    I agree the older lamps/ burners work better than the new ones today. We don't have as many as your family but we have 10 lamps and two Deitz lanterns. All but three of the lamps are antique, two hanging lamps we bought through Lehman's, and the other was a Goodwill find for half price( color tag day), so paid $1.25 for it. The antique lamps we bought from a private sale through Penny saver type newspaper. We looked at the Alladin lamps, but they are expensive and for a brighter light, we use a LED battery operated lantern, we also use these LED lanterns in our barns.

    Good morning. I have made several of the quart jar lamps from some of the jars, green, from my Grandmother and given them to members of our family as a reminder of Anna. I find that filling the jar part way with either marbles or small stones, gives them more weight in the bottom and less "tipsy." Some of the oil is also displaced and not as much oil is needed to "fill" the lamp. Works! Have a good one. >

      Ruth, as I mentioned in my comment above, I have been making emergency oil lamps out of empty jars.
      There are many videos on YT telling you how to do it.

    Found a dozen lamps(9 useable) for 10 bucks at a garage sale once upon a time. I've always loved burning them, but I got chewed out on a particular website by a gentleman who was iritated with those of us who were unfamiliar with the toxic fumes oil lamps produce. I use K-1 fuel and have kerosene on hand in case of emergencies. Unfortunately I use my lamps much less now because of that reason.

      @@henryottis295 I use kerosene, but lamp oil should be just fine. Aladdin sells their own brand of lamp oil also. I hear low odor mineral spirits will work well also, it's closer to coal oil which is what they originally made oil lamps to run on in the mid to late 1800's.(after whale oil lamps of course).
      Don't try to use gasoline, alcohol, or vegetable oil. Some are dangerous, and some just won't wick properly.
      I hear that in Europe they use the term paraffin to describe what is kerosene in the USA. If you're in the US don't try to use Liquid paraffin as it's completely different, from what I hear it's actually a liquid wax.
      Don't be over fearful of warning labels, remember they are written by lawyers. Just use them as a guide for something to be aware of and have some common sense. Such as not sealing yourself up in a small airtight space with a running fuel burning appliance. Although carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and low oxygen levels are real, they're normally only a problem in confined spaces, not an average room in a house.

      We use kerosene and seldom have a smell. There are those that swear by the actual lamp oil, which is expensive, and we have used that couple times but found that can smell just as kerosene. What we have learned is lamps can smell if the wick is not adjusted properly, if the lamp is sitting in a breeze and on a rare occasion, kerosene can get old and then smells no matter what you do.

    Nice collection. I wanted to add one thing to watch out for. I had an antique base and it needed a new burner, there was no repairing the old one, so I bought one that looked the correct screw on mouth size at Ace Hardware and discovered that the threads were Metric and would not screw onto the old imperial threaded base for nothing, even though being roughly the same size. So be careful of Chinese replicas replacement parts.

    • @johnwyman6331

      Olive oil has a much higher viscosity than kerosene therefore it does not climb the wick nearly as well. Diesel fuel is very similar to the viscosity of kerosene just not quite as refined. From what I hear jet A can also be used. Miles Stairs wick shop recommends low odor mineral spirits.

    • @jonofarc443

      @@johnwyman6331 Yes to Jet A. I've used it in my lamps, and it burns bright and clean. The guys at the local airport always take some home to use in their kerosene heaters and lanterns. There may be a little bit of the de-icer Prist in Jet A, especially during wintertime. The mechanic at our airport, who went to college to study fuel, said the little bit of Prist won't hurt as long as your house is well ventilated. Jet A is just highly refined, high quality Kerosene.

    • @ArtisanAcre
      @ArtisanAcre  5 місяців тому

      Sometimes it is hard to tell. The new cast is usually from China and has some very obvious flaws to look for. 2 that are real give away, often it is crooked or has a very jagged edge somewhere on it. If there is a reproduction that does not have either of those 2 flaws then it is indeed often hard to tell.

    • @ArtisanAcre
      @ArtisanAcre  4 роки тому +1

      It may be just as simple as playing with the wick height, sometimes we get a lamp that becomes finicky on where the wick is. Try turning it up as high as you can without it smoking, let is be fore few minutes then smell to see if the smell has improved, you will need to smell over the chimney (as any off smell before can linger in a room for a bit) but don't get so close you burn yourself. If the smell is better then try backing down the flame a bit and repeat the smell test after a few. If it is back then increase the flame again. If this does not work, try moving the lamp to a different area and repeat the above steps. If this doesn't help I would try another lamp to see if it is doing the same thing, if so then it is the oil, if not, then it is the lamp itself.
