I'm a proud owner of these pedals and i love everything about them, i personally think they are one of (if not the) best pedals on the market. Something a lot of you DON'T realize is that it really doesn't matter how much cash you drop on a pedal, in the end it comes down to how much you're willing to practice and improve your technique. So quit bitching about which is better, they all have their advantages, and go practice!!
I fell in love with the look of the Pearl Demon chain- that lasted for about a week- now I`m back on Speed Cobras again. Never gonna buy another expensive pedal again, sticking to Tama now
@player836 If you like the Demon Drive feel I dunno if these will be for you. They're insanely powerful, I just didn't find them comfortable to play quick on, went with Demons in the end.
@EatingRottenFetuses trust me, one of the greatest features of this pedal is the chain. on a direct drive you can't get enough power to play untriggered unless you train this for months and years.
@85Aheadstix ive had these pedals practiically since they came out. the spring on one of them just snapped one day :\ i put the other spring on it and it made the pedal feel so much better, but then again it just my preference
I agree with you over all- however, I must point out that Bozzio is an espeically melodic player (uses his kit as a sort of microcosm orchestra). Again, ultimately I agree, gotta give Portnoy credit, for sure
@EatingRottenFetuses it would be different i would like to see how tama do it, they would deffenetly pull it off, but direct drive pedals just dont have the same feel as a chain, and tama's pedals are famous for there feel. you know what i mean? but yeah it would be sweet if they did it
Maybe it's because I had the spring tension somewhat low but the Cobra Coil was bringing the footboard back faster than the beater, creating slack in the chain and causing a clunking/clicking feeling. And that's exactly why I thought the Coil is a bad idea. It would make way more sense on a direct drive pedal. I'm still going to experiment but I'll probably just remove the Coil. The Speed Cobra still feels really good without it anyway. I think the Cobra Coil is a pretty flawed idea.
A friend of mine bought the dlb. speed cobra pedals but didn't like 'em....so he gave them to me to try for a week or so....Right away I noticed the quality of the workmanship...and as much as it pains me....it's probably a better made pedal than my DW 9000s. I went over them and made some adjustments but like him I just like the feel of my DW's better. Now I have to admit I'm not a metal drummer nor a speed guy...but I think if I had had them a bit more longer...I may have been talking trade!
@DreamTheater4life on a direct drive pedal the attack is...linear. with a chain it is different. as an example on the iron cobras, use a different glide (power glide etc) and you get different results because the chain accelerates faster at the end of the stroke. it is different, trust me.
@iviaverick52 i paid 650 for mine and i still dont think i would switch them for anything...i love the demon drives but i admit i still want to try these pedals out big time
@rockexpert I got my singles for $167 each. I bought them without having much knowledge on the pedal, just wanting something decent for the price. Before hand I had been using some crap pedals that came with a cheaper drum set that I bought because I've been sort of strapped for cash lately and after I hooked these babies up, I could immediately play way faster and more intricate stuff, like All That Remains. Well worth the money, and backed up by one of my favorite drummers Captain Bluebeard!
@klick2destruct that's not true. on ANY pedal how much power you get out of it is based on how hard you step on it. thinking that a direct drive or a chain will change that is dumb. i've played direct drive pedals (demon drives, axis), and you can almost break a head with those if you wanted to
For the Price of just under 500 bucks one of the best longboard pedals. This Pedal amazed me very much. We use this pedal one a half year for heavy music, especialy for our band! First i was a little bit skeptical about the quality, but it passed the test perfectly. Nothing broken. Nothing wagly. What a pity that is not longer availably in this execution! For my opinion, demon drives or axis are much heavier and probably better processed than the speedcobra. Our Drummer`s startproblem was that he played much harder adjusted pedals (DW) before. The Speedcobra is very light running. Either you love it or you will hate it! But than you have to buy doubled priced Pedals who runs much harder and probably you will need much more feeling for harder playing and use much more power that is nonessential! But i think a good Drummer can play good on almost every pedal. For the future i will buy a high price pedal too! I wave between Demon Drive or DW 9000! All in all the Tama Speedcobra is a great pedal, who not need to hide in comparison to other ones.
