    I used compression fittings on my vehicle for a year.Because I couldn't afford to replace all the brake lines.And I never had a single problem but it doesn't mean that somebody else won't

    Scotty Kilmer famously posted a video demonstrating a plumbing compression fitting on brake lines. He had to pull it down because of all the lawsuit threats. Apparently, it's a very controversial subject. We've never used them on a vehicle, however, have used them on farm equipment to varying degrees of success.

      he used the cheap brass type you use to connect your icemaker to your fridge.....they make all steel compressions that can take the pressure and the heat of a brake system....50 years as a mechanic he should have known better..

      I've used brass ones that outlasted vehicles that rusted out. Scotty is like the Matthew Lesko of auto repair though. He's frequently wrong and only good for surface level knowledge for complete newbies.

      It’s simply because the manufacturer of the compression fitting does not want to be liable.

      @@VeritasEtAequitasI've honestly have never had a issue with them. My 1997 ford is still going strong with the brass ones.

      brass ones work just fine, it's all a liability issue.

    I love that copper/nickel brake line.
    I keep a coil of 1/4” the most common size.
    Harbor Freight has the proper bubble flare tool. I think about $20.
    It is not the same flare as for water & gas lines.

    I like the channel because you cover a lot of different subjects in compact videos almost daily. Keep up the good work.

    I think brakes are definitely a part not to cheap out on! I just saw a video of the Mercury Cougar brake failure crash and yikes! It was bad. Not related to this compression fitting, but it shows the importance of brakes.

    That brass comp fitting is gonna be 10 times stronger than the other 30 bad spots on down the line i promise you. If short on funds or need to get get on down the rd, they work great

    Steel Union vs the brass fitting… wouldn’t the steel rust out faster compared to the brass?

    • @Thomass-yc7wm
      @Thomass-yc7wm 8 місяців тому

      Yes, but would you rather have a leak or a blowout? And you have rust as an indicator for how bad the fittings shape is in. Brass would likely blow out giving you 0 braking power, steel would rust and probably start leaking or have a small crack that bursts instead of a fitting, giving you some time to still use the brakes to stop and have it towed.

    Double union only. If you can’t flare it, rip it out. You’re second option is double flare Union 👍

    This was a common fix up here in the rust belt.
    However I wouldn’t think of doing it now.

    I find it interesting the auto parts shops might hand it to you as an option. if that happened, an inexperienced me would have taken it. but I was so concerned with doing it right I watched several videos on dont do that, the further I dug.

      Some states allow it others don’t. The one on this truck has been on there for at least a year. There hasn’t been a problemWith the brakes yet. My thought is because it’s controversial, I’ll take the high road and not take the chance.

      Yeah I went to AutoZone to get the flaring tool and break lines and this is what they have me. It literally said right on it not for use on automobile or motorcycle brake lines. I ended up going to O'Reilly's and they gave me the right stuff to begin with

      Yea but I think they could be used for lower pressure lines like fuel lines (I could be wrong)

    • @toddhale5387
      @toddhale5387 2 роки тому +1

      They sell them at almost every auto parts store and they specifically say theyre for brake lines on the packages.Most are even kept behind the counter right next to their variety of lines for sale.
