Bontas may very well be the most underrated Romanian gymnast ever! I loved her whip-full and I would have given her the gold alone at 91 Worlds FX Finals. That layout full-in took guts and she did it PERFECTLY! And then history and Nelli Kim robbed her from having it named for her in the CoP (IIRC).
Little tidbit. Bonita’s and Belu argued at the 91 worlds in event finals. She just threw the layout fullin against his wishes. She is a beast. Belu didn’t know she was saying screw you and did it. Nicest skill I’ve seen. IMO….Layout fullin is harder then full out. You need great awareness to do both but full out gives you a bigger lift on takeoff.
amazing! they were so graceful at the floor routine, you could still see the ballet side of gymnastics, now they must have more difficult skills but when it comes to follow the music and dancing they move like robots. Today gymnastics are more about power and velocity wich is not bad because they can do things that were almost unthinkable 20 years ago, but the "artistic" side of the sport is being forgotten... of course i believe its not the gymnasts fault, theres just something missing :(
I think it’s been forgotten thanks to the likes of Nelli Kim. The FIG has been slowly killing the artistry since the 1990s and then it got so bad by Athens and then worse and worse.
@@SDoesNotKnow For me it was the ascension of Bruno Grandi to presidency in 1997 (who eliminated compulsories); the retirement of Jackie Fie in 2004 (who was the president of WTC and had strived to uphold these values - ua-cam.com/video/fTiA59FxN-g/v-deo.html), the ascension of Nelli Kim (who became Jackie Fie's successor as president of the WTC); the 'Belu' Romanian era (1997-04) which popularised the cheap tactic doing the bare minimum to win and now the American era, whereby the same tactic is being employed but just from the opposite side of the same coin. However in 2017-21 there were several Americans who appeared to be combatting this trend (Morgan Hurd; Riley McCusker; Maile O'Keefe; Kara Earker; Leanne Wong and of course Sunisa Lee) so it will be interesting to see where the sport goes in 2022-24.
@@MD-722 Belu took over after the revolution so by this time was already in charge of the women's team. He just followed the code of the time and so do Americans. If there's no compensation for originality, why take the risk? Back at Bontas times, innovation was appreciated, but judging was dubious too. A double yurchenko was worth the same as a FTY, and the name of the gymnast really counted on the scoring.
as u can see she got a 10 - cristina went on to the olympic games in 1992 barcelona - she now has a gymnastic club in canada, married and has 1 boy and one girl
@bik1050 I disagree, I think Yang Yilin is more artistic. Liukin doesn't give enough passion to her movements (especially on floor) to be counted artistic in my books.
Romanian gymnasts were so often undermined and sabotaged by politics and heartless, petty interests. Their true value was always gold. Sadly, Romanian gymnastics slipped under the radar but for God's sake, they need to do something to revive it back to its original glory.
Romanian gymnasts were frequently savagely verbally abused, mistreated and grossly overworked in the name of Olympic glory for Romania. Octavian Belu deserves a special place in a deep, dark hell pit.
I was at these Worlds and it was amazing!! The gymnasts today could learn a lot from these types of routines. Rules/Scoring changes have ruined modern gymnastics in my opinion. Teams don't compete as a whole.......AA scores only count at the time of the AA instead of throughout the competition.............what a mess!!
The gymnasts of today don’t have to deal with biased scoring and having to fit into a specific body shape mold. They are allowed to look like actual athletes, rather than little porcelain dolls who have been starved and mistreated. I’ll take today over yesteryear any day of the week. In terms of scoring, the AA competition should NEVER factor qualifying scores. No other sport does that, and gymnastics shouldn’t either. A finals competition should be all about how the athletes perform DURING finals.
yang was a good gymnast but she was typical..she was the textbook never changing chinese gymnast...to me while others thought she was just amazing..all of her routines reminded me of Pang Pang(2006) or Nan(2004)...her floor was 3 twist and a double pike and there are gymnast now that follow the same like Tan Sixin. Liukin's routines were bold and she showed amazing passion not taught by Adriana Pop. Cheng Fei, Deng, and Jiang were dynmanic and artistic and passonate more than Yilin
Not sure how you got the nerve to write such a lame comment about this amazing performance. Please post a link so we may see an example of your performance which should of course, exceed Cristina's. Smh...
@@crystalstarfestival4100the person in question has EVERY right to state this, and is absolutely correct. Just like Milo in 1992 with visible errors (especially the hop on landing that first tumbling pass) , the step forward demonstrated a lack of complete control and should have been factored into the score. It’s yet another demonstration of how biased towards the Romanians and Soviets the judging was in those days.
A nice example of how the step back lunge should be a great display of control and add grace and flourish to a routine!!

Did only Japan broadcast Gymnastics in the 80s or something?!
Excellent floor worker

Artistry is interpretive. IT’s gymnastics, not just ballet or dance class.
@VulturulNegru93 She's from Nadia's hometown of Onesti, and always reminded me of Nadia, both in style and body type--could be something in the water!
as u can see she got a 10 - cristina went on to the olympic games in 1992 barcelona - she now has a gymnastic club in canada, married and has 1 boy and one girl
She was my first coach:)
The good old days of gymnastics. I miss it.
this is an amazing floor routine. imo she and Marinescu where the last romanian gymnasts who could dance unlike Gogean and Milo.
The EQUIPMENT has been improved dramatically though in the last 20-23 years though! have you seen the bounce on the floor springs for example !?! !!!
The 10 is well deserved! 👍👍👍
she is maybe best tumbler ever
I agree. I would put her up against Shawn Johnson or Cheng Fei any day.

Baby Bontas. Power for days.
She has a terrific tumble, therefore a great specialist on floor.
I think the best acrobatics between 1989 and 1991-92
Amazing!
@cherylannemason its funny you say she reminds you of nadia, nadia actually coached cristina on some events
To be honest, as soon as I hear the japanese commentary drowning out the music, I switch off. The same with skating and other sports.
Super! Cristina.Felicitari !❤❤
the best simple the best

she's actually trying to teach her daughter, Elissa, to do that
The first pass she stepped forward. It was underrotated . Not sure how she got a ten.
