- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that he wants to create a buffer zone inside Russian territory.
He added that creating a buffer zone in Russia's Kursk region would be part of Ukraine’s defence strategy going forwards.
Two weeks on from the start of its incursion, Ukraine says it has destroyed two strategic Russian bridges. A Russian investigator has confirmed that Ukraine had struck and damaged a third bridge.
Moscow has called the incursion a major provocation and vowed to retaliate with a "worthy response".

What a load of nonsense. Keep this in perspective, those Ukrainian troops were needed where the Russians are putting the pressure on, not on some pointless excursion to Kursk. Russia will be able to hold onto territory that it takes, Ukraine will be driven back out of Kursk. This has got Ardennes offensive written all over it, short term gains but long term it’s an offensive from a finished army.

I believe that spike you mention in the battle lines is referred to as a salient.
Historically, military commanders would sometimes allow for a breakthrough to become a salient. The reason would be to extend enemy supply lines and move to separate and cut off the assault force. Lots of context is missing from my pedantic postulation, but the results of course depend on the commanders maneuverability on both sides of the conflict.
Russia doesn't really do manoeuvre warfare as Ukraine is displaying currently, they already sent more than 6 battalions to get blown up before they could set up defensive positions, so now they are digging miles away abandoning much of Kursk.
@@V01DIORERussia tried manoeuvre warfare in the first weeks and they basically drove trucks down main roads, got hit by guerrilla attacks then retreated before hiding behind missiles and artillery to do the work. They tried it with full air supremacy and a huge number of tanks and wound up completely ignoring basics like not driving mile long convoys of military equipment along a main road that's got no escort to guard it from roadside attackers using trees and fields to flee and duck in-between.
You don't see any more Russian paratroopers either do we? Not after they got repelled. And their little undercover fighters that were sent nightly into Kiev have went real quiet since Russia left the front to focus the east. They can't fight in any other way than artillery and infantry spam 😂

They’ve also taken many Russian prisoners and the same amount of land Russia has taken a year to get.
You clearly don't understand how a buffer zone works. If you're thinking a demilitarised border style you're completely off mark.
A buffer is a safe state, somewhere they need minimal men to guard for geographic or political reasons. For example, Belgium was viewed as a buffer state as the Germans had agreed it was a sovereign state and respected that. Alsace-Lorraine was seen as a buffer zone as it was indomitable due to the Rhein river, mountains and mass fortifications. The French Alps too. Here, a portion of Kursk has been disconnected following a large river. Ukraine can station less men along the river than they needed on the border prior because of the natural defences it provides. You don't see Russia charging men over the Dnieper do you? Too many men needed to cross it and it's too dangerous. You need an opportunity to cross and that's not there if the other side is entrenched. They have already begun creating a buffer like it or not, just as both Ukraine and Russia are using the large crossing of the Dnieper as buffers to focus on the east moreso than the coast.
Forget argueing about being pro Russia or UKraine, lets look at the situation strategically, tactically, logistically and historically.
1) What is the strategic benefit of the Kursk offensive - None except for a brief PR boost.
2) What is the tactical benefit of the Kursk offensive - None. Russia has adequate men and material to continue its Donbas offensive and stop the Kursk offensive.
3) Logistics - Ukraine relies on foreign shipments of war material and they can't stabilise their eastern front, so they definitely do not have the resources to maintain the Kursk offensive and such an offensive would require artillery and air support equal to or superior to Russia to succeed.
4) Historically - This is a replay of the Battle of the Bulge. Anyone with a glimmer of knowledge of the "Bulge" can see this.
This will not end well for Zelensky. The troops expended in this folly would of been put to better use in the Donbas region.
Your analysis is just completely ignoring this report here. They were initially on a border with no natural deterrent. They have advanced trying to secure a large river and blow up any crossings.
Basic comprehension:
They have attempted to make a more defendable position to free up men from being stationed on the border like before.
Long term this will probably break even in terms of usefulness if they can achieve it, which reports of proven photos and videos from the scenes seem to suggest they could.
And this is all when winters on the horizon, the rains are pouring down on and off making the countryside a muddy mess to traverse. If they can settle this the east comes to a halt in a month as the weather sets in with colder and wetter conditions. They can redeploy the western tanks sent to Kursk ready for a spring offensive/counter offensive.
This is in no way similar to the battle of the bulge. There are 0 commonalities. The bulge was an attempt to cut allied supplies from France into the lowlands and force retreats, if not encircled, due to the ports in Belgium and the Netherlands being overwhelmed.
Ukraine isn't trying to encircle the front here, and no matter how many bridges or rails are hit in Kursk they have others to supply the front through from Moscow farther behind lines anyways. So perhaps take the meaning of Zelenskys words literally. A buffer. A place that's more defensible with less men. Then considering the time of year it makes perfect sense.

The Ardennes offensive was the German play to cut the allies supply line, the battle of the bulge was the resulting battle that occurred. There are way more than 0 commonalities.
1. A nation losing ground on its eastern front.
2. A nation suffering from shortages in man power and materials.
3. An attack made by said nation on a weak point in their enemy’s line with troops they cannot spare and with no artillery or air superiority.
4. Quick success and gains made.
5. The enemy taking time to stabilise the bulge.
And in a short time we will have:
6. The enemy slowly grinding the bulge down.
7. The destruction of the forces in the bulge when their limited supplies run out.
All the strategic goals you’ve attributed to this folly are pure fantasy and don’t take into account the logistic reality of this conflict.

The best tactic Ukraine has so far is ambushing Russian equipment when it is traveling. The goal is to disable or capture more weapons than Russia can build or buy. This also makes it easier to capture soldiers with the least amount of harm. Remember; Russian soldiers are victims of Putin's madness too.
