It's not bonkers. An MDX Advance from 15 years ago is $73k adjusted for inflation. The MDX is also the best selling 3 row luxury SUV, ever. That Explorer isn't as comfortable, or handle nearly as well. Aside from horsepower an Explorer isn't even in the same neighborhood.
@@dmanatan All the best luxury and sports vehicles are RWD based just like the Explorer. It just has a totally differewnt feel then a FWD biased SUV that's ultimately based on the Accord. The MDX is rediculously slow for such a small SUV. and heavy too.

The driving feel and quality is way better than the ST. My brother just picked one up and even my base MDX feels way better. The explorer is the same weight as the type S and the MDX feels like a larger sedan where the ST feels like a boat. The type S is more refined, has brembos and air suspension. If I were in the market for one of these things, that $77k is tough. But a few years later as a used car it seems like a great option for half that price.
Per their own reporting, Type-S models only account for ~10% of total MDX sales, this isn't their bread and butter. Regardless if you proportionately option out an X5 and GLE, there's a notable price disparity (IMHO). Factor in Acura's reliability history vs. the Germans along with average cost of ownership, and the Acura offers a compelling value for those who don't place as much value on brand cache. Sure the B58 is awesome, but past experience with Germans has me more concerned about what could go wrong INSIDE the cabin... Also, nobody who buys one is going to pay $77k sticker, that MIGHT be the OtD price. Anecdotally that's already the case.
Greetings from Austria, I don‘t get the American demand for >300hp engines with those low speed limits everywhere in the US. Put 220hp in that family SUV and drop the price. Clear me up, please.
for one thing it weighs 6,000 lbs (with 5 people and gear). For another although speed limits are lower here people speed a LOT more than in Europe. You can also buy a regular MDX with 270hp instead..but 220hp would be glacial, pushing 10 seconds 0-60, which isn't what luxury buyers are looking for
The speed limit in some US states is higher than it is in Austria. Also, unlike Austria, we in the US don't have radar boxes on highways and the speed limits on interstate are not as strictly enforced as they are in Austria. Driving 100 + mph on US interstates got me fewer speeding tickets in the past than speeding tickets I got on my trips to Austria when exceeding 160km/h on an Autobahn. And of course - we just like to accelerate fast and have passing power readily available that you won't get with your typical European 2.0 liter diesel engine.
