Midas' affordable 500 series eq vs. Logic's basic channel eq... Both considered "utility" rather than "vibe" eq..
I have no affiliation with, nor have I been compensated by anybody. I own all this gear and did this video for my own enlightenment, and amusement. Sharing with UA-cam because there are not enough videos like this on UA-cam.
Thanks for checking this vid out.
    NOTES:
I was tracking a 12 string acoustic guitar the other day and knew I was going to EQ it so it would sit in the background of a busy mix, so I threw the Logic eq on it while having the thought "I should see if the Midas can give me anything close to the Logic?" .
So a couple of days later I had time to do this test... and figured to make it more useful, I put a quick BASS DI track through the same test.
Fun, illuminating. SPOILER ALERT: They're both cool and work... I found the Midas sat further back in a good way, the Logic was a touch more forward and overall... hmm, possibly grainy? The Midas has a roundness, but that's not to say both didn't have a little bit of trouble handling the highest end of the 12 string... which was recorded with a pair of AT4033a's. I find that those mics are occasionally a touch strident or less pleasing at the top.. despite being a great all-around mic that I love.
Anyway, thanks for checking these videos out.
    -Marty
PS. Bass went through a Black Lion Bluey between the DI/Preamp and the convertor.

Nice test. And I love my 512s. And really - bang for buck - the Midas line of 500 series modules are stellar. My 502 preamps add boost and punch while retaining clarity (tx also available) and the 512 eq allows for precise frequency manipulation with overlapping bands, adjustable Q and frequency sweep. Go subtle or extreme - like you demonstrated - just having it in the signal chain imparts depth and brings an otherwise flat sounding track to life, even when set to flat. I highly recommend the Midas series of 500 series modules.

      100%
I have to control the urge to just buy a big old Midas desk and be done with it. Not that it wouldn't be more than awesome... but so much harder to move around than some 500 series racks!
Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I think I have a vid going up with more Midas EQ involvement.

You seem to be the only person i can find who did decent tests with this eq. To my ears it sounds amazing. Even doing nothing it improved the sound a lot. Now i want some. The software eq sounded horrible to me.
I wonder how the midas would stack against a neve 1073 eq

Thanks! I did a test with the Midas vs. Trident 80b which was fun and I think came out good. I have some Chameleon Labs 560eq which are supposed to be NEVE 73 style (and they sound awesome regardless, certainly have the vibe). I might have done one where I compared the 560 to Logic 1073 eq too? I don’t remember if I actually made a vid or just tested on my own… either way, the CL totally sounded wayyy in the ballpark (and better).
I should do a Midas v. CL vid.
Ultimately the Midas IS cleaner … in my book. Which is fine with me.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Much appreciated!

I had a Midas Console for over 10 years a Legend 3000 in my studio and it had the best console EQ I have ever heard. It was better than SSL, Soundcraft, ATI, API, and MCI desks I had owned before or after. The Mic preamps were really good and the clarity of the entire console was just great but a lightning storm took out the desk and there were so few of these desk made since the Heritage series was more popular that fixing it was very problematic. So I found an ATI paragon 2 desk which has API mic preamps and a full 4 band EQ channel strip with dynamics. Basically its a SSL with API parts inside but even the ATI paragon EQ couldn't get close to the Midas I used previously!!

You're not helping me resist getting back into Midas console ownership! Haha.
But seriously. Someday the right now will pop up nearby and...

@@SHUTUPANDRECORDYea a Nice Heritage or XL4 model for a couple Grand in good working condition that came from a church or theater would be a good deal to find. They pop up all the time in Nashville the bigger cities but most of those have been on the road with sound companies and have a bot more wear and tear. If I would have bought a Heritage I could have found parts easily for my desk but I bought the Legend 3000 and from what I found out only around 1200 of them were ever made. So parts will be nearly impossible to find. So I'm just going to rack up a few channels to have them around since the storm only killed the buss section of the console so I can pull a few channels to use! Cheers!!

Yeah me too. I honestly didn't think it would be as cool as I found it. There's something intangible, like a dimension or depth to the overall sound that isn't there with the Logic. Logic sounds great but is somehow a "flatter" image. It's really fun to take a Logic preset and then tweak the outboard gear to match... great way to learn the gear and it's abilities. I'd try Reverb. They come up reasonably priced fairly regularly. Not so sure about the Revive Audio Modified one that's up currently, but the Revive stuff I do own is awesome so Im guessing this would be too. Thanks for watching and the comment! -Marty
