Its a difficult situation in Vietnam and in Germany. I had a same situation. Between Thailand and Switzerland. My husband suffered a lot to not be in Thailand. So i got back with him. Now we live Ko Samui with our Restaurant. Life IS coming very good for US. I wish you that you find a solution. Maybe in a Sunny country like Italy, France.
Oh yes, that doesn't sound easy either. To be honest, I (Etienne) am mostly afraid of Thanh not being able to integrate and establish his life in Germany. Especially at the beginning, when we both don't have many friends, and he needs to learn the language, I want to focus on making this as easy as possible for him. But yes, we will have a look at other EU countries too in the future.

@@etivathanh My view is that it's much easier when at least one of the two in the relationship is a citizen, or at least perfectly comfortable with the language and the culture of the land. I guess it depends on the people, but when both are strangers in the land, it can be that much more difficult to navigate and adapt.
You are going back to your homeland. Not enough connections initially but you speak the language and you know the culture even with some recent changes you mentioned. and you can help Thanh with the language and the culture much easier as a native. Plus, you speak and understand the Vietnamese well ( I don't know but you obviously converse with him and others in Vietnamese and you have spent 10 years in Vietnam, so I would assume as such?). It will only help your relationship grow stronger as Thanh learns to speak German and gains better understanding of the culture I believe. More things about you will make sense to him. Once he's comfortable in the language and the culture, then, perhaps, you could consider moving around? but of course, you have to follow where they offer the best opportunities for you both.
@@MrWhitney4e Yeah, that's true. In a way that's easier. However, I also see the risk that, while I can probably re-integrate into German society easier (though, I'm not completely sure about this either), it will be more difficult for Thanh, and we will not always do everything together (e.g. when he gets a job). But in general, I think it's probably still easier if at least one of us knows the country, culture rather well.
I'm not sure I'd call Germany my homeland. It was the place I was born and grew up, but "home" has a such a complex meaning. Nevertheless, you're right. I can help Thanh a lot, of course. And yeah, I'm fluent in Vietnamese too (though we mostly use English with each other). I also think it's a good idea to stay in Germany at least for a while and then see where it takes us.
I want to add this: I dont think I can help you two in any way, but IF you find a way I can help you - just ask and I will do what I can.

Good luck to you both. What a wrench. One good thing is that you could both get married in Germany should you want to. That would give you legal rights, and who knows, If Vietnam does eventually accept gay marriage, you would hopefully be able to go back to Vietnam as an already married couple with legal rights. Remember when times get tough, that love will conquer everything. You just have to work out how you are going to make a living when in Germany so that financial pressures don't add to your problems.

Not boring at all. I actually like content like this where I get to know more about the people.
I'm all about security and stability so leaving the comfortable space behind is very difficult. Moving overseas is even worse. Fortunately, I had a relatively easy start in the US because I already spoke English and had some friends and contacts. But as a foreigner in the county, I had the same headache of keeping up with the legal status everytime there was any change like school transfer/work.
So happy that I do not have to worry about any of those paper works related to legal status anymore! Yay!!
Now, I am moving to Germany in three weeks. My German is pretty much super basic, and Germans typically switch to English when I struggle to speak, out of good intention, but this makes learning German rather difficult.
I'm both excited and scared about the move at the same time. I have a German husband so I'm not terribly unprepared but still it will be a major challenge for me to adapt to a new country. In a way we will be in a similar situation as you and Thanh, a German and a non-German couple in Germany. We have our family there which is nice, but we have almost no friends since my hubby has been out of Germany for well over 10 years. Still, I'm trying to be hopeful. Wish us all the best!!
By the way, is Thanh pronounced more like Tang? I have no knowledge of the Vietnamese language but just figured Thanh sounds like Tahn just based on the spelling. After watching some of your videos, I really want to visit Danang one fine day!!

Yeah, the changes in the legal status can be very tiring, I know this very well from living in Vietnam for so long. That's actually one thing I'm looking forward to: full rights for both of us in Germany, yay! Haven't had those in a long time.
Don't worry, I'm sure you can figure out the German too. It will take some time, but most Germans are usually very helpful with that and used to foreigner trying to learn German.
Thanh's name is pronounced a bit like if you say "Thai" and add "ng". His name has no tone, so it's a flat, even pronunciation. Maybe in the next video, I can include a part about that (though I gotta figure out how to explain that :D).

