This is a hard game to prove its worth without having your hands on the controller yourself.
All of a sudden the game really clicked for me and out of nowhere I found myself fully onboard for whatever the franchise has in store next! (Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain)
I have currently converted two of my friends and my wife to the co-op EDF cause and it is a blast to play with some buddies.

The game seems silly at first glance, but it is just extremely fun.
Playing as the jetpack chick with the Lance weapons (short range lasers basically) is the most fun I have had on console in ages.
Wait until you get more dashes + boosts for fencer. Best combo in gaming.

Wing Diver can't even compare.
@@der_saftmon Wing Diver has dash cancelling on the ground too and if I remember correctly one DLC core (higher dash distance) makes her even faster than fencer in EDF5.

We know that in this reboot of the EDF universe, we are on an earth where ants, spiders and frogs do not exist and no earthlings are able to recognize them or find them in any way familiar.

They do call out the bees though. That surprised me.

as an EDF series veteran is it just absolutely amazing to hear newcomers to the series just.... "get it" about these games, and have such a blast with them.
Therussianbadger made me instantly vibe with this game series.
And I am eager to get 6, when it comes to the west.
(I only have 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair, but I dig it)

EDF has always only been interested in one thing and that's being, pure, uninterrupted arcade fun. It does it with no frills and no pretensions. It's a video game and it damn well knows it.

The story telling while simple is actually very good as the tone was consistent from start to finish, especially how the story unfolds.

Wait until you reach mission 41 and beyond. Around that point, this game takes off its gloves (if you can even imagine it was wearing any to begin with) and starts becoming noticeably more chaotic than it already is lol.
Just reached mission 90, myself. Apparently, this game has 110 campaign missions so i'm getting close to the end. Just 20 more to go...and no end to the chaos in sight lol.
That's just the beginning. Then you.need all the wepons!
Things always get more interesting, once you unlock inferno difficulty. Then you'll know the true meaning of gloves off.

I’ve never seen a game in my life that actually made shooting a Enemy such a rewarding and tactically pleasing task.
Being on top of a building, and firing a plasma cannon at a mech and doing so for serval minutes adjusting aim to throw off his aim was fantastic, the buildings around me crumbled as he barely missed and his aim was thrown off by my plasma canon, the buildings behind him crumble form the shockwaves of the plasma canon hitting him and my missed shots, my being forced back as he would destroy my building cover...
The entire game is just, rewarding
Nevermind the fact there was 7 other of those fuckers around the map and I was dealing with just 1 of them
Even hard with the Grey’s in suit is challenging if your team isn’t working together

the hectors were my favorite mass produced enemies to Die because of:
1- being destroyed by 90% of my arsenal
2- getting their arm ripped off by the Lysander Z
3- getting god-sniped by me in a tank (inferno 1 shot's are awesome :D)
I recommend Killing Floor 2 if you love choatic, difficult yet fair fun like this, gonna get this game later this week

I feel like I’m the one of the rare Air Raider players who uses the Medic vehicle instead of a tank or some offensive vehicle online. Even in 4.1 I hardly saw anybody using the Armored Caravan Support vehicle besides me. But hell whenever I was in a lobby everybody swarms to me because I’m the Medic I even changed my characters colors to white and red xD
Sora Terumi lol in online i’m the ranger and i’m the field medic, cause everyone thinks charging a shotgun and a laser cosmonaut is a good thing.
That speech about eyes was some Churchill level shit. I could imagine the Big C saying that before the D-day.
To me I instantly clicked with the tone of the game. There's something inherently compelling about B-movie gun-ho soldier archetypes eagerly throwing themselves into the meat grinder and getting slaughtered en mass. It has somewhat of a similar thing going for it in that regard that the film Starship Troopers did. The thing is EDF has this "thing" going for it too where as things get more desperate and the humans get beat more and more despite your efforts it sort of takes a bit of a darker tone while still keeping the cheesiness and corniness intact.
I can remember when I played the first mission on the ps3 version "Save the civilians!" *PROCEDES TO MURDER BUGS, CIVILIANS AND MY TEAM MATES*
In EDF there is no room for whiney babies. We destroy aliens against all odds equipped with the best fps drop in the entire world! EDF! EDF! EDF!

