Back in the 80's I'd read 'Helter Skelter' at night in bed, while my 2 boys and husband slept. I would get up several times to be sure the doors were locked. It was so eerie and unnerving. I could almost feel the desperation of the victims as they realized what their fates were.
I understand that feeling all to well!. I read it as a freshman in high school in 1980, for a history essay. I didn't sleep at night for a few days and after that, hated being alone at night! I was paranoid for years about dying in my own home by strangers. That book can twist you up if you let it! 😊😊😊
@@jillgross6232 It was almost too hideous to be real. Sometimes I wonder if people just didn't lock their doors, opened their doors for strangers or they broke in. I can remember as a little girl in the 50's when no one locked the doors on their homes or cars!
Gary Hinman sounded like a very good, decent man with a gentle and harmless soul. What happened to him was just horrible. I truly hope Bobby B. is *NEVER* paroled and dies in jail for what he did to Mr. Hinman. RIP.

great video! what always amazes me is that these manson family hippies constantly said they were "stoned" and high on various drugs, yet look at the roads they routinely traveled during that era...winding, difficult to find locations, many times at night, and yet they were able to navigate these rather risky areas in the canyons. Your video shows the type of roads these are. Even though they hitch hiked a lot back then, they still drove various vehicles around to these locations, including the Tate house which is also not easy to find even if they'd been there before. This is what has made me doubt their claims of being so "high" that they didn't know what they were doing. People who can traverse these types of locations in a vehicle are highly focused and know what they are doing.
Good research. I always felt sorry for Gary Hinman. He didn't have to be killed. Thanks for taking us on the ride with you. Enjoyed the song, too. You're such a good narrator. Never boring. Thanks for making this.
Chilling... The song and it's psychotic lyrics really add to it. In his book Music For Chameleons, the late Truman Capote included an interview that he did with Bobby Beausoleil. That house is beautiful, sad it was the sight of such horror. Thanks Scott. RIP Gary 🙏🌈🕊️

I am sure hundreds of cars drive past this house every day and don't know what happened there, and the significance of the murder of Gary Hinman. This house was where "Helter Skelter" truly began.
Growing up in L.A. I drove that canyon a hundred times. This proves once again that no one was ever a friend of the "family." You were either a victim, or a mark for drugs and money. God bless all of the fallen who believed otherwise.
Linda Ronstadt DID live next door to Gary Hinman at the time of his murder. In fact, the two houses were a stone's throw away and shared a mailbox stand down the hill by their driveways. Hinman at 964 and Ronstadt at 954 Old Topanga Road. Linda was away at the time ironically playing a gig in NYC called The Bitter End.
Taking this trip on Topanga canyon with you brought back memories for me 😮 My friend and I used to hitchhike from Venice to Topanga to a place that was called twin pools, it's weird how we knew exactly where to pull over and go down. The 70's were full of freedoms. Heck, parents didn't check on their kids until they were late for dinner. And I'm talking kids under 10. If you were a teenager parents just figured you were with friends. They didn't worry unless you were out past curfew! 😂😂😂😂

Can we all agree that the number of possible Manson family victims is possibly high than any of us really know. Hinman was one of the most horrific for sure! I think Manson got off on being able to tell HIS people to KILL and they would do it. Some of the most senseless crimes in history,
Thank you so much for bringing this out. This poor young man at the time didn’t get the recognition that he should have in the mess that Manson made for himself and that of others but getting back to this, Gary I think it’s so sad because nobody even bothered to check on him. I guess he didn’t have any family members or even any friends for that matter, that would make sense why he would even get mixed up in that with the kind of people that they were anyways but thank you for bringing this out, you take care and be safe.🤠

