  • NB! I wanted to publish this video yesterday but it took forever for UA-cam to process the HD and 4K versions. On Friday, I'm leaving for Portugal to cross the Atlantic aboard Fiona. In this video, I go over some of the stuff and gadgets I'll bring along.

    Hi Mads,
Have an excellent trip. I crossed the Atlantic 5 years ago aboard the Norwegian tall ship "Sørlandet" - it was a phenomenal trip. I was aboard for 4 months. Have an amazing trip.

Hello BS, I guess it really depends on the type of dog you have. My dog will adjust to almost any condition just to supervise me. (Ha, She's a herding dog) I do highly recommend a book called "How to be your dog's best friend" , and although Caesar's (Dog Whisperer) mostly an entertainer, he has some great advise... Good luck!

Good luck Mads! and fair winds as they say! excited for you too. Regarding the gas canister, I've flown with my PFD on numerous occasions without it cause security issues. Only once was I asked to remove it ( gas canister) ..... sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission if you get my drift! Really looking forward to your first broadcast from Fiona 👍⛵🍻

CO2 cartridges are allowed in the US by the TSA. you must have them with the life jacket and you are allowed two, one in the unit the other a spare. It's not a bad idea to print out the TSA specification on it since I have been challenged on the rule before when traveling back into the US. luckily I had the print out with me!

Hi Mads, a belated Happy Birthday and thank you for the personal call out in the video description (NB😀👍). I can really empathise with how you are feeling right now - a whole range of excitement and apprehension... It is good to have a tangible task like sorting out the kit that you are going to take. I am surprised you are taking the laptop - could you not make do with the iPad, a card reader and iMovie just for the trip? Saves a fair bit of weight and vulnerability. Are you taking a chart set for Navionics?
Enough, already. Have a great trip - I am sure you will be one of Eric's all time fave crew members of all times. (I note he has not updated his website since return to US). Really look forward to catching up with the chronicled adventure.👍😀
    Bon voyage.✈️⚓️⛵️🏝🏖🌄🏁🛬⚓️

Very fair winds and following seas! Let's see...Knife, drugs, lithium batteries, compressed gas cartridge. This should be entertaining at the airport? The patch you are wearing can be moved to thicker skin, say on the back to slow the absorption if you do have dry mouth etc. I cut mine in half (carefully). What is a buff? Luck to you!!!!

Hey Mads Happy Birthday, first time posting on your videos despite having seen most of them and travelled through all links posted. I guess that makes me a Fan :). Is the Westsail 42 Fiona the same boat that Drake Paragon sailed from Ireland to Portugal around 4 years ago? I remember seeing those videos back then ua-cam.com/video/AYsiewUqB50/v-deo.html Regarding your Kit, it all seems very well thought. I would perhaps suggest another head torch for redundancy and a hand torch with more power (pointing at mast head), a Leatherman multitool and a proper sailing folding knife (no sharp point tip). I would also suggest talcum powder, a second set of sunglasses, clothes travel wash... and that's it. Here is my kit preparation for my Atlantic crossing on the first Leg of the Clipper Round the World race 2015/16 last August. Enjoy and Fair winds. ua-cam.com/video/aCeINu-Bkc0/v-deo.html

    Happy B'Day Mads !
Looks like you might have put a little thought into preparing for your trip ! LOL
I'm getting a little nervous and excited and I'm not even the one going !!! :-) :-) :-)
I hope you can get your Iron Sail reinstalled before you leave so when you get back you and Yokull can just relax and catch up without any projects pending.
Maybe you can get your parents to walk around and talk to the camera so he will think that it IS just normal behavior what you have been doing all of this time ! LOL

    Comments on your gear:
    - bring extra sun glasses as you re likely to loose / break one
-bring wet wipes for quick wash as water is scarce
    - think about warm hat at extra layers for night time on helm
    - more sun cream and hydrating lotion for your skin
    - ear plugs, for quite nap on squeaky moving boat
    Enjoy!