Been a huge fan of EDF since finding EDF 2017 in the bargain bin at a game store years ago. I've played a lot of games since the NES, but the EDF games never disappoint and are always some of the most fun games you could ever play if you're just looking for mindless action and want a break from deep, sophisticated stories! EDF 5 is no exception, and I'm having an absolute blast playing it!!
Also, if you're looking for a challenge, you haven't seen a challenge quite like playing an EDF game on inferno difficulty!
Don't you dare try to tell me EDF doesn't have one of the most philosophically profound and gut wrenchingly human tales in the medium.
This game is an excellent palate cleanser.
My first EDF game and having a blast. The minute my character started singing little sections of those songs you can sing while killing giant bugs, I knew I was gonna love it.
I been playing EDF since 3(2017 in the US), I was immediately hooked, imported the 1st 2 games. I love how in the 1st 3 games buildings get blown up with one explosive of any kind. Once you get eh Stampede M20 you can level a skyline instantly. 5 is excellent, they've really just given fans of the core gameplay more of what we want, and it has really payed off.

This game is criminally underrated.
That level is pretty tame too. This game gets real crazy.

EDF was just a nice change of pace for me. Gigantic insects? No developers would dare to do that because its so bizzare. And when the gigantic fortress comes into place, my frames dropped to below 10 and I didn't even care.

Its a great game. Play with a friend, split screen couch coop. Have a beer and slaughter thousands of giant insects, very nice!

Yeah, I get bored watching most of the playthroughs of this game because they're all on normal difficulty. There just isn't enough things to shoot at on normal.

@@regensyscronos347 Not even. It's all dependent on how much you grind armor and weapons. If you want to solo inferno expect to grind for a long time.
@@regensyscronos347 You play play on Hardest and Inferno offline too, you unlock those difficulties by beating the last campaign mission on any difficulty :-) Yes Inferno is hard but that's how I learned to appreciate the true depth of EDF (where in Normal/Hard it's a fun and mostly braindead game, but Inferno gets your noggin' joggin')

Mark Oman This game is cross platform too? It definitely needs some of those players. Of course, I don’t play Fortnite or have played this game before, but I support cross platform games.
@@mrdude88 No, it's only on PS4, but I can see it coming to PC later. The studio is too small to get it running on Switch and I assume the titles that were released on 360 sold like shit, so it's not worth porting those games to Xbox.
@@mark-o-man6603 Most of the EDF games the hit the PlayStation library besides Vita versions was also on Xbox.. AI, 2017 and 2025 was on Xbox as well. 4.1 is 2025 version for PS4.

I used to play the first game of this frachise in PS2, it was such a great game at the time.
First clip is Fencer😁. Hell yeah welcome aboard lol. I think splitscreen is essential for all games.
Split screen is such a rarity that even if I don't like EDF (I'm playing through 4.1 and haven't decided), I'll still praise the game for having it as a feature. Now I just need to convince my family to also get into it.

I picked up EDF 4.1 on sale late last year and loved it, since then bought 5 and played it split screen to completion and again solo on harder difficulties. Great game!
Straight up action. Love it in its simplicity. This is all gaming needs to be. Fun. Not lecturing & faults promises.
I did exactly the same in 2018-19 and we finished 2017,4.1,5, IA and IR all in split screen.
The 5 is incredible and peak of the series. I just returned to it now in 2022 and it's so good. Runs 4k60 flawless on pc too. Mouse controls are great. It's 60fps on ps5 too

I've been a fan of this series since 2013, and there are two things I've noticed in this game that VASTLY improve my enjoyment of it.
First one is Wing Diver being given a dodge roll action. This is INSANELY useful and was sorely missing from previous iterations.
Second one is a QOL improvement, and that's the sprint function. Being able to travel across the map really fast while also being able to pick up crates within a larger radius alleviates a lot of the issues we had about the previous games, where we had to tediously combat roll around just to pick up all the crates. Now you can travel around the map super fast and you can pick up more crates at once.
My only gripe with the game are the first two or three missions which are basically just a tutorial and should've been optional.