@@joenickell6323 we shall agree to disagree when it comes to Van Houten. I personally know someone that was in that house before Tate and her friends were slaughtered. He rented it with Terry Melcher. Was at the house when Melcher turned Manson down for recording Manson’s music. Person I know, all these years later, has PTSD, a virtual prisoner to his many homes. Manson’s clan has contacted him and they keep trying. Like I said, we will agree to disagree.
Wow that area looks like it ready to bust into flames. Did the sellers of the house have to disclose there was a murder there? The last bit of music was pretty cool and creepy.
In CA the real estate people only have to divulge that information for 7 years after the event. But... if you buy a house without googling the address first, well, that wouldn't be wise.
@@DearlyDepartedToursI used to work in the local history collection in a certain town. Ppl used to come in to use the resources to perform history searches for their houses. It is interesting that good old "love your brother" Charlie Manson gave the order to kill Gary Hinman over MONEY. Why did Charlie hate Terry Melcher? Because Charlie thought he thwarted his attempt to become a wealthy successful singer/songwriter. So much for Manson's disdain for the material things in life. Poor Hinman got mixed up with some very bad people. Excellent video. I had no idea it was such a long drive from Malibu. Manson sure left his mark on the L.A. area!
Thank you so much for your videos. They are so informative and the actual locations and the actual route the person took are incredible. I feel I'm going back in time, to 1969. Even though I was five years old at the time. The videos bring back the sadness and horror of the Manson murders, along with grief. I hope all the victims are somehow at peace. I've wondered if people who are murdered get a chance to reincarnate.
I was a few weeks shy of my 6th birthday at the time of the Tate/LaBianca murders, and I don’t recall it at all at the time. However, was older by the time the movie Helter Skelter was broadcast on TV, and I do remember that. I also was old enough to recall coverage of the trial in 1971 and Squeaky Fromme’s attempt on Pres Ford’s life and HER trial. However, in 1969, when the murders took place, I was too young. I don’t think my parents were really paying much attention or talking about it.
I lived in SoCal in the 1960s. I remember well the weirdness that consumed the atmosphere of the Manson Murders. I feel like Beausoliel driving to Hinman's house, and the merry band of murderers.
Thank you for always sharing and providing information. I really felt as if I was in the car making the drive e myself. I love your channel. So just take Topanga Canyon all the way?
If They HADN'T Let Manson Out Of Prison That Last Time in 1967 He Would Have Not Been Able To Build His "Family" And The Innocent Victims Would Be Alive
Crazy story almost sounds like a trial run, I was 14 years old during the murders and lived 30 miles away, it becomes part of your life story, I remember the fear everyone felt. It's a shame the way the victims were portrayed in the media calling it a "weirdo orgy" and alluding that they somehow deserved it for their lifestyle choices. I dont know how much more can be learned but Scott does a great job, so much we will never know for sure. If those audio tapes from Tex Watson are ever found we may learn more.still after over 50 years it is still very sad.
Interesting drive up from Malibu. That entire area is a tinderbox. I wish the seller all the luck on unloading it and I even more so wish the buyers luck in paying the annual Fire policy on that property.
I enjoyed the drive. I miss California…😢 Would love to see a post on Shorty Shea, and Van Houten’s attorney (Ronald something?). Two other forgotten victims of the Manson gang.
Love it, looks like there used to be a wooden staircase in the center of the yard from the street. I've been to Gary's grave, right next to his mom at Rosebud Cemetary in Glenwood Springs, CO. I think they were from Grand Junction originally? GWS is where Doc Holiday lived and died of TB back in the 1800s. Cool old westy town with hotsprings. Ted Bundy escaped from the jail there as well, went on to kill 4 more people, yikes
Wait, did you turn off main Topanga to old Topanga? I am remembering this wrong. You learn something every day. I am going todo a drive by tomorrow…. Thanks for this.
My thinking is that Hinman didn't "burn" Beausoleil on the deal (intentionally or otherwise) because he probably knew enough about Charlie and his followers to not cross them. I think the Manson freaks were just desperate for cash.
It doesn’t make sense or add up to me that Hinman deliberately tried to “rob” via a bad drug deal or deliberately “cheat” Bobby B. Whether Bobby was a “family” member, was was known to be associated with Manson’s crew. It doesn’t make sense. Hinman tested them as friends and was kind to them. It doesn’t make sense that he would deliberately try to cheat them.
Lovely Cali. The winding road with the hills are pretty much similar to a road trip in New Zealand. As for GH, I knew very little, and with Steve Parent, should not be forgotten victims of Charlie and his motley crew.
5:12. Another fascinating upload. Just one note, there is not 'a Buddhist chant' there are many. We don't know what path Mr. Hinman was following, although I read somewhere that his parents were going to take him or pay for him to go to to India.

