Loved this! I am so grateful to Vivian for his role in Def Leppard. We the fans are so lucky that Leppard found/chose him, and that they all get along so well, for all of these years. Finding someone to fill that spot couldn't have been easy, Viv had to learn something new and kind of put his style/pride to the side to fit what was needed from him. I feel like he is the reason I, at 29 years old, have gotten to see my favorite band play live 5 times, all within the last ten years, so long after they started. And I am so grateful for every time I get to see them live, they sound incredible and put on such an amazing show to this day. Can't wait for the stadium tour, whenever it happens! Long live rock n roll, and long live Def Leppard!! 🤘

Will look forward to watching this, thanks for doing them. The first time I got to see Vivian live was on the Slang tour in Birmingham UK, standing his side front row aged 15 watching him play his Les Paul :) Terrorvision supported! Still my favourite Def Leppard show I've seen!

Fun video! A little clarification on the Rand guitars. There are 4 different Vivian Rands, and I think Vivian had a hard time recollecting this info during the interview: 1. "Still of the Night Rand" featured in the video and now with a collector. 2. "Is This Love" Rand which is also with the same collector. This one had one-humbucker. 3. "Young Guitar Magazine" Rand which is the one you asked Vivian about and actually different than the one in the "Still of the Night" video. This one is supposedly at a Hard Rock Cafe in Costa Rica but not confirmed. 4. Green Rand. This is the one Vivian mentions he has in storage. Sincerely, Crazy Rand guitar guy. I have videos on these guitars and plan on updating them soon.
Spot on. Great to hear the interview and see him looking fit and healthy, but Viv had a bit of confusion in talking about the Rand days with Whitesnake....the info you posted about them is totally correct.
Takes me back to 1992 when a new chap turned up on stage as the new guitar player in Def Leppard. We had no idea who he was but he came across as such a friendly and happy person. He still got that twinkle in his eye after so many years. Great guy!
As posted Viv was jammed from day one. The loss of the musical, lyrical and on stage persona rock star Steven Maynard "The Riffmaster" Clark was, remains incalculable. When he was using Charvels in the 90's you'd hear the Floyd sound but since he's reverted back to LP's Collen obviously has had to take some [he has taken imo too much] guitar parts due to the effects, which if you watch what is arguably Leppard's greatest concert at their peak in 1988, the 'In The Round, In Your Face Tour, Denver Colorado, 1988', which is on UA-cam, you can clearly see Steve's rig, which by then was a magically put together guitar rig, his epic creme triple pick up LP Custom with Kahler, 2 black beauties, TBird + Kahler, 18 string Razor, one white with Kahler, and he has a triple pick up TB bright red. This concert is not only mind blowing - you clearly get to see the genius play up close. His amazingly deft use of his Kahler, and his Boss delay pedals. The sounds Steve pulled from these Gibsons was imo stunning. You just cannot replicate that today for obvious reasons. Vivian has a seriously kick arse vibrato. Like the one and only 'SpaceAce', who briefly flirted with a Floyd post KISS in 'Frehleys Comet', Ace said in interviews the tremolo made him into a sloppy player as he relied too much on the Floyd and his vibrato suffered. Vivian with no Floyd is imo the same. His 20+ years now of playing with a fixed bridge has only added to his vibrato. He is a delight to watch and like Ace and EVH [different category obviously] Viv wrings every bit he can out of his notes and also if you watch him closely you'll see he bleeds Steve's guitar parts. Personally, I reckon Steve would've been rapt Viv ended up replacing him. The fit, if still criminally underused - s still right in 2021.
@@williambroadstreet3353 Good analysis. Steve should obviously be still alive and delighting us with his creative playing and writing. On another note, TBird? You mean Firebird, right?