I play EDF 5 on PC in 5k and honestly its one of the best looking games I own, yeah the graffics are a little dated but you see every shell caseing, everything is destroyable, when you shoot enemies pieces of them come off, this game pays ALOT of atention to detail and is more realistic and has more destructive environments then even the newest battlefield games.
The first time you and some randos sing the entire song together is truly magical. And so is the second. The third *notthefourthnotthefourth* and fifth time as well.
Played hundreds of hours of EDF, can't wait to get 5. It came only digital in America right?

Wow legitimately one of the best games I have ever played. I am so happy I bought this.
In EDF 4.1 there is a wing diver weapon with 15 shots named the Custom lancer and is the upgraded version of the normal lancer. The weird thing about it is disgustingly OP. It can take the robots out in 4 to 5 shots while it takes out the ants and arachnids out in 1 shot. The thing can also do real absurd damage against the motherships that drop the ants. The problem with the wing diver back in EDF 4.1 is that the energy management is a little insane. And that was my go to weapon.

I had this game sitting in my cart because it was on sale, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to purchase it. Then the sale ended. And I went to purchase a different game, and I was just pressing ex to get through the purchase screens, and I ended up purchasing this game at full price by accident.
It literally just happened this morning, and I’m already addicted to this game.
Me just driving straight into this series was the best thing I've done. Never played a EDF game till I got EDF 5. AND WOW It's really something of a new experience._.
I loved EDF4.1 in the PS3 days. Just bought EDF5 today, and 5+ years later, I can tell you with certainty after a couple hours, that EDF5 is "simply more of the same things". More importantly I can also tell you: "WHAT A GAME! !!"
The best from the West gave us the legendary XCOM games.
The beast from the East gave us the legendary (yeah it is!) EDF!

I played this with my brother for HOURS! This game is addicted as you said in the thumbnail. We couldn't stop playing togheter on the campaign and versus mode. This game is the goat for me 🐐

EDF is an amazing series been playing it for years it's just sad it took 8 games and unreal 4 to do it for people cause there all hung up on looks, have we really forgotten about the joy that was single player and multilayer games that are not broken and filled with micro transactions. They crappy B+ video games are what define games when they were games and not pay to play services. good review!

Oddly I never played this game from the previous series. One day someone posted the ign review in a fb group. Before it even finished I was like i want that damn game! Bought it as soon as I could and just love it so much.
Just thinking about the fact that a normal not-so-famous PS2 game literally became a famous PS4/PS5 game is just insane.

Get 5 instead. They play very similar, but 5 has a bunch of improvements.
If you play on PC 4.1 is your only option right now, 4.1 is an excellent game on it's own. That said 5 is a big step up from what I've been reading.
You sold me on this game. I'd always see Japanese streamers playing this but never thought about getting it myself. Just wish i had some buddies to play it with, I can't imagine the online being that busy for such a niche game.
You'd be surprised. Online lobbies for EDF game are constantly busy many years after release. The people who play this game PLAY this game.

I'd love to see it evolve to a UFO like gameplay with an upgradable base, research all the thousands of weapons it has now and missions all over the world. On one side you'll have the story mission and on the other side, you'll have random missions for endless shooting.
Sounds like a mix of EDF and XCOM!

They had a good graphics version that took place in the US a while back.. but I don't think it did well.
Iron Rain and Insect Armageddon are fun games but they do not have the same charm as the traditional series.