Spoodermen Produktionz I've been searching for someone who can tell me about the 310 version cause I'm planning to pick it up... what else do you have to say about it?
@Astonmartin4444 i would say both a really good. but one is significantly cheaper. so thumbs up to SpeedCobra, although i've been a lifelong Pearl fan.
its not about the complexities..but how you play as a drummer...there are a lot factors to consider...imagine his prowess...yet so simple there is a magic in it...mature musicians would understand that...its more about music and less science...stop comparing..if you love music just play...pour your soulk...that's more than enough
Never played any of this pro pedals, but in my opinion the Speed Cobra looks a lot cooler then the Axis. But that's just what i think, i haven't played them so...
@85Aheadstix I see where your coming from, But i would trust portnoys opinion on these pedals, and go and get them, Because theve got to be good seeing as how much expierence he has had
I moved from regular power glide IC's to SC's. The SC's feel 25-30% lighter and quicker. There is no raised footboard design to interfere with sliding technique. It is simply a better pedal. And yes, it feels better to me than the overpriced and over hyped demon drive.
+TheWitchOvAgnesi it helps with the pedal going up. so if you want to have your springs a little looser, you dont push down as hard but still get a good rebound with the cobra coil
Read between the lines. It's not about making covers. It's about creating music. MP created about 40% of all DT songs since WD&DU. Any great drummer can play those song but can't execute new ones inside the studio. I'm not bashing Minnemann and Lang because they are also my heroes. But MP is in a different level.
@EatingRottenFetuses No way!, they get loose and squeak after a while and have no power, thats why Kollias and roddy use triggers. its all physics man,
DW's are good, but their main issue, and a big one, is how small they are. People like me, who have big feet really can't gt comfortable with DW's, especially when one ries to play really fast double bass. They just don't provide as much as you hope. I like DW, but not their pedals.
Speed Cobra because Pearl charges too much just for their name. Tama makes awesome hardware for not ridiculous money and you're getting a real quality bit of kit. Pearl might make amazing drums, but their hardware is hardly too tier
@85Aheadstix the rev did no suck, sure he wasn't the best drummer and kinda overrated, but he was a great musician and you gotta respect that even though u didn't like his music
@Astonmartin4444 Id say Speed cobras, atleast you dont have to worry about that stupid overrated direct drive connection getting loose and wobbly, it starts squeaking aswell, and all those parts costs so much to repair.
Like for example Polyrythms, paradiddling on hands and foots, Precision, Syncopation, Relative pitching, composition, and even singing. Then, I don´t know why other drummers like Marco Minnemann had to study and practice his songs for weeks, if this guy doesn´t have any skills, weird right?
Haters gonna hate MP... He might have an attitude problem. But, so what? At least he's not as arrogant as some people in the industry. Point is, whether you love him or not, he's already a legend in Prog-rock. His accomplishments and accolades in and out of DT are something to be reckoned w/. Yeah right, guys like Thomas Lang, Donati, Mangini, Minemann(?), and Bozzio are extremely insane drummers. But, what MP has is something they all lack: Musicality and melodically on drums.
@drummin4InTheShadows You serious??, it does like half the work for ya, try them for like 2 weeks and then go back to a regular pedal, and it'll feel like you have to lift you entire thigh every time!!, its quite exhausting!.
Double singles, love my speed cobras. my only bitch, I don't have the legless speed cobra hihat that sits next to my left pedal. sad face... spent cash on pedals and sabians, Franken kit supreme, lmao. pedals are the best part
to study a song like dance of eternity is like to study 200 easy songs putted together, each part of that song is not complicated, but to memorize every changing time needs time.. thomas lang needs 2-3 days to learn that, but i don't think portnoy can learn a thomas lang song not even in 4-5 life times.. "stOrk - Changing Lanes" for example, has two completely different lines of drumming with feet and hands, so... if portnoy has skills why he can't play what mangini, donati, lang does?
