot of teams.
I live behind the chevron, lol
Bama fans thought there would be no dropoff after Saban left.... This is a whole new program and there will be growing pains
Black shirtttttt
The bama nation will really be crying when Saban's WVU Mountaineers kick their ass!
