Mads..the rolls Royce sea sick tablets is called Stugeron. Take 2 tables the night before you sail. This acts as a loading dose. Take one tablet the following morning with breakfast and 1 tablet every eight hours thereafter whilst sailing. I have never been seasick since discovering stugeron. Great videos ..love the projects and am learning stacks.
Mads, it must be tough. I really feel for you brother. I see the disappointment in your face. How bad were the conditions? Not sure I'd be up for a winter crossing. At least in the summer you can stay on deck and not hang out below where most people have a tendency to get sick. You're still very inspirational to us Mads. Get well soon and keep us posted. All the best, cheers, Ted.
Sailing from Portugal to the Canary Islands seems like a huge accomplishment in itself. Thanks for sharing your story. Looking forward to your hearing about your next adventure.
Mads, you have learned the first and perhaps the most important lesson for a sailer - health and safety first, schedule last! Very sorry the adventure across the Atlantic didn't work out for you, but there will always be other sailings to look forward to, when you are in a better state. Remember, nothing is ever a failure - just another learning experience.
First off, glad you are ok. Secondly, I was seasick for 5 days across the Atlantic, and I still get seasick. I have learned to eat, even when this is the last thing you want to do. I would not call this a failure, you have gained so much more. :)
The thing about seasickness is that you think your going to die,, then later, you wish you had. Cheer up, there's nothing that can help you, just survive...
Great to see you safe and sound. My husband and I are so pleased to hear you're not discouraged in going forward with your cruising life dreams. You are such an inspiration to us, and we appreciate you sharing your experiences, even the tough ones. Thank you, Mads. On to the next adventure! :-)
Thanks for the update, My wife and I have been worried sick about you. I am so glad you are taking a positive outlook on the experience, and it hasn't deterred your love for the sea. Also whatever you find that helps could be helpful to me, as I get seasick too. Looking forward to more videos and more Mads. Get well and until next time Fair Winds.
Thank You so much for getting back to us. I was worried you might have thrown in the towel. I am so relieved you have such a good attitude about this. With just being a dreamer when it comes to sailing, I know little about seasickness. I have only been out 3 times on protected waters with little trouble. Get well, I will be waiting with everyone else for the nest step in your journey.
Mads, thanks for the update ! I'm excited to hear that you have not given up the dream of full time cruising! Just to give you some positive reinforcement, you did not fail, not at all! What you did was to find out that it was just not the time, and that my friend will change for the better a bit down the road. Fair winds and following seas.......
First of all, congratulation on making it to and setting forth on your goal of the crossing! It didn't go as planned, but don't let that get to you. I've had a few land-based adventures get cut short and I know how down I've felt about myself when I return home much sooner than anticipated. I also found that after returning home, I didn't know what to do with myself since I'd expected to be out and about for much longer. I recommend simply taking some time to reflect and appreciate what you learned and experienced. You had very good reasons behind your decisions, don't regret those. If you're anything like me, you'll probably want to shut yourself away from friends as you may feel like you've failed. But again, if you're anything like me, this probably isn't necessary as you've built a group of really amazing friends who will understand your circumstances and will even be excited to have you back home sooner than expected! Get well, sir! I look forward to seeing what you're up to in the future. I stumbled upon your channel as I was researching something for building out a van to travel and live in. I've found, after watching almost every video you've posted, that living on a boat and living in a big van are quite similar. Cheers!
I've watched nearly every one of your videos. You aren't letting anyone down by following your dreams and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. You deserve to feel proud of yourself. Thanks for everything you share!
Glad to hear you are safe and we think you made a wise decision. It's all part of the process and you continue to be an inspiration to those of us with similar dreams. Rest up and be well- Vin & Amy
Hi Mads, good to hear from you! More important. it's good to hear that you're OK. Do not worry, you'll have plenty of opportunity in the future. I am not a sailor, but I used to climb mountains: it's important to know when to turn back. Get well and keep on going.
