Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.
I am sailing Tarka around the world to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here:
www.theadventur...
or visit their website directly:

If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to:

Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from donations by:
Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages
Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection

“NO SAILING EXPERIENCE”!!! OMG!!! I would be scared senseless!! It’s refreshing to see someone jumping in headfirst into the life they dream of. Much respect
This channel is prime. Refreshing to see a small boat.
Love it.....i not knocking them , but there are sooooo many "sponsored" or well off sailors out there, its nice to see a "real " deal
Fun video, thanks for showing...
Man I love the low budget videos people out there on a small boat with a little budget no offense to the other sailing channels but I don’t even watch them at all anymore I’ve bought a Cabo rico in Texas and I’m putting a brand knew mast in it getting it refit paint offshore crap you im going to follow your path down to South America I watched the videos for a few years looked at sailboats all night long studied books so I will see you out there somewhere cheers Ocean cowboy is my boats name from Texas
Sounds great! I just met a guy who sailed all the way down here (Bonaire) from Texas on a 20ft boat!
Your light use of music is appreciated...let nature tell the tale...
I agree, and when I have acceptable audio on the video clips, I use it. With GoPro footage though, this isn't often the case, so either music has to be added, or I have to keep talking.
When do you expect to be in the Pacific?
I have to be careful answering that question, because if I answered it last year, I would have said I'd be half way across right now! But the plan right now is to be somewhere amongst the South Pacific islands by this time next year.
I totally give you mad props for this channel! I just did something similar about three months ago when I moved onto a small (admittedly slightly larger than yours at 32 ft) sailboat in the Pacific Northwest but feel an incredible sense of accomplishment after my first couple hundred miles. I've learned a ton about boat life and myself. It's an amazing adventure! Thanks for sharing your trip.

This makes me happy to see a youth on a small boat cruising the EC .
I really like the live commentary much more than the voice over! Do more of that!
Sailing alone, it always felt strange to do live commentary like most other sailing channels, so I did very little of it. I do more and more of it these days, but it'll be a while before the videos catch up to real-time, and I can't change the footage I have from the past, so, for better or worse, it'll be a little while before that changes.
Am enjoying your videos - live vicariously through your adventures. Keep On!
Looking forward to the maintenance videos as well. I hope the maintenance list doesn't get to long. Fair winds and Full sails.
I’m only 4 mins in to watching this and all ready mate Iv got so much respect for you. Quitting your job and setting of singlehanded to sail the world. pick up folks along the way and just live a good happy life doing what you want to do & go where you want to go big respect buddy. That day will come for me to when I can go sailing ⛵️ good luck and have a good time as we only get one life so live free & keep safe be happy an be respectful to all who cross your path or should I say anchor fair wind 💨💨⛵️🌊🌊⛵️🌴🏖
Thanks man. It's a big step at first, but after that, it's just a bunch of little steps.
The Adventures of Tarka ye I need to just get up and leave but still have that fear. Iv give myself one year two at the most. Love your channel it’s nice to see that there are people like me out there. Singlehanded sailor
Congrats on 500 mile mark!! Another great video, well done and as they say " the school of hard knocks is the best education" so dont beat youraelf up to bad about your mistakes. Great job!
My draw to your channel is the fact that you are on a small boat. I have a Hunter 26 (my first sailboat), and just recently completed a 200-mile round trip of the Puget Sound. I also learned a ton during that sail. Hoping next year to add some miles to it and get up into the San Juans. Again, great channel!!!!

Great video! My family are from Grenada and I see you passed Gouyave. My grandmother would have seen your boat from her porch! :D Hope you enjoyed yourself. You should try the Nutmeg bar overlooking the Carenage. Truly lovely. Well done on your endeavours. Cannot be easy sailing, filming and living, all under your own steam. Cheers to you for following your dream!
Thanks for another refreshing and entertaining video!
Never hurts to have a few swedish chicks around too!
Cheers 🍻
Awesome can’t wait for more videos. Keep sailing ⛵️
Hey man, love getting your videos. Appreciate the fact that your doing it solo. Most Channels are couples so seeing this is refreshing. I also appreciate your video style.. keep it up.. I’ll be following you!
Thanks! Filming is a lot harder when you're by yourself, but I'm glad it sets me apart from the crowd :).
This channel really does remind me of early Delos.
Stop it, you're making me blush.
You're the man Bryan!! Can't wait to see where you go next!
Cool bro great job just doing it!!!👍👍🤙
Tistan Jones sailed thousands and thousands of miles in a small boat with nothing but charts and a sextant. It can be done. But it is riskier than in a larger, heavier boat. Best of luck to you!
Indeed! There are many people that have done far more adventurous things than I, with far less to aid them. The way I'm doing it, in the age of GPS and global communication is like easy-mode compared to what they did.
Great video :)
nice video
love the channel, man!
Just wanted to say that your style in making these video's is wonderful and so very refreshing to see... I also like that you are truly sailing solo and seem to enjoy the experience very much and as you said in the video, you are only alone on the passage.. and seem to find lots of friends along the way. So I was wondering how do you handle the longer sail with sleeping.... I am curious about that... and Fair Winds to you. I will see you out there somewhere...