I love his playing since Dio's first album. My favourite Vivian guitars are his original black Les Paul and the black charvel with the shield graphics.
Thankyou sooo much for this interview, I'm a huge Vivian fan, and I can't seem to find many interviews with hime. This interview was perfect. It answers alot of the questions I would like to ask. Thanks again,!
Fantastic interview! What a great guy Viv is. So positive and answered all the questions with openness and enthusiasm. Loved all those details, what a great time for music fans 👌😎🙏
Vivian was a huge influence on me when I first started playing guitar back in 1984. Rainbow in the dark, holy diver and last in line were some of the first songs I learned how to play. The solos, well that took a while longer. A lot longer. lol!
Interesting point about the calluses. I've gone through cancer treatment myself and my calluses are not what the used to be, even with everyday practice a couple of hours.
Love Viv. Met him a few times and know a few of the guys from Sweet Savage. Absolutely love that he is back playing his Dio catalogue with Last in Line and releasing Albums with them. Can’t believe my favourite solo of all time (Rainbow in the Dark) was made up and done in one take. Amazing. More of these interviews please! Great job.
WoW! What a Gear/Rig review THIS IS.. The best i've ever seen for detail, great questions and artist left in peace to answer, love the extra pic details coming into shot, Awesome!! Thankyou.. Greetings from a Brit in Greece
Last In Line played a small rock festival here in Scotland and my mate said that they had been a highlight . I looked online and saw Vivian play and was stunned and annoyed at myself for not picking up on him before . He has a great style with riffs and leads which he makes look easy . Appears to be a great guy too in the interviews I’ve watched . 👍

I saw them on their first U.S. tour at the Sunrise Musical Amphitheater in 1981. I was only 12 years old. It was my first concert besides some local keg party bands... They opened for Ozzy and Randy Rhoads. No fucking contest. Rhoads torched the place!!!
@@thelolguy007 Lets just put it this way. I got my first guitar because of seeing Randy live that day. So inspiring and so far ahead of his time. Also I had the ticket to the Diary of a Madman tour. He died in that little plane 2 stops before getting to me. When I found out I lit a skunk bud joint and set the ticket on fire. It only burned half and I kept the other half for many years. I locked myself in my room for a week straight. My mom threatened to have me taken off to rehab. At skool I wrote my first parents note for an absence so they always had my handwriting to compare future notes. I gave Asian flu as the reason for missing 4 days. My mom vouched for me so I wouldn't get expelled. Played the talent show 2wice in my band Ravage. Those were wild days. We lived adult lives as teenagers. So wild, So Free. Things will never be that good again......
@@HappyFoxSuperSTAR and you got that right mate. But fuck it, you lived life while it was there . Different world today. Thanks for sharing the memories - awesome 👍 Rock & Roll Forever🤘
Love Vivian! And I do exactly what he does, especially with rhythm tone - dial it back until it's uncomfortable to play, and then dial in just a little more. For guitar players out there, a lesson I learned is that I play better on slightly lower gain pickups. I prefer a little more tone and a little less gain/compression at the pickup level. I haven't found my floor on pickup gain. Angus is an interesting example, as his pickups are in the 7.X DCR range, which is way down in the vintage range. I'm build a Les Paul clone that will have a 9.X DCR bridge humbucker and a PAF in the neck. I am currently trying to find the bottom of the gain spectrum. My main pickup of choice is either Bill Lawrence L500XL's (which are lower DCR in the high gain realm) or the DiMarzio Satur8 (can't say enough good things about that pickup). I do have some Super D's in some guitars, but even those are 13.X DCR - high gain but not extreme.
Man i love humble down to earth musicians and vivian is just that i ordered a dio hoodie last summer and love it i also loved the dio line up they were so good live vivian was killing it with the one pick up charvel made respect man vivian is a legend great interview guys
Such a legend. Saw Leppard on the stadium tour & saw them back in on pyro mania & hysteria (yes I know he wasn’t on them) but I did see him with dio a few times and white snake and then on adrenalized! And he is a phenomenal player. I really do have so so so much respect for this man, seems like a real down to earth guy and there will always be haters and trolls who will say “he isn’t Steve Clark” well yeah no shit but he is Vivian Fucking Campbell! Hope they can do another one of these some day.
I love Vivian. He was always going to be smashed by the wankers out there when the genius in Steve passed. With respect to classical guitars the differences between the two are night and day. Steve was taught to play classical guitar and this would come into his guitar playing in latter years. Given Steve WAS the primary song writer of Leppard, and when 'Mutt' came along it was Mutt who mined the gold with his brilliance. But having that classical training gave Steve a distinctly special, or as Collen puts in "quirky, Steve was into quirky sounds, he could take something that was quirky and make it commercial". Vivian is a beast of a guitar player, and one of the nicest blokes I have ever seen i interviews. He still is honest and has no issue whatsoever in saying what is fact "90% of what we play Steve left us"...and "I still cannot play GoW". It for me and I suspect many others is extremely annoying that Phil has taken over so many of Steve's guitar parts. For example the intro and ride out solo-riffing to 'Photograph'. I have read Viv's somewhat pissed off, do not know if this is true, but if it is I agree with Viv 100% To see Vivian Campbell let loose, on his own steam is a delight, he is imo one of the great guitarists from the 80's. Dio and he both needed each other, and they created magic. Now that it seems he's beaten cancer I hope we get to see him again. Leppard are a unique hard rock band in terms of they and only a handful of other bands still use their own live vocals. In other words you get 100%% rock n roll. No lip lyncing, no Crue like kabuki. Just raw music.