This is NOT a failure. Any time to attempt something and you gain invaluable experience - that's a success. You may not have completed the crossing but I think you decisions and good judgment will stand you in good stead during future voyages. Trust your instincts! Hydrate a lot more in the days leading to your next passing. And on another note - how about joining Patreon so a few of us fans can show our support for you!! I've learned so much for your videos!!
Hang in there Mads! No let down here, just glad you made it off safe. As long as you have an equal number of "getting underways" and "return to ports" you've been successful!
Firstly glad you're safe at home and it's obvious you are still in recovery mode! You made the right decision, for you and just as importantly the rest of the boat crew. Huge experience has been gained and the ocean will still be there tomorrow ha ! Just get well and we'll all be looking forward to hearing about you're latest news.👍👍👍
G'day Mads, My opinion is the same as most here. This is far from a failure, but a learning experience. Seasickness is not a sign of weakness or your ability to become an old salty. It just affects people differently. I think we, to some extent get an immunity to it over time if we cruise regularly, but it will come to haunt you every so often. What works for me is to stay busy, keep the autopilot off and steer by hand. Keep occupied, avoiding heads down reading or navigating. A view of the horizon is preferred so your brain can make sense of all the movement. Avoid being inside. At the very first sign of sickness take some tablets and start fighting it by doing the above. Easier said than done I know. Look forward to attempt 2 of your next crossing. 4 x Thumbs up from me.
Hello Mads. So glad to hear from you again! I am of course sorry for you that it didn't work out as planned. But hey! You are back on our Ballad, getting better, and I am sure this experience was just a minor set back for you. I'm so pleased to see you again and I wish you all the best - get well soon. PS! I'm a proud owner of a Ballad (496) myself, and to watch your videos is SUCH an inspiration to me. Thank you so much.
You made the right decision, the water will be there tomorrow. I have a problem with my sinus' causing motion sickness. A couple boxes of OTC meds takes care of them for 3-4 months.
I have watched nearly all of your videos, and my heart hurts for your disappointment. I hope you can find a way around this hurdle. Your videos are incredibly inspiring. I'm always in awe of how much you get done in a day. I hope to see another video soon. Cheers!
you have gained 700 miles of good experience and how to deal with sea sickness at sea . Keep going you are living our dreams and we both follow you all the way. Also you are passing information and ideas to all that follow you . KEEP GOING .
So sorry to hear that you had to abandon your Atlantic crossing. Don't worry about letting us down, you did the right thing. Safety first!! I will look forward to more great videos. Glad that you are feeling better and that you are safe.
I'm just glad to know you made the right choice of choosing for your own wellbeing instead of letting your fans take the better of you ;) I think this is a great reminder for us all that its not all glory and calm seas when crossing the big one. I will keep watching your amazing vids and am curious to see your next stories :)
No worries! We were all craving your videos! We have seen other Atlantic crossings...they are boring! Glad that you are ok. When I was in the Spanish Navy( The Armada ), the Captain of the ship used to get so sea sick. He was a helicopter pilot. So no shame on that. It's something you cannot help. And you don't need to cross the Atlantic to be a sailor or a full time cruiser. Crossing an ocean is something very risky despite what some people say... shit happens. Thanks for your videos, Mads!
Mads, I am sorry to hear about the sea sickness. I am glad to hear that you are safe and sound back home. There will be other adventures and we look forward to them.
Hope you feel better! I remember, but never used, those patches you were talking about when I was in the Navy. I never heard anyone say that they worked. Luckily I never really suffered from sea sickness. Keep the chin up and push ahead with your goals! Again, I love the videos and keep them coming!
