@@Vonias My pleasure. First got the idea from remarks by both hosts about how great the music was in Episode 1.

This show seems so light hearted and then heartbreakers like this come along.

I want to say, this was the episode that really hooked me, all those years ago. Like, I still remember playing Gameboy color Super Mario Brothers in the parents bedroom watching this, all those years ago.

I'll totally give you all this episode. if this hooked you I'm never gonna say a negative cause god damn this show has so many hooks before the halfway point of this show. I got hooked episode 2 when it was on Toonami and I was about 10 so I can't ever hate on people living this show later on :)

It’s crazy that you got to experience this episode during that era, so lucky! I’m barley watching this series at 25 (I was born when this series came out)

This show is so fantastic. Real stakes, great characters... makes for a lot of joy, and a lot of heartbreak.
    See you space cowboy...

Rico gave Spike the flower not only because he knew Spike could defend himself, but he knew Spike was a good person because he stopped the hijacking of the passenger shuttle at the beginning; he could have just not risked his life and played along until the police sorted it out, but he decided to intervene for the sake of everyone else. Spike often acts aloof and like he doesn't care, but his actions betray that act, and he frequently gives up on money (AKA his own comfort and happiness) for good people who need it more

One of my favorite episodes... They make you fall in love with this character so quickly and then they snatch him away. A lot of the show deals with death in such a intimate way... it's kind of a theme :X

Another beloved western-friendly short-run (2 seasons) adult anime with a good dub (if not originally English in the first place) that you might not have seen is "The Big O." This is a _Batman with giant robots meets genetic engineering and metaphysics_ kind of thing.

If someone hasn't said it yet, please watch the movie between episodes 22 & 23. The movie came out after the series, but takes place during the series. Hope you enjoy it.

When it comes to a sense of nostalgia from the show, I feel like a big part of that is how... anchored it is in the... how to put it... detritus of the past. Like, it is a futuristic setting in that it has easy access to space ships, holograms, hyperspace lanes, and all of that, but it is one where humans are still VERY much human, even in the advanced future setting. Like, even within a pressure dome on an asteroid, people still build fairly simple structures with as inexpensive of materials as they can get away with, which just feels... very true to humanity. The dome is expensive, but that doesn't mean that everything inside must be made with equally elevated materials. Like, even in a city like Seattle where I live, with some amazing skyscrapers, you have a lot of low-rise buildings just outside of the central core that are in no way shiny and new. Heck, even from I-5, with a backdrop of the downtown core, right along the edge of the freeway, there are old, dingy buildings.
It's something that you really get in William Gibson's books - the Neuromancer trilogy in particular. It's this... viscerally present past that the future tech is built on top of. One of the characters that is present throughout the series is the owner of what could (if you were being generous) call an antique shop. Heck, one of the major locations on one of the space stations was built by a man from Earth and is packed to the gills with artifacts from Earth as one of its defining features. Even as part of a station that is at the cutting edge of advanced futuristic tech in the setting, this one private family structure is packed with the detritus of the past. One of the Japanese characters in the series calls it "gomi." Part of the reason I have always had trouble connecting with the Star Trek movies is that it is too... unnaturally pristine of a future society. Not that it has to be crime-ridden, or decrepit, just that... it feels sterilized in the way everything is presented. Like, humanity collectively agreed to just purge all older ways of doing things, and upgrade to the high-tech lifestyle en-masse, leaving little of the history to be seen. Unfair, I know, but it's kind of where I come down on the matter.
Either way, there is something very human about all of that, and I love the vibe that it gives the whole series. It feels like it is a future that, as a modern human, you wouldn't be irrevocably lost in. Where you can see that as much as the big-ticket things change, the little quirks of humanity really do stay the same.

This is such a great show because it doesn't really have much of a main storyline and just has these single serving stories. It's built upon the strength of It's characters and writing.

“Waltz for Venus” - This refers to the genre of music, the dance, and most importantly the amazing Bill Evans record and song “Waltz for Debby.” Also the second rock from the sun.

This is one of the worst episodes imo. Mostly because the weird relationship between Spike and the new guy at the end of the episode. It feels out of nowhere.