@Astonmartin4444 Go with the demon drives they hold up at all my gigs for heavy music or light as they really help you get into the music!!!!!!!!!!You will not regret it.
How does bozzio lack melody on drums? That guy has two octaves of toms and each has a note, he plays his fills according to the key progression of the song and you say MP is melodic and he's not? I love MP, great drummer; but he's nowhere near those guys' level both as a drummer and as a musician.
HOLY SHIT!!! So the first show he ever played with these pedals live was when I saw them? AWESOME!!!!!!!
Well said! People just have to stop idolizing just one drummer and spit shit on the others! There are so many talented drummers to learn from!
I love how Mike pronounces "Tama" incorrectly. He's like the Wilford Brimley of drums.
I fell in love with the look of the Pearl Demon chain- that lasted for about a week- now I`m back on Speed Cobras again. Never gonna buy another expensive pedal again, sticking to Tama now
drumsanddrumming did the demon drives break?
In 2024, these pedals are still awesome.
i need some help with adjusting my speed cobras to really work for fast use! any suggestions?
Ah, the Camco, I LOVED mine !! I wish they still sold them.
@player836 If you like the Demon Drive feel I dunno if these will be for you. They're insanely powerful, I just didn't find them comfortable to play quick on, went with Demons in the end.
I Have speed cobras and i need some help with my adjusting.. some tip for making them just as fast as they can go, and i can?
Have you seen other interviews and stuff?
I'M SOLD!
oh god. youre right that is just sad, I feel bad that his mind would come up with something that bad
@EatingRottenFetuses trust me, one of the greatest features of this pedal is the chain. on a direct drive you can't get enough power to play untriggered unless you train this for months and years.
bcsl drum kit behind him... i wonder what he does with all of his old drums.... i want them
Please tell me more about your experience in the music industry
@85Aheadstix ive had these pedals practiically since they came out. the spring on one of them just snapped one day :\ i put the other spring on it and it made the pedal feel so much better, but then again it just my preference
I agree with you over all- however, I must point out that Bozzio is an espeically melodic player (uses his kit as a sort of microcosm orchestra). Again, ultimately I agree, gotta give Portnoy credit, for sure
i wanted demon drives but now ive been looking up these....
Tama's Speed cobras or Pearl's Demon Drives? whats your opinion? thanks ;)
what song is this?
Which is better? Demon Drive or Speed Cobras?
Thanks anyone, because of YOUR opinion, today I bought the speed cobra, it's amazing, thanks a lot to everyone who answered ;)
@EatingRottenFetuses it would be different i would like to see how tama do it, they would deffenetly pull it off, but direct drive pedals just dont have the same feel as a chain, and tama's pedals are famous for there feel. you know what i mean? but yeah it would be sweet if they did it
@Fuck1nMetal I heard that Axis pedals break too soon, you have really take care of them.
MP uses Speed Cobras?? I'm sold.
axis longboards or these?
Transatlantic Whirlwind. It's one of Mike's side projects.
It's great
A friend of mine bought the dlb. speed cobra pedals but didn't like 'em....so he gave them to me to try for a week or so....Right away I noticed the quality of the workmanship...and as much as it pains me....it's probably a better made pedal than my DW 9000s. ones with A7X and latin percussion
@iviaverick52 well i bought them used for $500 but i still wish i wouldve bought the speed cobras instead i miss chain drives!! :(
@rockexpert
I got my singles for $167 each. I bought them without having much knowledge on the pedal, just wanting something decent for the price. I'd still go for Axis or Demon Drive. Chain pedal don't work for me anymore.
whats the price range on these?
mike portnoy FTW!!!!
@EatingRottenFetuses Nah i mean the actual direct drive part gets wobbly and squeaky, you cannot tighten that.
Wow man your comment is so enlightening and deep I can't even see you anymore!
@kevpal888 nope they still hav em here in America, my fellow pinoy
@klick2destruct that's not true. on ANY pedal how much power you get out of it is based on how hard you step on it. thinking that a direct drive or a chain will change that is dumb. i've played direct drive pedals (demon drives, axis), and you can almost break a head with those if you wanted to
when did he get a nose ring?
