- With Zelenskyy thousands of kilometers away at the G7, back in Ukraine the head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group has claimed a breakthrough on the battlefield.
Yevgeny Prigozhin claims in this video that his forces have fully captured the eastern city of Bakhmut. Ukraine's military has been quick to deny the ruined city has fallen. Kyiv says its troops are still defending their positions.

Russia most likely need it as the anchor for their next assault towards their main prize in Ukraine, Odessa.

Honestly the battle was a shitshow from both sides, Ukrainian forces nearly being cut off mixed with their own inefficiencies, and the Russians having to use increasingly outdated equipment while they have to also deal with increasingly corrupt politicians. The only reason it seems to be only the Russians dying is because Ukraine has covered themselves in a thick fog of war that makes it very difficult to get information about their side, while the Russian side is being broadcasted to television by Basically every news station in the planet. Although I can still be certain that the Russian casualty rates are definitely way higher then Ukrainian ones in the city.

Just from the 14th of May Ukranian strted attacking the encirclement flanks and opened a way for their troops to retreat. Unless they want to attack & take part of the the city again, the city is now in Russian hand

The strategic gain for Ukraine is not the city itself, it is the tying down and attritting of Russian forces. Russia is still moving troops into the area leaving other actual strategic sites less well defended.
They have fortified the city since 2014. One of the best defended places in the world. After this they will have to fall back to less dig in areas. Let’s hope the Russians don’t give them time and steam roll them
