- Kerikeri steam sawmill New Zealand
After 32 years of smooth operation the last log was lopped into pieces at the last
steam-driven sawmill in New Zealand on 2015 December 14.
Owner Max Birt says they've had to close the Kerikeri Inlet Rd mill because
they can't afford to get rid of their wood waste in line with council requirements.
The smoke from the burn offs caused neighbours to complain to the Far North District
Council and the mill is now required to burn their waste in a furnace Birt says.
"For a mill that was cutting very low volumes it was just uneconomic."
Mike and Dave Collins built the sawmill which cut its first log in 1983. They were
always interested in steam and had grown up pottering around their dad's
tractor-driven sawmill.
The mill was assembled with odds and ends from various nooks and crannies.
Dave says they have used three hospital boilers, a 1903 steam engine that
hadn't been used since WWII until ten years ago and the whistle from an AB class steam locomotive.
"We just find bits and pieces around. Everything in this plant is redundant
from some other place. Even the boiler."
The biggest thing Kerikeri residents may notice is the silence that greets
them at 8.30am, 11.30am, 2.30pm and 5.30pm when the steam whistles would
usually sound off. The whistles are used for "time keeping, communication and fun".
