Thank you for sharing this important viewpoint - the shelter girls collages are amazing and the prompt you gave them is really meaningful. I have 30 min for lunch ... just time enough to relax and visit with other teachers.

Thank you so much for sharing! You did such a great job presenting what a day looks like for you. My break is 30 minutes for my lunch and a 40-minute prep period. 15 minutes I am sure goes very fast! Do you not receive prep time in your day? How many students do you work with at a time? Did you have to have any additional training or certifications to work in the facility that you do? Thank you again!!

Hello Jessica! Thank you for your questions. I prep at home as I am a contracted teacher through the school district. Maximum number of students is 12 per unit (unit of younger boys/older boys/younger girls, etc ). Yes, I have extra training in deescalating situations and PREA. I also voluntarily search out appropriate trainings related to our students and their placements.
Thank you again for you support!

You seem like you have teaching all figured out. Was the first year tough and have you been threatened during teaching?

Hi Pamela! Thank you for your questions. The very first class I taught I was terrified but quickly realized these kids are my peeps. Like all students, they need to feel cared about, respected, and understood. I have never been threatened by a student. I have had my fare share of outbursts and lash outs. However, I understand the circumstances behind their big emotions so I put A LOT of work into not taking it personally and practicing empathy.