The story about Vivian laying down the solo to Rainbow In The Dark is amazing. That is probably in the top 5 greatest heavy metal solos of all time, and to hear that it was a spontaneous effort makes it even more special.
Rory Gallagher and Mark Bolin. Those are pretty cool cats to look up to and emulate. In the guitar world I inhabit, the obvious fella's at the top need little introduction, Van Halen, Rhoads and Lynch. All well and good, but it has occured to me over the last few years that Vivian Campbell, Andy Laroque and Jake E Lee were probably just as important to the particular sound I love. Vito Bratta and Nuno Bettencourt are important as well. It's not so much about the technicality at some point, it is about the fine art of phrasing and execution. So many newer players on youtube are absolutely pushing the bounds of what anyone thought was possible, and good for them, but I still study and revere the kings of the 80's rock. It is what floats my boat, what a thrill to be able to catch these awesome video's about or featuring guy's like Viv. LAST IN LINE is a gift from the metal gods, I would love the opportunity to go see them live. This shit has to end some day.
Viv fan since he first started with Dio. Seen him live in concert in New Haven CT. Grew up watching and listening since then. Recently seen him in Milford CT ...so it was a almost a 40 year difference... his guitar solos and music was as flawless as it was when I first seen him. Might of been 1981-2-3 era. I think Dio played with Twisted Sister. Both great bands back then. Had front row at the rail on the left side facing the stage where Viv jammed. This guy is WAY under rated ... he’s my top guy. Also enjoyed listening to another under rated guy ... Jake E Lee was amazing also.
Thank you guys sobvery much for doing this! And for letting the man TALK, and boy did he ever...fantastic, fantastic. The best Viv interview I've ever seen. I don't know why but the whole band interview really well...this is my fave though.

Who dont know Vivian at that time?
Vivian is the real deal, great guitarist and class act . I'm a big fan

Great to see Viv looking so well
VC Is Iconic One Of My Favorite Guitarists Great interview ..
I'm happy to see Vivian doing well. I grew up listening to him since Dio.
Fantastic interview! What a great guy Viv is. So positive and answered all the questions with openness and enthusiasm. Loved all those details, what a great time for music fans 👌😎🙏
Awesome job guys!!
Such a humble talented guy!
Thanks James!
Vivian rules 🤘🤘
What a great interview....Vivian is so open and genuine.
Thank you for this
Thank J 🤘🏻
It’s a Digitech GSP-21 multi FX which is mentioned by Viv in Guitarist magazine. The GSP-21 was also available in floor format as the Digitech RP-1.
Vivian was a huge influence on me when I first started playing guitar back in 1984. Rainbow in the dark, holy diver and last in line were some of the first songs I learned how to play. The solos, well that took a while longer. A lot longer. lol!
Great interview with one of the great guitarists. Really appreciate Vivian and you guys sharing this time with us. Thank you...
Interesting point about the calluses. I've gone through cancer treatment myself and my calluses are not what the used to be, even with everyday practice a couple of hours.
Excellent interview, thank you for sharing!
That was a great interview and history lesson. Thanks!
Rainbow in the Dark is a wonderful song and that solo is so memorable. 1 take.....freaking amazing.
MY FAVE era is Dio and Riverdogs......I started playing guitar because of Vivian and listening to Heaven and Hell....
@MikeGuitars. I couldn't agree more. I loved Viv with the Riverdogs. Everything about the Riverdogs was great, guitars songwriting, vocal and harmony!
@@davidyergensen4509 yeah man...the song Big House is my fave....great stuff
@@isMike999 , that is a good one. My favorite song is the acoustic version Pennsylvania, when they played it on a radio station.
Saw Vivian in 82/83 with Dio. Saw him a couple years later with Whitesnake. Wish I could see him again.
Can't wait to see this one! I loved Vivian's story about how he started playing the guitar 😍

Great great interview!!! So much details, and Vivian is such a nice guy.
Viv has been a hero of mine since I first saw him live with Dio on the Sacred Heart tour back when I was a teen. Great interview guys!

