Mustaine is an amazing guitarist. Hands down the man who I garnered a lot of my metal style from. But his leadwork... kinda one dimensional. His phrasing is very boxy and stiff. He ends too many of his solos high e bending to that 24th fret. I love his Wake Up Dead solo. Sweating Bullets is cool. A Secret Place. The man can jam... he likes what he likes. Now, Marty's solos.... okay, now we're talking. That man can phrase like no other. Fun vid, dude. Look forward to more.

Not to mention some of the licks he pulled off in the first albums were really unconventional and very twisted, yet he was always able to replicate and repeat them

Glen drover or chris broderick (I forget who wrote the solo) has a harder one in that song, dave is just kinda playing the same lick a couple times on his. The lick where dave uses his thumb to reach the higher frets is pretty hard tho
Ya'll gonna hate me for this, but lead wise he plays very similar to Kirk Hammett. He is indeed a better overall player than Kirk but they both are essentially fast, agressive minor pentatonic guys.

In fact, when they recorded Kill em all, Hemmit was told to play all the solos just as mustaine had. Get a clue.
He has 2 main tricks. Wanking around on the 12th fret a shifting a pattern up the fretboard chromatically. But he did some good stuff on the earlier albums. Hes not a great lead player though

Lmao he is 100x better than Kirk. Mustaine played most of the solos in Killing is my business, Peace Sells and So far so good. It was not until Marty who clearly is a better soloist that gave him the spot. But Mustaine was never really about the solos, but his master riffs. He composed 40% of Kill em all, 20% on Ride the Lighting and influced every guitar player in the early thrash scene, including Kerry King. No Mustaine, no thrash nor Metallica as we know it. Kirk could never compose to save his life. Ask Kirk to play Poison was the cure riff while singing at the same time. Kirk is overrated af, the only thing that he does better than Mustaine is playing with more feel. Other than that he is a wah pedal abuser.
