And that right there should show anyone in this comment section should take Joe Elliott for his word. Perfect situation where his voice went out and he chose to have someone else finish the show off like Jeff Keith did for him and not rely on backing tracks like everyone accuses Leppard of doing. My source is, I was at Soundcheck when we played with them as well as Styx and foreigner. I played in saliva. If Dave ever did not use tracks, it would sound empty and very bare bones, which is not the leopard style and they were amazing. By the way they were actually playing with the tracks weren’t the vocals were not the drums were not. They were all playing. The backing tracks are simply bad backing. If you heard them by themselves, you wouldn’t even recognize the song. Same with Crue Hard to believe that Nikki Sixx toured for 40 years and never figured out how to play shadow of the devil three notes that it is. Goddamn you people must wipe back to front in fact, if you’ve been to a concert past the year 1990 then you have been the audience of backing tracks every band no exception. Every major production. I’m 67 and thankfully in good health so I’m rooting for Joe Elliot who is my age. I will say this as we age our vocal range lessens and we can’t do what we once took for granted. I have no idea what is going on with Def Leppard but it seems obvious that numerous bands enhance their stage show to keep a quality level high which if you think about it is what fans want. The fans want a good show. So, if they double track vocals to make the singer sound stronger who cares? Or if they have tracks that are prerecorded playing with live tracks it seems it is happening to make a better show. Double tracking vocals is nothing knew. In the 1960’s there could be occasions where a studio singer could sing with the band singer to enhance the vocal. I don’t think band’s getting help through technology is a bad thing as long as it is to boost the performance.

I can usually tell when people use backing tracks, I have never ever noticed anything along those lines with Def Leppard. They work hard and take pride in their vocals, and this is obvious. Sometimes you can hear some rough spots as to be expected, but they usually sound amazing and very natural. Chuck Billy is probably jealous or just don’t understand how they can be so good

Audiences expecting Joe Elliot (or anyone for that matter) to sing songs in the same key and with the same gusto at age 64 as he did in his 20s, 30s and even 40s is just not realistic. The choice is either down tune songs so he can hit the notes, which sometimes sounds weird, or give some grace with the allowance of backing tracks. I choose the latter.

Def Leppard use sound effects, such as the opening robotic voice in the beginning of Love Bites. Rick Allen hits drum triggers that set off little bits of drum loops occasionally. And they play to a click track (a metronome) for timing. Sometimes they are playing along to video footage on stage, and need to be synced up to that. The click track guides that. Rick Savage plays some synth parts on foot pedals. And a few small keyboard riffs are set of from a sampler. But they are playing live, singing live, and setting off a few drum triggers and samples. They are not just fake playing.

It has been going on since the 90's, at least. For Joe to say they are 100% not using tapes, I'm sure that's true. We have been using digital and synth technology since the 90's. The synths of the 80's were automated and pre-programmed. Who uses tapes, in today's digital age? I stopped trying to convince people that we have used this tech for decades. My synths can trigger almost anything.

Man this is still a hot debate? I guess I get it but I feel like it shouldn't be anymore. Minimal backing tracks are acceptable and/or especially if your music has some sort of electronic parts. There are just some pieces of music that can't be performed any other way, period. Other than that, play your instruments and sing live. I'm a nobody but there's my humble opinion. Great coverage, great video as usual. 🤘😬

  • @Downhuman74

This shouldn't even be a controversy - Def Leppard doesn't use backing tracks and never has. Def Leppard's recent Whiskey show (which is up on their UA-cam channel) is mostly live with some of the more electronic and sampled stuff from Hysteria coming through on an obvious backing track - which is more than understandable. All of the vocals are live - including the backing vocals. Joe has taken care of his voice as well as you can when you sing like that. He sings all the high stuff in falsetto now but the reverb on his vocals makes it sound really good. And the rest of the band does amazingly with the backing vocals - it's been one of their hallmarks going back to the Pyromania days. I know they seem like a band who should be a no-brainer for using backing tracks but they don't.

Def Leppard's sound checks are better than most bands live shows. Def Leppard is a vocal band and the guys pride themselves on that fact. They spend about 45 minutes before each show just doing vocal warmups. Their behinds the scenes tour videos show how hard they work to deliver a quality show. Vivian Campbell who previously played in several high profile bands has said that Def Leppard has the best work ethic of any band he has ever been associated with. That probably goes back to Sav and Joe growing up in Sheffield.

Yep. If I'm going to a concert, I want to hear live music. I don't care if they screw it up a little bit. Or if the singer's voice cracks now and then. That makes it all real and I respect that. Lip syncing is phoning it in. I could've saved my money, stayed home and listened to my cd's. Yes, I still buy hard copies including vinyl. But, live? You better be playing and singing live. Nothing beats live music! I can live with what Joe explained. But, lip syncing is cheating. It's like taking steroids in sports. And I will mock you for it. I haven't been at a show yet where it's happened. But, if I was, I would demand a refund. I'm there to listen first and foremost. No amount of lasers, or explosions is going to make me happy if you're up there faking it. Period.

Chuck is one of the sincerest people in metal. He is very well mannered, and he was trying to make a nuanced point from the view of a fan going to concerts. I'm kind of a purest about shows and how they should be delivered, in the most natural way possible without enhancing effects. Even as I say this though, I know most drummers at shows would not sound good if their bass drums weren't triggered. So, I'd leave it up to the band to decide what kind of enhancement features they use and where they put them.

I will pay ridiculous amounts of money to see Ghost live, because Tobias Forge puts on one hell of a show. I'm absolutely sure he has to use backing tracks for some of the songs like Faith. The main vocals are real, and the Ghouls harmonize. He forgets words sometimes, or you can hear an off note in a guitar riff every now and then. The only way I have a problem is if they say it's 100% real and it's not. Just don't lie and it's all good! Providing that they still put their all into singing the main vocals.

What everyone forgets, a singers voice is literally a part of their body. Their voices evolve as they age... Singers can't change their vocal chords like a guitarist changes strings. I'm a singer who has endured the rest of the band upset with me needing a break... sorry guys, but if my voice is one, I only have 1 throat. I wouldn't expect a drummer or guitarist to play with an injury...

FACT - Leppard's backing vocals are from the band members except 'The Thunder God'. 'Mutt' Lange had a massive role in this when recording 'Pyromania' - Colllen has said it took him a long time to sing 'and' play, the late brilliant lyrical, musical and live genius of this band Steve 'The Riffmaster' Clark also sang but not as much as he just dazzled live. Why these two have made this allegation is bizarre - Vivian is arguably the bands best vocalist but ALL three sing live.