WTF are you talking about dood???
Craig fuckin Goldie played on the Sacred Heart tour. Campbell was already fired. I SAW the show at the West Palm Auditorium/Savatage was the opener with Hall of the mountain king. Get your years straight stoner!!!
Craig didn't join the band until 3/86...I saw them in 85.
Just a lovely guy and interesting. Had to stop and go listen to rainbow in the dark solo after Viv's story - even more epic. Klass.
He's a class act
Vivian Campbell is respected and revered in the Randall amplifier community as well!
What a great interview, I enjoyed every second of it. Vivian is fantastic!
Viv is lookin healthy and of course adorable like always! I wish I was alive back when he was in Dio and earlier in DL days when Steve was still with us. I was born in the wrong era lol. I'm a huge DL fan and LIL.....can't wait for next tour!! Love you DL!! Love you Viv!! 🤘Long live ROCK!!

Cool . Vivian A Legend.
I *NEVER* watch videos that are more than 10 or 15 minutes long.

But an hour & a half with Viv? Yeah - cool - bring it on... :)
Viv is simply amazing💞

Great interview covering his career.
Vivian is my favorite Rock/Metal guitarist ever. Dio Holy diver lead work inspired me to buy my 1st les paul. Thank you so much for this interview. Thanks for being a great and classic guitarist. Great and in depth interview too.

Luv ya, Viv! My favourite guitar player. A great muscian, too underrated. Lorenzo from Italy
I grew up on Dio stuff, when Dio came out in 1983 that album blew me away guitar wise. Viv's playing was insane. Kudos to Jason's editing though, didn't keep us with the same view.

He’s right - the vocals in Leppard these days are quality. Last time I saw them in Dublin (3 years ago?) they sounded great. Awesome stuff 👏👏👏👌
I saw them in Charlotte they still got it!
I saw them on their first U.S. tour at the Sunrise Musical Amphitheater in 1981. I was only 12 years old. It was my first concert besides some local keg party bands...
They opened for Ozzy and Randy Rhoads. No fucking contest. Rhoads torched the place!!!
@@HappyFoxSuperSTAR I’d imagine he did. That was very cool to see 👍
@@thelolguy007 Lets just put it this way.
The Digitech rack unit to which Viv is referring is, I believe, a Digitech GSP 21.
Man i love humble down to earth musicians and vivian is just that i ordered a dio hoodie last summer and love it i also loved the dio line up they were so good live vivian was killing it with the one pick up charvel made respect man vivian is a legend great interview guys
After all: just a simple kind person!
I'd like to have him as a friend.
Great interview, lads!
Thanks from Sweden! 🎙
Bloody hell brilliant i had a calsbro all clean 50 watt brilliant for pedals and cheap.. axe and Moore's definitely my favourite guitar hero 🤘🤘
I have read Viv's somewhat pissed off, do not know if this is true, but if it is I agree with Viv 100%
To see Vivian Campbell let loose, on his own steam is a delight, he is imo one of the great guitarists from the 80's.
Thank you for this video.🎼🎤🎸🎵🥁

Great interview guys - pretty rare that you can get a guy to go from metal -> AOR and be equally great at both.
I remember seeing Vivian at the Dallas guitar show post Dio. He was by himself, walking the stalls. He blended in with crowd. I think I was the only one stalking him. :) I presume that was the yr he met Buddy Blaze.
Vivian and Randy were the kings of 80's metal.
Viv !!!

The story about Vivian laying down the solo to Rainbow In The Dark is amazing. That is probably in the top 5 greatest heavy metal solos of all time, and to hear that it was a spontaneous effort makes it even more special.
Wow, that was incredible! Thank you all for bringing that for us to enjoy.
Met Vivian at Namm. Nice guy. I gotta go back and listen to the Riverdogs album
Man imagine Vivian pulling out a classic Kramer and Phil playing a his OG destroyer on a Def Leppard gig
Thank you