Mads....sorry to hear about what happened. I've been sailing since the early 70's and although I've never experienced a serious ocean crossing, I've coastal cruised for many years, which I've grown to love and will continue to do as long as my health holds up. While I truly enjoy your videos and those of so many others like you, the truth is I find it interesting when a newcomer to sailing presents an air of expertise to the point that other novices begin to believe that person is an expert. Now please don't take what I'm saying as mean....I don't mean it to sound that way. Anyone can think they're an expert until they get out on the big water and find out they're not as tough or experienced as they thought. Huge waves, high winds, and lightening bolts ten feet in diameter striking around the boat tend to separate the men from the boys. There are many armchair sailors who mislead others in believing they're experts...the Internet is full of them. Sadly, I chuckle watching some of those videos...Mother Nature has a way of humbling the most hearty person. But here's the deal....your courage to even contemplate an Atlantic crossing is certainly to be admired. More importantly, you've learned from this, which makes you stronger and much more aware of your surroundings...things that I admire you for. Good luck my friend....fair winds.
One time the soon-to-be Admiral Nelson wrote in his logbook: "I am ill every time it blows hard and nothing but my enthusiastic love for my profession keeps me one hour at sea." Get well soon and fair winds! __/)__
mads....what a bummer for that to be your experience in your crossing attempt. you seemed so pumped about the whole trip and I'm disappointed for you that things did not go as intended. But I guess in life, anything that can happen, does. But I have to say, your lead up videos were excellent in terms setting a good framework for someone intending to try an adventure like crossing the atlantic. I hope you get to feeling better soon and keep on making great videos
I"m glad your ok man. I got sea sick once on the ferry back from Alaska in terrible winter storm and I know it's a terrible feeling. Congrats on staying positive!
Sorry to hear about the sea sickness, and yes was looking forward to videos from the trip so alitlebit disapointed there but was also missing your weekly videos so in one way i am glad u are back :) greetings from Norway.
Just a brief message of support - good luck with your next venture/plan. I suspect from your video that the sea sickness was not the only problem, glad to see you back in one piece and hopefully will see more videos coming now..
I bet there was something in addition to seasickness that was going on. Regardless you had an experience, albeit not the one you were expecting, and now it's time for more adventures. Onward and upward! Glad all is ok with you.
Sorry for your bad news but at least you have attained some knowledge of what you can expect. Might need a crew member for our crossing in November, I hope. Chin up as we are with you. Derek
Mads, I personally don't feel that you let us down. I've been very seasick and it is a terrible feeling. To have been seasick for 5 straight days would have been unbearable. Hope you feel better soon, and look forward to your next video. Take care of yourself.
It's ok Mad's , a seasoned sailor once told me that....."one is not truly a Sailor until you've. ..... a) Run aground....., b) gotten seasick ...., c) gotten caught in an unexpected storm"..........unfortunately I've only "C" left to experience myself........not looking forward to it either..... Point is you'll get there my friend ......your an inspiration to me so I'll know you'll cross one day very soon.......
No worries. I much prefer if you show trips (short or long) with your own boat. Being crew for someone else sucks usually. There are very few captains that don't become bullies at sea...We also get seasick but have learnt to eat only salty snacks/chips for the first 24 hours and no dairy products 24 hours before. That helps a bit but not always.
Hey we've got a lot more to be worried about (like your health!) than whether or not we have a video to watch! As a relatively new viewer I've been binging your whole channel and I can safely say I'm here to stay! Can't wait to follow your future progress and endeavours and I hope to follow in your shoes some day! Best wishes from Ireland! -Eoghan :)
Glad you're safe. About the disappointment you think I might feel, nonsense. Much happier you're safe. It's a crazy thing that 'mal de mer', both unpredictable and debilitating. I'm more concerned about your frame of mind and what it makes you think about for your future but you addressed that. Looking forward to your next installment.