@@joenickell6323 Agree. I'll leave all of the judgement to a higher power.
You have a very nice voiceover voice.
Really love your channel!
Thank you Scott!
Often the staff (myself included) would enter the person’s home address (of the house being researched) into search box for the Proquest online local newspaper to see if the house was mentioned in the news 🗞️.
luv the drive thru Topanga Canyon, I learned so much from your documentaries Scott 👍🏻 excellent
Thank you so much for these
I’m from Australia so it’s interesting to see the different places ❤
It looks totally different now. Thanks for the journey.
Thanks for the upload. I think this is the first time I seen it. Keep the uploads coming. Love and light from Gore, Oklahoma.♥️🕯️
Hi Scott, have you seen Hollywood Graveyards latest video detailing the vault of the Chapel of the Pines? They managed to locate some Hollywood stars located there and have them reinterred where they can be now seen, its a great watch👍
Yes I have and you're right. It's brilliant!
Everything that Mr. Dark puts out is brilliant.
Like all or most Cali properties, murder homes or not; the revisions and prices are extraordinary from what they were in 1969.
Ain't that the truth. I wish that we could go back to to those prices. For sure.
Please don't call California "Cali."
@@TheHarryleemartin Ha ha, got it.
Thank you, Scott. Love your presentation. And the silence was deafening. Great work.
The drive is so cool-probably looks the same in many ways. Creepy and hypnotizing. Thank you for posting.
If I ever leave so California, I'll watch your driving videos out of nostalgia.
Love all your content Scott!
Great vlog, Scott! I thought I knew everything about this crime but didn't know that about Linda Ronstadt. I have a feeling most in both Topanga and Laurel Canyon knew about them too.
Thanks for Sharing! Excellent videos as always!
Even thought this video is based on a tragic story I enjoyed the drive down Topanga Cyn. Brought back memories for me from the late 60's through the mid 80's. I also enjoyed the music choice for the ride. Thank you for sharing, and God rest souls of all the victims in this tragic happening.
I really like your channel. I bought your 6 degrees documentary. Very chilling, the creepiest part is when you go out to barker ranch. It would be cool if you did one on shorty shea
I always enjoy your videos, especially when it comes to the Hinman/Tate/LaBianca murders. Great job, Scott!
Manson sure left his mark on the L.A. area!
Very interesting. Its important part of history.Has anyone wrote a book on Gary?
It most definitely has a spooky creepy feel to it 😮.
Luckily, Linda was in NYC singing at the Bottom Line when it happened. Great presentation!!!
IKR? Whew! Good thing she wasn’t at home!
Another great video. I feel so lucky to have been able to visit Gary's house on a tour with Scott, who is THE Manson Murders guru, y'all.
Pretty sad what henman went through. 5 days wow , stitched up with dental floss. No one deserves that. So sorry to all the victims
That Hinman court exhibit mannequin scares the living crap outta me.
Another great vid, love the way you do abit of chatting and info etc and then just music and visuals.. loving this channel 👍🇬🇧
Love the hard work thank you!
This case is a bottomless pit of fascination for me. I was 4 when this all went down and I remember my parents watching the news - and this it began 🤪
Never fails. This pops up. I'm down the hole. 😂😂😂😂as always. Great Stuff!!! Thx🎉🎉🎉
I lived in SoCal in the 1960s. I remember well the weirdness that consumed the atmosphere of the Manson Murders. I feel like Beausoliel driving to Hinman's house, and the merry band of murderers.
Thanks for another great video Scott
These crimes never should have happened rip to all the victims prayers for the family and friends of the victims
Interesting story thanks for sharing.
Awesome video Scott. Thank you ✌️
One of your best videos yet, thanks Scott
Thank you for always sharing and providing information. I really felt as if I was in the car making the drive e myself. I love your channel. So just take Topanga Canyon all the way?
Excellent video as always ❤ much appreciated ❤️🙏
If They HADN'T Let Manson Out Of Prison That Last Time in 1967 He Would Have Not Been Able To Build His "Family" And The Innocent Victims Would Be Alive
The drive was awesome. They just built around the old house. Thanks for sharing
👻a haunted canyon for sure, i can juz imagine how many dead bodies and weapons are hidden in all that shrubbery😱
You are Scott great at what you do
That was a very eerie drive 😮
Imagine driving it at night 😖
Interesting drive up from Malibu. That entire area is a tinderbox. I wish the seller all the luck on unloading it and I even more so wish the buyers luck in paying the annual Fire policy on that property.
None of these people can live in a simple house with character, they always have to blow it up into a McMansion.
These video drives are so interesting
I would NEVER buy that house! EVER!!
Wait, did you turn off main Topanga to old Topanga? I am remembering this wrong. You learn something every day. I am going todo a drive by tomorrow…. Thanks for this.
Great pick in music for the drive, going from 1960's Mansonesque to the Shining.
I bet that place is haunted. I wouldn’t want to live there by myself. 😳
Me either.
I eat a lot of fiber rich foods so i spend a lot of time on the crap tub.
Likely the Straight Satan's figured they could intimidate Bobby and get the already used drugs for free.
Lovely Cali. The winding road with the hills are pretty much similar to a road trip in New Zealand. As for GH, I knew very little, and with Steve Parent, should not be forgotten victims of Charlie and his motley crew.
Love your videos🎉🎉 Also R.I.P. PEE WEE HERMAN😢(Paul Reubens)
5:12. Another fascinating upload. Just one note, there is not 'a Buddhist chant' there are many. We don't know what path Mr. Hinman was following, although I read somewhere that his parents were going to take him or pay for him to go to to India.