After all the preparation it's sad you had to cut the trip short, 700nm is still an impressive distance, hopefully you're not disheartened.
Following you by inreach was good and I was looking forward to seeing you go the distance. I think you're going to have to build up to it though, seas first, then oceans.

    Mads,
    Have a great time.
I have done 8 Atlantic crossings delivering boats and although I do not normally suffer from seasickness I always begin the crossing by taking anti-seasick drugs for the first couple of days (you could go with your patches if they suit you better). It means I have one less thing to worry about when leaving and really, if you get seasick, the pills do not really work as a cure and might get thrown back up when taken! The pills or patches should be viewed as preventative.
I usually start taking a dose roughly 18 hours before leaving to help settle in and get the body ready. I know that nobody wants to take drugs that are not needed but, to really be effective, you need to get the protection in early!
If I am honest, I think your 10 t-shirts to 2 pairs of shorts is a bit out of whack... way too many shirts!
We saw the PFD but no tether? Spinlock recommend the loop one end and clip the other type that is cow-hitched to the PFD, but you have everything else so I guess you must have a tether as well. Most sailors I know carry their PFD in the hold luggage with the arming device connected... yep, I am sure it is not what they are supposed to do but they do, they never have a problem...
Knife with lanyard? In the hold bag is okay.
FWIW, I avoid coffee and save it for when I really need to be spiked awake... regular naps when off watch will mean you will not need caffeine anyway.
Finally, you will also need some chilli sauce because the food can need a bit of vavoom at times!
Hold on and have a great trip!
    Ian

The re-hydration salts is also good for hang overs!....tried and tested to many times! You can also buy these wrist bands which have little buttons inside. somehow they work against sea sickness...
You should stay out where ever you sail to. The silk liner is good to stop bed bugs. I got a cotton one and its rubbish. I'm in Sri Lanka at the moment get bitten over and over again. Just brought some citronella oil spray. seems to of gotten ridden of the ants from my bed. (I go on a budget about 10 euro a night for a place)
Dont forget to take some wine.....common curtsy and all that ;-)

Great adventure coming, soo wonderful. :) A few recommendations if you don't mind. If it gets too heavy, why not leave the bigger headphones home and only use the small ones. And when I've been out in the woods for a longer periods of time, my choice for underwear is always long johns or boxer shorts and t-shirt with long or short sleeves made out of Merino wool. You can use them in cold or moderately warm environment and they don't start to smell bad for weeks. They kind of clean themselves when hang out in fresh air.

    First and foremost bon voyage!
As for your question about the air canister for the PFD, airliner PFD's that're kept in case of a water landing use similar kind of canisters, so it should not create a problem. Plus, the cabin is usually pressurized equal to 5000/6000 feet, so you should check the canister's ideal working atmospheric pressures instead.
In addition to the vast list, can I make a few suggestions? A touch screen compatible dry bag/case for ipad/iphone, plenty of silica packs for moisture protection for the electronics (condensation will be a bigger problem than leaks), several backup dead cats&kittens (they drop, fly away with wind or just disappear because they feel like it you know) and last but not least, a solar charger for the portables just in case.
Well, a good e-reader is also a must...
Enjoy your trip and have safe seas all along the way!

Don't worry about flying with your PFD, Ive never had any problems with a inflating life jacket, infact the CAA says you can carry one without informing the captain (airline) and up to two extra cartridges, the only thing I normally do is separate the cartridge from the trigger mechanism to avoid accidental inflation. Also I would take ALOT more sunscreen!! The sun is fierce in the tropics!

