I grew up with a simplified version of this cake and I always make this for friends' birthday parties. In Dutch it is called Arretjescake. It is absolutely amazing!!
I looked online and a good substitute for golden syrup is to combine two parts light corn syrup plus one part molasses. But I'm going to look in the international section at my grocery store to see if they have it. Looks really good, I can't wait to try it Donal!
In my country we have a version of this using just biscuits and a mixture of chocolate and butter, shortening or something similar. Is's called a 'cold dog' -> "Kalter Hund"
They are Malted Milk Balls in America. Whoppers are the best brand, but there is one other brand that makes them. You can also get them in specialty food stores or a candy store, which are made by a better chocolatier, and those are the best ones!
Yes! The little party goody bags were the best!! Love the nostalgia of this recipe. Reminds me of my favourite slice that my grandma makes. Hope you guys are doing well. Exciting times ahead. Hope Sophie and baby are good. Lots of love from New Zealand
Simple recipe, yet ridiculously delicious and brings the whole family together when served at home! There’s one huge difference between you and other cooking/food channels, your simply far above them by being passionate about everything you do. Thanks from Japan Donal, keep it up making these amazing videos for everyone to enjoy and share with their loved ones.
Epic!!!! I made this today😊😊I would have loved to share a pic but seems only the crumbs left!!!New family favorite , 2Hour biscuit treat!!/lots of love from India loved that its eggless and easiest
I love rocky road so I'm gonna love this! also thanks for cleaning the bowl, this is always a pet peeve for me when watching cooking videos. And how cute is the word "tumbling"?! #thingsiloveaboutthisvid
They're called Whoppers in America, and I too would love a birthday cake like that. I never had homemade birthday cake when I was a kid, so you are very lucky to be able to make one yourself.
Best. Video. Ever. it's hilarious how much my partner (who is also irish) loves chocolate biscuit cake as much as you! I shall be making this this weekend, looking forward to seeing the childish look on his face when he sees it!
This turned out absolutely delicious - followed the instructions - he made it fun to make and everyone enjoyed it especially the birthday girl; my daughter Jane 🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Fab Donal- great celebration cake- will defo make this with my kids! You will get plenty of practice making all these kinds of goodies in the coming years!😉 And u can let your little one lick the spoon!!☺☺
In Malaysia, this kind of dessert resemble "Kek Batik" or "Batik Cake".. Almost the same ingredients but with slightly different techniques but still a no bake chocolate cake..
Really nice to see your full and real personality come out on your own channel. Free from the constraints of scripted TV. Lovely to get to know the real you. Have been watching you since Kitchen Heroes on RTE :). Congrats on the success of your channel.
I hope someone in the dorm has a cake tin, I'd make it in an instant! Quick question- do the biscuits become soft as the cake rests or are they still crunchy?
fenawesome I'm Indonesian and honestly this is my first time seeing this type of cake. It's simple and interesting! I'd ask about this kek batik to my Malaysian friend for sure. Does Malaysian version have a twist on the recipe or is it exactly the same as shown? Thanks in advance! :)
Melur Fatima Haris we didn't use chocolate instead we use Malaysian's favorite Milo 😋 and since digestive biscuits is quite pricey, we use Marie biscuits 😉 u should try both version though, ask ur friend to make it for u 😌
fenawesome isn't Milo too runny and will dissolve the biscuits? Idk we only have Milo powder and small Milo beverage. I love Marie! The funny thing is there's a digestive brand here that cheaper than Marie 😂 I wish I could ask her to make this for me but she's in Malaysia and I'm here in Indonesia 😢
Melur Fatima Haris use the powdered Milo, just whack it into the melted butter, with few other ingredients, you'll get the same result as what Donal dia 😉
Definitely I will try your recipe! Reminds a Italian sweet called Straw or Palha Italiana in Brazil and of course we use Brigadeiro to make Palha Italiana lol u should try this as well ! yummy 😋
is there anything you can use to replace golden syrup or make your own because my country is so lame and doesnt have half the things that are required in fancy recipes
even tho this video has a whole lotta drama going on and im sure other vids too have that, yet im going to subscribe just so that i can see this beauty cooking ...because it relaxes my heart ...i know ...im sorry....but well i cant help it...lol
This is a Danish traditional cake! It is very retro. It used to be something that workers and vey common folk would eat. But not with good quality chocolate obvious. And no fruits.
There's just so much passion in this guy. I find it so admirable. Guess loving what you do looks like this.
I love the way Donal says *butter*
Ammu Parvathy *Burrrtttttteeeeerrrrr*
and "wundervoll" almost german
Love how the simplest recipes are often the tastiest! YUM.
Is it bad to admit I'm drooling at the sight of this...?! Looks so tasty!
for the cake or who's making it? just a cultural question lol
Ahahaha same 😅
A favourite addition of mine is chopped crunchie bars! Delicious!
The excitement of you reminiscing about your childhood was adorable!! Looks so yummy!
I like how personal and emotional this is for you :)

Genau, ziemlich ähnlich zum kalten Hund. 🐶
He is such a skilled host in addition to a chef haha

The cake looks really delicious!!!
If you were to do a white chocolate cake.. use Oreo biscuits (not the cream)... their bitterness will counter the sweetness from the white chocolate
Love this video! Donal is such fun to watch! He has great recipes as well!
They're called Whoppers in America, and I too would love a birthday cake like that. I never had homemade birthday cake when I was a kid, so you are very lucky to be able to make one yourself.

I hope someone in the dorm has a cake tin, I'd make it in an instant! Quick question- do the biscuits become soft as the cake rests or are they still crunchy?
We called this KEK BATIK (batik cake) in Malaysia. I think they called it the same in Indonesia too. Not sure, I'm Malaysian btw 😅
fenawesome I'm Indonesian and honestly this is my first time seeing this type of cake. It's simple and interesting! I'd ask about this kek batik to my Malaysian friend for sure. Does Malaysian version have a twist on the recipe or is it exactly the same as shown? Thanks in advance! :)

Definitely I will try your recipe! Reminds a Italian sweet called Straw or Palha Italiana in Brazil and of course we use Brigadeiro to make Palha Italiana lol u should try this as well ! yummy 😋

Will it melt easily??
How much time are we supposed to keep the cake in the freezer?
Your wife is so blessed... To get to have all that lovely food..😁😁
Malted milk balls in America are called Whoppers
Though they DO sell Maltesers (in certain stores) in the US as well. ;)
those are just brand names for mmballs
i did it. but vegan and glutenfree. DELICIOUS!! THX
In my country,we called it 'kek batik jawa' due to the pattern that looked like batik jawa,an indonesian fabric.
I love it. M suffering from typhoid and have bitter taste of my tongue, i got so mouth watered that I was going to lick the screen 😋
What a sentimental video.Childhood memories of you.Great.
Looks good. How is Sophie?