Beautiful show! I have watched many if these, but many are not worth following..keep it up! Make the videos 15min and up😉
Great work.
Good vid bro.
Love the drone footage :-)
great video lad cheers to ur great adventure youth holds no bounders
Great achievements Congrats.
Hey I am from there you did a great job....😆
Step by step you become a pro efficient sailor, congratulations,God bless you abundantly.
Good video techniques. You must have a strong computer background. I am learning from you.
I subscribed after checking your home site here. I saw your favorites and thought I should suggest 'WhiteSpotPirates'. It may provide you with some idea of how these dreams become reality; hard work with incredible rewards. I'm coming along from Episode 1. Good luck and fair winds, sailor!
Hey Ron, thanks for the sub and the recommendation! I know WhiteSpotPirates very well, and followed her journey for a while before I bought Tarka, but I haven't followed since I moved aboard. I should check up them, I wonder if there's any chance of us crossing paths!
When watching the Intro and Episode 1, I noticed the time-lag. By that I assumed you had done all your research and practiced the modes of best delivery within your power. Secondly I realized you may already know anything I could offer, and redundancy is a simple-minded friend. So just grin and accept the success as it comes. You have done a fine job with no cause to feel otherwise. Enjoy your community!
Haha, no. I just never had time to sit down and edit video, really. There's a lot I don't know, and I'm learning every day. Just today, I was working on the engine and realized I made a very dumb mistake ~6 months ago that I get to pay for now. So, words of wisdom will always be appreciated.
Wisdom? It is always better to kick your own butt than have some other cheek involved. Wisdom?
what kind of boat are Mike and Megan on? love the videos keep them coming
They're on a Vagabond 47. Great boat.
I'm looking to do the same but all I hear is you need an offshore designed boat above 34ft and spend a fortune in prepare and maintenance. Also all I hear is that you must be a well experienced sailor before you can consider crossing Atlantic or Pacific and a small boat is a disaster waiting to happen in rough seas. Are you the exception or am I listening to people who are super cautious. My potential budget has dropped in line with the stock market but my dreams and ambitions remain the same. I finished RYA Navigation and Boat Theory so am impressed that you could skip that knowledge and go straight to sailing, not talking about it. In short what are pros and cons of boat under 30ft from your experience so far?
27” is the ideal boat size.
Well I certainly think so!
I agree. I have a py26 paceship perfect for all around solo sailing

Where did you get that mapping AnimeMaker app? Great video.
I use Adobe AfterEffects to make my maps, but that's mostly because I use an Adobe CC license, and it comes with it. It's a very powerful tool, and I would say it's a bit overkill if you just want to make animated maps.
The Adventures of Tarka Thanks so much.
Will you always tow the dinghy, or are you planning on stowing it for the Pacific?
Dinghy normally isn't towed, but it was being towed on this short passage because the weather was good.
😀👍
How many miles can you do in a 24 hour period
Depends on the wind, waves, and current of course, but if I'm not surfing down waves, then the boat, because of displacement-hull physics, will max out at about 6kts, so that would be a 144nm day, but I don't often average 6kts. 5kts is typical for me, so 120nm. Anything around 5kts makes me happy. When I'm below 4 is when I star trying to see what I can tweak to make things faster.
I really hate you. You have way too much hair. It is really great to watch you (and the girls) have fun.
I miss that area and can't wait to get back !!! Great job
Y'all sailing channels kill me. What is the vessel make and model?
HULK LOVE CHANNEL HULK SNASH BUTTON!!!
Granada, which was unfairly invaded by the US, the freak country
Why do you tow your dingy all the time . You said that Tarka was a slow boat your dingy will knock one knot of speed off.
I don't tow it unless I'm making a short trip, like in this case, moving a few miles up the coast.
