All three bins look terrific AV! Makes sense to use an easier carbon source for an upcoming harvest. Corn cobs are mostly made up of cellulose (39.1%), hemicellulose (42.1%) and lignin (9.1%), all very complex molecules that take a long time to break down when whole. Actually, I read that lactic acid bacteria (LAB), is one of the primary bacteria that can break these substances down. I know I still have some corn cobs I placed in my bins in early Sep that are still pretty solid. I bet if you had put some pumpkin or melon inside those tubes it would be as empty as my bank account after Christmas. Have a healthy and prosperous New Year! Stay Well!!!!
Despite being a very slow composting material, I once had a corn cob that got gobbled up by the worms within the span of only a few weeks. I'm not sure if there was something with that particular ear of corn that caused it to break down so fast, but it was very interesting to see it vanish so rapidly :)
Well tonight I plan to aerate my bin. I started too on Xmas but ran short of time. Managed to check a few more corn cob & the worms are packing the cobs with cocoons not quite 1for 1 but I would say 10 empty kernel spots to a cocoon 😊 I would have thought the lower humidity would entice them to eat more then mate ?? I have the fan set to allow 80% humidity and managed temp 72-76 but it does rise to 80 when sun is out. Worms are eating a full banana a apple cut in half and a assortment of egg shell and cardboard /paper with a dash of coffee about weekly. Trying to get them to start moving side to side. My depth is about 6-8” where I hope to keep it as the reds don’t like it much deeper 😉also less going down thru the bottom holes into the catch pan sauna thank God I hate lifting this too tote it’s getting heavy 😊was gonna sift a inch of casting out to use with my 1st tray of tomatoes & pepper plant I want to start in a week or two. Need to build a seed starting shelf with bottom warmers and get the top lightings set up on ratcheting straps. So much work to do so little time to do it 😊
Sounds like things are humming along like clockwork in your systems. It's surprising that the dryer conditions are causing worms to mate more - I thought it was just the opposite that causes that :) I agree that heavy bins are a drag....
@ things are good in my bin 😳lots of little worms all over. I would have thought like you dryer conditions would entice eating but every time I uncover them I find 50-75 pairs twisted up ?? I do see lots of action eating but not quite all gone by 7 days by day and 15 I do.
I've given the worms things that are mainly sugar - such, as candies - but I don't think I have ever tried giving them straight sugar. I don't think it would cause problems, or be an issue - it would likely get eaten along with everything else :)

have you ever given these or the red wigglers white sugar? if not, you think its a good idea?