Oh Mads! I am sorry to hear that things didn't work out as planned. It's a real bummer. It's always better to turn back and learn something from the experience so you can adapt for the future. If anything this helps shape how you approach your goal of becoming a full time cruiser, which I know you will accomplish! :)
So sorry you got sick because I know you really were looking forward to the crossing but your health is way more important. The Atlantic isn't going anywhere anytime soon so you can tackle the crossing another day. And maybe even on your own boat next time ! I know Yokull was sure glad to see you come back early ! :-)
Sorry to hear about the troubles, but it is good to have you back. As you said, you may not have completed the crossing but you took value from the time you did have and the lessons you learned. Now take care and get yourself all the way better. =)
Glad to hear that your ok. I would imagine that there's several other sea sickness meds on the market that you could try. I got food poisoning in Mexico and was sick for a week while sailing back to San Diego. Not any fun. I managed to have lost 30 pounds in 4 days. Glad that your on your way to recovering.
Ahh.. sorry to hear that. Can only imagine how disapointed you must have been. How ever... this is by now a rather "old" video, and I now that you have come back strong several times since then on long sailing voyages. Thumbs up ;-)
Hey Mads, you absolutely made the right decision. Always better to be safe than sorry! Opportunities to sail will come and go - it's never "now or never". :-)
So sorry. I know you are bummed out. But I'm glad you thought about your safety and health first. You are keeping it real and not faking it.....that's what is important. Thanks for the update and get some rest.
This is a worry I always will have with doing a passage. Sea sickness is a bad thing to experience, hope you are ok, don't let it dampen your spirits and hopefully we hear from you soon. Looking forward to an update. Lycka till fra Stockholm
Glad you are safe. I would suggest a medical checkup to see if you have any a) inner ear issues, b) mild vertigo issues that can become intensified by 'heeling' on a large ship on an even larger ocean. Hopefully, nothing serious...
Good to see your staying positive and keeping your head up! You can buy wristbands for motion sickness which look like those tennis sweat bands and they help with motion sickness. They have a small plastic button on the inside of them not sure how they work but they do the job for me and they are inexpensive.
Sickness is the worst feeling on this planet. In my small experience it has a lot to do with the confidence you have in your mates, skipper and boat. When all is new at the same time.... Don't feel bad about taking a wise decision! It is all part of the journey. Anyway, Very happy you see it as a small bump on the road!! Once the Sea has hold of you it will never let go :-)
No disappointment with you at all! Glad you are well. Just make sure that it was seasickness and not another malady disguised as such. There are several remedies with different actions. The patches did little for me other than keep my mouth dry. I used chewable meclizine. In any case, sorry for your disappointment. Chalk up another sea story!
Don't worry too much about viewers, take care of yourself first. Glad to see you're doing well. I saw your tracker plots and that did work out well. Keep at it.
I'm getting so much information and enjoyment from your videos Mads! So glad you're not afraid to publish the fails as well as the wins! Also glad you're back safely! You will do that crossing one day soon, I'm sure... You've encouraged me in my own quest to get my tiny jaguar 22 sorted out. I might even post a few videos myself. Any tips on editing software? Steve
Mads, you didn't let anyone down!! You are already farther along realizing your dream than a lot of people. You made a very tough decision and more than likely the correct one. I happy it wasn't anything worse or permanent. As always, I am looking forward to your next video.
get well soon, Mads. Don't worry about us, you just can't disappoint. Get a rest and become strong again. I guess, the atlantic will wait for you. Glad, to have you back in one piece.
sorry for the mal de mare , but you didn't disappoint, you made a decision based upon your current state of health and We applaud that decision. I am glad you were brave enough and intelligent enough to make the correct decision for you.
Mads, not disappointed you had to jump ship, I am a bit bummed "You" did not get to cross the Atlantic this time. You made a hard call , and it is better that then to go when you think you should stop. Can't wait to see what you have lined up next, Checkers
Sad news about your Atlantic crossing but, onwards and upwards. As long as you keep making vids , we'll keep watching them. Hope to see you back on cam at 100% fitness soon.
Hi Mads been following you channel for a bit now and I've watched all your episodes and I think your channel is awesome. Just wanted to say that i hope you're not to disappointed by not making it across the Atlantic. Also can't wait for the next update. :)x5
Sorry to hear you were not well, I have missed your videos , look forward to the next, keep going its only a small blip.. Steve liveaboard SV Cascade of Hamble , Rosyth, Scotland.
