- Wooden Penguins
I turned and carved these wooden penguins. I first turned them on the lathe between centers, before turning one end off center. With the band saw I rough cut the beak shape before using the Arbortech mini turbo to refine the shape. After taping the front part with masking tape I painted them with a airbrush. The final step was to finish them with two coats of clear lacquer.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after UA-cam started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. - Навчання та стиль

Carl Jacobson they are beautiful thank you for sharing
Thank you Julie!!
Wow! Gorgeous.
You really have an artists eye to be able to see the design you want and know how to get it out of the piece of wood you are working with. I am not a turner myself, I just enjoy watching those who have the vision and skills to do it well.
Thank you very much!! Thank you for watching too!
Wow!
The lines of the head and beak are elegant and the colors on the neck are stunning 😊
Thank you very much!
I love watching your skill! I always come away more skilled then before
Thank you very much Isaac, I'm glad the videos help!
Great video, the music really gave it that kinda rustic, nostalgic Yule feeling. Really fitting for the season. As for the turning, your prowess with those tools will never cease to amaze me.
Thank you very much Dave!!
I love them. They are so cute.
Thank you Margaret!
love the project, love the outtakes!
Thank you Mark!
Beautiful piece!
Thank you buddy!
Love the project! My main takeaway is the step-by-step for the off-center turning. So obvious when you think about it, yet it never occurred to me when I tried off-center turning and my lathe tried to walk out on me. Thanks for the inspiration, Carl!
Thank you buddy! I'm glad that tip helped.
They are beautiful Carl thank you for sharing
Thank you Julie!
Those are awesome! Great job!

Thank you Steve!!
Wow! When a turner marries mastery of technique with elegance of shape, you get beautiful results. I appreciate that you have begun giving measurements such as beginning blank size, end height and diameter and finished product metrics. Bravo, le maître.
Levis

😊💖🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thank you Jackie!
I love this project! I've watched this many times now. I also enjoy watching you utilize your lathe for almost anything including a carving station, airbrush station, general work station and many other things. Always inspiring! Thanks buddy! This has been my favorite penguin to watch being turned. It is a beautiful piece!
Thank you so much Kieran!
Just like an Olympic athlete you make it look easy. But as a novice wood turner I know it’s not easy. What a beautiful piece of artful work Carl. You inspire me to (want) be better.
Thank you very much, I really appreciate the kind words!!
Take care,
Carl
Really neat project! You have great vision to see the penguin in the wood. I enjoyed the outtakes that show the vision didn't come quite naturally, but in the end, you figured it out!
Lots of fun to watch, thanks Carl!

Thank you very much Phil!

@@CarlJacobson
I had to ask them who happy feet was . After they stop laughing at me they told me it was a movie . Who knew lol .
LMAO......
I always look forward to new videos from you, Carl, and you never disappoint. This is a fantastic idea and, as I don't have the arbortech, I'm going to have a go with wood files.
Thank you very much Kevin! 80 grit really takes it down fast too.
In the UK there is a candy bar called Penguin, the slogan for the ad is " P..P..P..Pick up a Penguin!". Cute little penguin chick I may have to make some of these for Christmas.
Hahaha.....Thank you! I think they would make great Christmas gifts.
Excelente trabajo
¡Gracias!

Hahaha....Thanks Cortland! I would love to see them when your done.
Great job Carl! Very classy look. The baby was a good idea.👍👍
Thank you buddy!
Those came out great. I thought your painting setup on top of your lathe was interesting. I would have never thought of doing that.
Thank you Don! I use the lathe for everything.....It's my paint booth carving station oh ya and I turn on it occasionally :)
Stunning pieces Carl. I've not been able to watch a few of your videos for a while but I'm catching up again slowly
Thank you Ian! I hope you're doing well, we've done a few really fun projects lately.
Hola Carl
Maravilloso este proyecto.
Un gran abrazo desde Colombia.
Felicidades
¡Muchas gracias! ¡Gracias por mirar también!
I'm really glad to see I'm not the only Woodturner to argue with himself and the wood! Nice job Carl.
Try using fine sawdust with the CA glue, saves on glue and looks like a knot?
Hahaha Thanks for the tip too, do you use it with the black too?
Carl Jacobson. No, I always use the very thin clear CA, if it's a split or crack it runs down and sets off, if it's a void then I use sawdust. I keep a bunch of spice jars full of different sawdusts, as I use Abranet to sand, it's easy to collect. Some woods contain a natural chemical which sets the CA with a fizz and heat so eye protection is good, also stand aside when turning the lathe on, otherwise the expression "getting stuck in" will take on a whole new meaning! Take care, and make shavings!
Nice! Nice! Nice!!!!
Thank you!!
Very nice...
Thank you Mike!
Você é um grande artista, obra maravilhosa. Sem contar o fundo musical de muito bom gosto.
Muito obrigado! Minha esposa pega toda a música :)
These are absolutely adorable. I need not show my wife. We will have little marching penguins all over the house.

Hello Carl are you guys ever going to make it to Connecticut in the future?
We don't have anything planded right now, but we're hoping to do a full cross country trip with the mobile shop.
Carl Jacobson there's a great craft show in Guilford CT. Check it out ..
Great project, it turned out really great. Loved the bloopers in the end, that could have been me 100% 😂😂😂
Hahaha Thank you very much!
love them probably the best penguin on lathe that i have seen ! you are an amazing artist !! i love also the painting on the small one !!! and of cause the end of the video lol !!
LOL Thank you so much Annikas!!
Enjoyed and Thumbs Up
Thank you Russell!
Your very welcome
These wood be realy nice peppergrinders.
What a cool idea!!
Excellent. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try a different process first (and a slightly different design of 'penguin') that avoids painting and then come back to your form. It's a really nice design.
Thank you! I'd love to see what you come up with.
very good stuff.
Beautiful! Happy New Turn Year! Greetings of us Holland
Thank you, Happy New Year!!
This is the First video from you that I’ve seen. Subscribed before I finished the video. Really nice work, as well as instruction.
Thank you so much!! This was a fun one! :)
You are on fire Carl!! These turned out so good. Mind blown after watching your last 5 videos in a row, they are all so good!! Loved the outtakes =D
Thank you brother!!
Carl you can make these complicated shapes look easy. I know better. A testament to your skill and talent. Great job. R
Thank you very much Rick!
awesome
Thank you Jason!
I'm in love with the bigger two. If I can't find any to buy, I will have to try to make some. Not a prayer of being as nice as yours, tho.
Thank you! I think they would look great, It's basically a bowling pin with a cone top. You can always cut and carve the head and beak.
Aw really cute little family there. I know a few people who'd like that sort of thing in their house - They'll definitely have to wait though: I've not plucked up the courage to go off-centre yet! :D
Haha..Thank you Matt! You've got to spread your wings and give it a try.....see what I did there LOL
@@CarlJacobson ha ha! Very good, lol. I'll get there eventually.