Mads, I want to wish you a very safe trip. In a way we will all be with you on your crossing. I have told you in the past that I was looking to buy my first sailboat. Well, a Cascade 27 Sloop with a very heavy duty trailer fell into my lap. I plan to video my refit and learning to sail it . I have been interested in sailing for a few decades but just never took the steps to make the dream a reality. You guys and gals that I have watched on You Tube have inspired me to take those steps. At 60 , my dream of sailing waters both near and far are getting closer. Hug Jokull for me ( I just lost my friend ) , and before you go. Thank you for the inspiration, and you have done a very fine job of your refit and your videos. I enjoy watching and learning ! Fair Winds, David:

Mads happy Birthday and thanks for entertaining with your videos so far. I am somehow jealous on your wonderful opportunity of crossing the atlanic....on the other hand they spoke of waves of 10 m height in the news....So I will switch to mapshare to follow you and wish you all the best...Hope to hear from you soon...Best Regards Denis

Happy Bday! Haha cotton liner nice. What about some sort of antifungal and/or antibacterial cream? I know where does it end. Neck strap for glasses so they don't fall in the drink? FAQ: What make & model is that magic blue jacket!? #LOL #BestRubberBootsEver #BonVoyage #FairWinds

Hi Mads, I recently flew Gatwick to Portugal for a delivery Porto to Cowes and we had PFD's in hand luggage with canisters. We did get pulled aside in the xray check but we were allowed to carry them onboard. Other airports may be different but you may be okay. I would expect the cannister and PFD to be fine if in hold luggage but I would tend to unscrew the canister and have it loose in the bag. Hope that helps. Andy

Check the customs rules for each country you plan to visit. At least one of those drugs might be OTC in some countries and considered narcotics in others. In the USA, you are OK as long as its for personal use (90 day max) and you have a prescription or DR. reference/contact info.

Have a great adventure! Don't forget a good back brace and cold/hot packs and some Icy Hot for that back of yours. Maintain good hydration and stretch as often as possible. Your legs are your shock absorbers. Looking forward to your videos of "The Crossing".

    Have a safe trip!
I have been watching all your videos (all videos playlist, kudos for creating it, very helpful), it is amazing to see your transition into the boat, all the building videos etc. And also how the production has improved over time. A lot of fun, and it helps smoothing my longing for the next sailing season.
Once again. Have a safe trip, with good winds and loads of fun!

I had one of those nights where something suddenly gets remembered!
In addition to the other post I made...
In your packing I think we only saw cotton shirts and cotton-mix underwear! These will be fine when the trades blow nicely and it stays dry but they are terrible under your foul weather gear at any time...
The problem is they do not dry under other garments and will stay damp and chill your body. Modern clothes technology has moved on so your are going to need a couple of the man-made breathable fabric t-shirts and underwear to breathe under foulies.
If you wear any natural fibre under your foulies they will 'undo' all the breathing qualities of that expensive kit.
With the right undergarments you can actually dry wet clothes while wearing them - very clever but absolutely freezing if you get this bit wrong!
I have long legged (in the UK Long-Johns) underwear that is light and very warm. They also work well under shorts when the air is just too chilly for shorts but does not warrant trousers. This is often the case because on many big boats shoes are avoided to ease wear on the decks and below - so we are bare-foot long before the foulies are finished with and that gets chilly quickly in the evening!
I have banged on for long enough... You will have a fabulous time!

Hi Mads, good luck with your travels! Hope that head torch has a red light mode, benefit being it doesn't affect your night vision! An idea for a video on your return - a possible 'show and tell' of all of the tools you've used throughout your time of ownership? Might even be a chance for a good sort out, tools always get untidy :)
    Happy Sailing

Best wishes for your voyage. It appears to me that Jokull realized why you are packing about 4:26. He seems very loyal. I would like to know the brands of your foul weather gear including the jacket if you have a moment. Should be a great adventure with a great Captain and boat. Fair winds.

May this coming year be filled with unexpected blessings, and may you have a wonderful and safe voyage and return. Going for 8 weeks without seeing any of your videos is going to put me into sailing vlog withdrawals, but I know that when you get back, there will be some awesome footage from a salty sailor in the making.
    Bon voyage Mads!

    hey mads,
get some dehumidifieing granule for your electronics. it´s very helpfull if humidity is high - just put some of it in the waterproof bags together with your electronics. was very helpfull in the past when I was filming in rainy weather ;)
    have a great trip!