Oh no! I'm sorry Mads, I can only imagine how much of a let down that was for you. Don't worry about me, you didn't disappoint me! You did what you needed to do, and I'm looking forward to hearing about your next big news! Feel better, buddy.
Glad to see you're ok Mads. Nobody thinks of this as a failure. It sucks but it's not a failure. Now hurry up and get making my favourite videos on the net!!

Don't worry about meeting someone's expectation on the crossing! We hope you get well soon. Oh, and congratulations on 10k subscribers!

I feel for you Mads. I hope you feel better soon. The seas will always be there.
So happy you are back early! Get well and let's see that engine re installed!!
Thanks for sharing and for trying. Will keep watching to see what is next and how you will keep working in the dream.
Sorry to hear about the sea sickness, I can imagine few worse things than 5 straight days of sea sickness! Thanks for sharing :-)
Oh Mads! I am sorry to hear that things didn't work out as planned. It's a real bummer. It's always better to turn back and learn something from the experience so you can adapt for the future. If anything this helps shape how you approach your goal of becoming a full time cruiser, which I know you will accomplish! :)
No worries Mads. Glad you're back safe. Get better!
Don't worry about "letting us down." Glad you are feeling better.
So sorry you got sick because I know you really were looking forward to the crossing but your health is way more important. The Atlantic isn't going anywhere anytime soon so you can tackle the crossing another day. And maybe even on your own boat next time !
I know Yokull was sure glad to see you come back early ! :-)
You sound more than a little under the weather, Mads. Get well soon. Thanks for keeping us posted. Excited to hear your plans are moving forward.
Madds, glad that you are ok. No Worries! Looking forward to more videos. Hope you're well soon!
You didn't let anyone down, bud. Gotta take care of #1, there will be more voyages. Thanks for the update, feel better!
Thumbs up ;-)
Glad to hear you're ok... No worries on not crossing the Atlantic. Best wishes...
Hey Mads, you absolutely made the right decision. Always better to be safe than sorry! Opportunities to sail will come and go - it's never "now or never". :-)
Glad you're OK! I'm excited to hear whatever the news is.
So sorry. I know you are bummed out. But I'm glad you thought about your safety and health first. You are keeping it real and not faking it.....that's what is important. Thanks for the update and get some rest.
Hi Mads, don't apologize, You don't need to. We are more than glad to see that your okay.
glad to see that you are recovering well. good luck on your future attempts of sea sailing :)
So glad you are ok now. You were very much missed while you away - lucky us to have you back sooner (small consolation to you, I know). Be well!
Don't worry too much about viewers, take care of yourself first. Glad to see you're doing well. I saw your tracker plots and that did work out well. Keep at it.
Glad to see you back. As another poster said the Atlantic isn't going anywhere so there is always next time.
Mads, So sorry for you. I know you were looking forward to the voyage. I hope you get well soon.
Steve
Thanks for making a video about this even though it was short. Can't wait to see your next one! Hope you feel better soon.
glad your home safe and feeling better. no Journey is a failure if something is learned.
Glad your feeling better. I would only be disappointed if you stopped chasing your dream of becoming a full time cruiser. Keep moving forward Mads.
sorry for the mal de mare , but you didn't disappoint, you made a decision based upon your current state of health and We applaud that decision.
Glad you are on the mend Mads. Life happens.. don't worry about us.. just get better.
Sad news about your Atlantic crossing but, onwards and upwards. As long as you keep making vids , we'll keep watching them. Hope to see you back on cam at 100% fitness soon.
Glad all is well. There will always be another chance for this. You control your destiny Mads

Oh no! I'm sorry Mads, I can only imagine how much of a let down that was for you. Don't worry about me, you didn't disappoint me! You did what you needed to do, and I'm looking forward to hearing about your next big news! Feel better, buddy.
I was wandering what happened to you!!! I hope your ok and taking care of yourself!!!!