@winterSTU what do you mean?

David Michael Schmidt and not to mention the 310 version which is the best pedal at that price
Spoodermen Produktionz I've been searching for someone who can tell me about the 310 version cause I'm planning to pick it up... what else do you have to say about it?
Does he have attitude problems? I'd say he is whatever he wants. It is our fault if we take it wrong. But you're right in everything else ;)
MIke is telling us about the time he used the DW pedals...
@winterSTU well, yeah....he quit dream theater and one of his best friends took his place
@Astonmartin4444 i would say both a really good. but one is significantly cheaper. so thumbs up to SpeedCobra, although i've been a lifelong Pearl fan.
i played them yesterday, Fuck there smooth!
My speed cobra 910 is coming tomorrow. Love this pedal ❤
Nice! Hope they are a good pedal for you. Was Mike talking about the iron cobra 310 or 910 at the time?
Speed cobras are by far in my opinion the best chain drives, but i dont use them because i prefer direct
Dyna sync is where it's at now
since the summer of 1886
its not about the complexities..but how you play as a drummer...there are a lot factors to consider...imagine his prowess...yet so simple there is a magic in it...mature musicians would understand that...its more about music and less science...stop comparing..if you love music just play...pour your soulk...that's more than enough

It's about practicality.
Not how cool they look.
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 Dude, you replied to a 12 year old comment, holy shit xD
@85Aheadstix I see where your coming from, But i would trust portnoys opinion on these pedals, and go and get them, Because theve got to be good seeing as how much expierence he has had
"i put them on my kit..." HOLLY FUCCKKK! lol

That extra spring under the pedal strikes me as gimmicky.
Why would you need it if you have the main spring tensioned properly?
+TheWitchOvAgnesi it helps with the pedal going up. so if you want to have your springs a little looser, you dont push down as hard but still get a good rebound with the cobra coil
+danieljordison0793 Also, if you really don't need it, you just can remove it.
@spacitydrummer4JC its probly not true but every dw9000 5000 or what ever the beaters are never next to each other, are you beaters together?
Says you.. and "YOUR"... :))

Bonham is #1
0:43 He looks like Adam Sandler
Patrick Daniel Songco nope
@drummin4InTheShadows No way!, it helps with speed and power.
One person paid $700 for Demon Drives.
these or dw 900?
@EatingRottenFetuses No way!, they get loose and squeak after a while and have no power, thats why Kollias and roddy use triggers.
its all physics man,
If it's good enough for Mike then I'm sure it's good enough for the world lol
Hi Mike Portonoy drumsticks
DW's are good, but their main issue, and a big one, is how small they are. People like me, who have big feet really can't gt comfortable with DW's, especially when one ries to play really fast double bass. They just don't provide as much as you hope. I like DW, but not their pedals.
@danceofeternity3824 Had it up to the last sentence.... Almost.
@winterSTU That's what happens when you have no work!!!!! lol
mmmh.. i like your arguments.. skills like what? ambidexterity? orchestration? speed? independence? eclecticism? what are his innovations?
where can you buy his t shirt
TAMA is The Best!🤘🥁🤘
Hi Maoll
MP Skills are still far bigger than his Ego...
Speed Cobra 910 or Demon Drives and why?
Speed Cobra because Pearl charges too much just for their name. Tama makes awesome hardware for not ridiculous money and you're getting a real quality bit of kit. Pearl might make amazing drums, but their hardware is hardly too tier

@wilfordmays-it doesn't matter how you say tama, tomato ,tAmato:).all that matters is you play the crap out of your kit!
@nnero0 Damn straight!,
Why are Thomas Lang and Mike Portnoy being compared, they are two completely different drummers good Lord people.
he doesnt even use these
@percypiggle6 these all the way
@iviaverick52 i did :( i feel so dumb i realize how much i hate direct drive now
If mike portnoy says they are good.... then they are good

@Astonmartin4444 speed cobra men i sold my demon drive