Im suddenly very sad… sad that you have to move out of a country that you both want to live in (and also me are looking for the possibility to live in Danang). If I were you I would probably stay with a tourist visa and cross the border once a month… or try to extend the visa until you have to cross the border. For both your sake. But Im sure you have both discussed this and agree on that Germany is the best choice right now. I really really hope you two stay close together and that you take good care of Thanh in a foreign country for him. Love from Sweden ❤
Yeah, it is kind of sad in a way... I spend a lot of time getting used to everything here, learning the language, the culture, and so on. A tourist visa would unfortunately make things only more difficult (rights, health insurance, bank accounts, etc.), so yeah, at the moment, Germany is the best option.

Not sure yet, to be honest :D Thanh is still renovating his dad's house for at least this week. I think we'll take it easy and maybe gift ourselves a spa & wellness day (we thought about travelling, but given that Germany is so close, we'll have enough travelling soon). What about you?
War es für dich nicht möglich, das Ein-/Ausreise-Visa-Spiel zu spielen, um weiterhin in Vietnam zu leben? Ich frage, ohne deine spezifischen Beschäftigungsumstände und die Wohnsituation deines Freundes zu kennen, aber ich kann mir vorstellen, dass es einfach ist, eine Mietwohnung zu finden. Ich habe viele Freunde in Vietnam, die genau das tun: ab und zu für einen Ausflug hier und da gehen und dann mit einem neuen Visum wieder ins Land einreisen.
Jap, das wäre theoretisch möglich, um zumindest für eine Weile in Vietnam zu bleiben. Dauerhaft ist es allerdings weniger hilfreich, denn die ohnehin schon wenigen Rechte, die man als Ausländer in Vietnam genießt, sind noch mal weiter eingeschränkt, wenn man nur Tourist ist: Kein vernünftiges Bankkonto, Versicherung geht dann theoretisch nur eine internationale, Einkommensquellen vollständig abhängig von Remote-Work, usw... Schlimmer noch sind dann so krasse Geschichten, wie nicht füreinander da sein zu können, wenn es mal richtig notwendig wäre. Wenn Thanh beispielsweise im Krankenhaus wäre, hätte ich, obwohl ich anderswo legal sein Mann bin, keinerlei Recht in Vietnam, irgendwelche Entscheidungen zu treffen.
Alles in allem ist dann langfristig also keine Lösung...

This was a few months ago. I hope it all worked out for you both! I guess a spousal visa is only for straight couples as same sex marriage is not legal in Vietnam. It is complicated and I have to figure it out as I like a guy from Korea.
So far, everything has been working out fine. Thank you! Yes, those visas are only for straight couples in Vietnam...our marriage had effectively no meaning in Vietnam. At least in Germany, we can live together without fearing that one of us needs to go.

I don't know if you married in Vietnam would of helped. But my suggestion is look up Thailand. I will be retiring in Thailand. So I would look into that. They speak english in Thailand.
@@robertrodriguez9329 So far, we can't get married in Vietnam because there's no same-sex marriage. Thailand maybe is an option at some point, at least for retirement, though we're still a bit far away from that.

A cidade onde moro é São Leopoldo, considerada o berço da colonização alemã no sul do país. Tentamos manter as boas tradições alemãs.
Há algumas vantagens na lei para estrangeiros.
Sei que não deve ser uma opção para vocês, existe muito preconceito contra América Latina, mas falei sobre isso só para vocês terem mais uma opção para pensar a respeito, pois com certeza seriam recebidos com muito carinho.
Problemas todos têm onde quer que estejam, mas o que importa é vocês ficarem juntos e felizes ❤

Basically, yes. It's even an EU law that grants equal rights to one's spouse in all EU members states. So, we could also move to Italy, Spain, Denmark, and so on.
Ihr müsst ja nicht hier in Deutschland bleiben Frankreich ist ne gute Option da viele Ausländer dort leben Grade in Paris aber dann Paris ist ein teures pflaster 😢 Italien ist im Moment was Ausländer betrifft eher schwierig.

Yeah, I'm curious to try Italy, Spain, Greece, or so. But first we have to kind of set up a first base in Germany, I guess. Although Thanh can go with me to any EU country, I also need to establish a long-term reason to be there (apartment, maybe a job). I gotta look into that first :D
