It's also really dumb...because star fleet has no problem accommodating some absolutely ridiculous customs of alien species throughout the show. The idea that the bijorian people wouldn't properly introduce themselves via their own custom is beyond silly. If it's something forced on them by the kardassians then that would be something they would have abandoned immediately.
Also it's kind of stupid in the context of how language works. So when I'm giving you an order I'm using your first name that could easily be confused with other people who have that same first name. Rather than the family name that would be unlikely to be replicated unless you are serving with family members. But when I'm talking to you on a personal level I'm using the family name that could easily cause my remarks to be confused with other members of your family that I also know...Think about what it would be like telling your girlfriend something when you have to use the same name used for her mother...
It's this sort of out of place writing that makes me think, this isn't a story beat as much as it is a lecture in disguise.

@@TheNitroG1 Wrong. I've worked with more than one guy from a country where surnames come first who's just accepted the inversion of his name rather than correct people about it, and people who had guts enough to do so. • @Swindle1984

@@TheNitroG1 Quite a few cultures, such as Japan, address people by their family name unless they're very familiar with one another. Many of these people assimilate into cultures that do it the other way around when they immigrate. It makes perfect sense that many Bajorans, who at this point were primarily refugees, would adopt a "when in Rome" attitude to make themselves relatable to the people they were trying to curry favor from, particularly when the Cardassians had been suppressing Bajoran culture and traditions for decades already and many of them didn't grow up with those traditions. The ones who did, like Ro, were the ones who obstinately stuck to their old ways mainly to spite the Cardassians and reclaim some of their identity. Notice Ro wears her earring on the left ear, not the right, indicating she isn't religious/doesn't believe in the Prophets but does wish to honor Bajoran tradition and culture.

Discovery started with the main character doing mutiny, and then having to start her way up again on a new ship where everybody distrusted her, and gain their trust again. Saru went from fearful, by the book science officer / XO to confident empathetic captain. Tilly also grew in confidence. Hugh died, and came back, and had to navigate that as well. Georgiou went from evil empress of the mirror universe to embracing at least SOME of the values of the Federation, to the point that when she had an opportunity to go back, she found that she couldn't live there anymore, she changed too much.

I think Picard mentioned reading about ancient Bajoran civilizations in his fifth-grade reader. But if you think about what you might’ve learned about other civilizations at that age, it would probably be the biggest of “big picture” stuff. Maybe something similar to an American kid excited to learn about the existence of the Great Wall of China-like, say, knowing something vague about ancient Bajorans using lightships for some of the earliest interstellar voyages on record. It’s neat, and it might even pique a particularly curious kid’s interest in learning more. But it’s not anywhere near the level of detail for recognizing different name customs.
But *after* this episode, Picard takes more interest in Bajorans and seems to make a concerted effort to learn things he didn’t know. Knowing him, I’m sure it was half out of respect and diplomatic interest-wanting to make sure he didn’t insult Bajorans by missing similar things in future dealings-and half out of Picard simply never wanting to remain ignorant about something once he knows he doesn’t know it yet!

Its only because Nana Visitor was so good as Kira that I can stand Forbes turning down Ro being the Bajoran on DS9.

Yes - well on Ro anyway.
Completely incomprehensible to me, and even kind of embarrassing, as she was not that fanciable.
      And yet she also was...
      big time

That's the origin of 'amnesiac stricken crew member' part in the "Will Riker: Horniest First Officer in Starfleet" line in the 'TNG: Honest Trailers' video.

This is why i wasnt really surprised when she betrayed them. She was nice to some people, but she had a goal and got what she needed so.

I think Picard knew the stakes but used her for Intelligence anyway. He did try to help her and felt betrayed, but the Intelligence was too valuable to pass up.

Michelle Forbes is Mexican by nationality and every once in a while she will use body language that conveys a kind of chola-esque manner for that time in her life.
