In the video, Stephen Bishop said they used the "I gave my love a cherry" song because they did not want to pay any royalties. The people in charge of "Perry Mason" had the same idea. They had Paul Carr (in the role of Con Bolton) singing that same song in "The Case of the Tandem Target" which first aired on May 14 1964. It seems appropriate because the time period of "Animal House" was suppose to be in the early 1960's.
Stephen Bishop!! Thank you for all of the years of creativity you have given us. I was in 7th grade when I saw Animal House for the first of many many times! I am looking forward to many more years, of new music and material from YOU!!!!!!
Answers to questions everyone asks. Yes, I still have the smashed guitar. Yes, John really did smash that guitar over my head, I knew it was coming, but it was terrifying nonetheless. We only did this scene in two takes. No, this scene was not originally in the script. “I Gave My Love A Cherry” or “The Riddle Song” is a 15th Century English folk song. We used it as it was public domain, so there were no licensing fees. Yes, that really is me, they had me shave my beard, and John Landis’ wife, Deborah, pinned my long hair back to make it short. The guitar was a cheap classical, but I insisted it be in tune for the scene.
I think I've only seen the movie once and "mis-remembered" that he took the guitar and whomped Bishop over the head with it. I do recall Bish saying he kept the guitar remnants for years afterward. Makes total sense.
Thanks Stephen for this video. I watch the movie recently and found it very entertaining even though occasionally wild and somewhat exaggerated (not they could not get away with that....). Please keep on posting more videos. What about the other songs in the movie? Those were top hits !!!
I know many guitar players are very loyal to their prized guitar. That's OK. But ,if you pull one out on an airliner and start playing ,I will play this scene before as a warning . Let's not test each other...ok ?
Great backstory- thanks!

I remember you showing it on VH1's 'Where Are They Now?'. It was autographed by the cast. Cool memento.
Do you have all the pieces, Steven, or just the neck he handed back to you?
Awesome movie and great memories. Glad you were in it. That scene was classic Belushi. He left us way too soon
😆 Thanks for sharing Stephen cool !
That was fun. Thanks. Yes, do more.

Such a classic movie ☮️💜
my favorite scene. I remember listening to a very Young Donny Osmond singing different lyrics to that same song, called "The Twelfth of Never".
