  • Leopold Noiriel is one of the most important and prolific Italian double bass makers. His output was large, and his making style progressed significantly throughout his career, which spanned from around 1820 to 1845. This example is in his most interesting period of making, with the model and head being extremely characterful. This double bass has been restored in our workshop and is offered in excellent condition. The varnish is to die for. The sound is truly outstanding, and the comfortable playability makes it a dream solo double bass, although it would be just as well suited to the orchestra. This is the instrument of a lifetime.
Description: The front is constructed from three pieces of medium-to-wide-grained spruce and has a single line of purfling. The back is round without a break and is constructed from two pieces of plain
poplar with wings added at the lower bout flanks and has a single line of purfling. The sides are constructed from similar plain poplar to the back. The head is carved from plain walnut and is fitted with four silver-plated Italian machine heads set on brass cheek plates. The instrument is covered in amber-red varnish laid over a light brown ground.
