The corn cobs in 😢my bin are wonderful for my worms. At first no attention but upon fluffing the right side of the bin last week, I found my cobs getting attention, and cocoons galore 😳 surrounding every cob 😊
@ yes I am happy I was collecting them moving them into a bottle cap with sum fresh pine bark compost but with the cobs there must be hundreds of them, it’s time to let nature do it’s thing without intervention. But I’m fixing to fill this bin a lot quicker then originally anticipated. Considering a wedge ?? But I am not sure I’m committed yet 150 for the pressure treated wood plus the bag 250ish and pipe 60ish to hold the bag up huh that’s a big step plus how do you heat the bag if need be ?? Think my table could hold another tote too maybe just build a wood stand to hold two totes side by side would be just a big a a wedge. Wonder if the brim/edge of the 27 gal tote is strong enough to support the weight ?? My best guess is they are , and that expand my surface area but with out the coat of the wedge bag n pipe ? You seem to like the bin / bucket method. My system seems to favor the right side with warmth by 2deg not sure why I put more coffee grinds & carrot on the left ?? Just seems odd. Oh well sorry for the essay ☺️
I am sometimes envious of those large mammoth and wedge bag systems - and other large systems you see out there. But in the end I really like the containers that I have. Once my bins begin approaching capacity they are so heavy that I can't imagine using containers that are much larger... :)
I gave my euros an entire corn cob this year and they demolished it far faster than my red wigglers. Not a side-by-side experiment, but I think it's a valid observation. Watch out of the police might charge you with distracted worm farming! I peeled a carrot the other day so I could grate it for my salad and ended up putting the peels in my salad instead of the grated carrots… ~ Sandra
I once had an ear of corn that I fed to a worm bin & they did away with it far faster than I had ever seen a corn cob get eaten in a worm bin. It made me wonder what was so different about that corn making it so desirable for the wormies... Yes - I better watch out. I don't need to have the authorities showing up here with a warrant for my arrest over careless worm bin maintenance :)
What size are those yellow buckets ? Some of my worms are in 20 liter buckets, i guess in the US it would be 5 gallon, do you notice any volume in the castings as time goes on ?
As I recall, the imprint on the bottom of the buckets says that their capacity is just a little bit over 5 gallons As far as the reduction of castings volume - I can't say that I notice or perceive it... but I am quite certain that it's happening _(based largely on what I've seen in some of my time-lapse videos :) )_

Woohoo! Great news on the cocoons 👍🏻

watch out using sugar bags and others because one of the layers may be plastic . I used one and fished out the plastic .
Oooo! Good to know - I'll be watching closely. Thanks!
