The thing about Charles is that he doesn't do this stuff for ratings... he's just brutally honest and never backs down to backlash. That's what makes him so good because he's so honest. Lot's of NBA players are soft and can't take the criticism.

@@liamengram6326 , Charles career and knowledge of basketball is not lessened just because he doesn't have a ring. Players like Allen Iverson and Reggie Miller don't have rings but their skill and knowledge stand for themselves. There are a lot of benchwarmers (and I don't mean contributing support players) who have rings just because they were lucky to be on the team that won.

Barkley is probably a top 25 player of all-time. He was an absolute animal back in his day

  • @whimsofmim
    @whimsofmim 2 роки тому +21

The Round Mound of Rebound. He was fierce. A lot of people don't realize, he was shorter than most guards, but could physically dominate men much bigger than him. He was incredibly athletic, explosive, and powerful. His trademark was grabbing a rebound on one end of the court and leading a fastbreak down the court dribbling coast to coast, either dishing it off adeptly or more often scoring with a monster two handed slam. It was thrilling to see a big man able to handle the ball like he could (and he was a good passer too for a power forward).
To understand just how great Barkley was, during his first season with the Suns (when they made it to the finals versus Michael Jordan's Bulls), "Sir Charles" won league MVP (something Jordan "took personal"). He was that good that season (and the Suns were too), that he was considered the league MVP during a period when Jordan was absolutely dominant.... Jordan, The GOAT was arguably in his prime, and Sir Charles managed to win MVP. The Suns were extremely close that year to beating the Bulls too. It ended in 6 games but that 6th game came down to a game-ending 3. The Bulls probably would have won the Series anyway, but Barkley played his heart out. Like many other great teams, Jordan and the Bulls are a big reason Barkley doesn't have at least one ring, possibly 2-3. Shaq gives him grief about not having a ring, but in all honesty, even Shaq would admit Charles Barkley was one of the best all-time power forwards, and Shaq played against a dominant Barkley so he knows first hand what a handful Barkley was.
Barkley was maybe 6'4", but out-rebounding 7 foot centers and forwards that were 6'10"+ (look at how big Karl Malone was, and strong... and Chuck could sometimes manhandle a guy like that)... he was too strong for his size. Very physical, gritty, smart player. His high basketball IQ is often overlooked. One of the best power forwards for sure.
In today's league, a prime Barkley would be almost unstoppable. He had a great mid-range game, excellent post player, dominant rebounder, could be a decent banger on defense, he was a good free-throw shooter too (80%+, which is great for a "big man" who earns a lot of trips to the free throw line).... But, ultimately, his toughness and tenacity is what made him great. It's why he is the way he is as a commentator. Barkley never backed down from anything, for better or worse, and you could almost always admire him as a player because when he brought it, he brought everything he had and then some.
The hilarious thing about Charles Oakley is he wore the same number as Barkley (#34), was a very physical player, so I think there is a strange element of the two hating each other because of their similarities. Barkley got into it with players, but you could tell there really was bad blood between him and Oakley. They always seemed to have some kind of issue in a game, just the result of physical play and hate, but for stuff to pop off like that in a preseason game is hilarious. Normally guys aren't totally going full-tilt in preseason games. That was a pretty cheap take down by Oakley too, which is part of why Barkley hated him.

Met Barkley a couple of times. He went to Auburn University(college in Alabama) and I am a fan of the University of Alabama sports teams, especially football. Those two teams are rivals and they play a football game every year called the Iron Bowl. He joked around with me about the upcoming Iron Bowl and we made a joke bet for one dollar on who would win the game. It was a joke because no matter what happened, we would likely never see each other again. My team won that year and I joked with friends about Chuck owing me a dollar. Fast forward a couple of years and I feel a tap on my shoulder, turn around and he hands me a dollar bill. I am basically a nobody, just some random dude he met once, for like 10 minutes, yet he saw me, remembered me and the offhand bet we made. Before he let it go, he said "double or nothing in this year?", to which I replied, "nah, will just cash out my chips now". My team lost that year in an upset, of course I haven't run into him again in a decade.

    1) In Charles' defense, he wasn't actually trying to spit on the kid. Some fan kept calling him the N Word throughout the game and the last time the guy got up to do it, Chuck spat at him, but missed. Still not a good look but, you know, context.

I am a born and bred New Yorker, and a diehard Knicks fan, but every once in a while, you get a Jordan or a Barkley, or a Shaq and they transcend team or hometown loyalty. Why are you just blatantly lying, old head basketball fans have to be the worst subgroup of NBA fans ever lmao

RFM Mike It’s not personal anymore with the players, it’s one big love fest. No rivalries like Barkley Vs Oakley or Bird vs Laimbeer etc. The players are more talented across the board in this era, but the lack of intensity in the games has become a joke. It’s just a fact

@@ryanc9888 Yes because Barkley and MJ being best friends and playing golf damn near every day while playing each other in the finals was not a "love fest"

The NBA... one of the most disrespectful sports organizations in sports.. "give me more money" ok you have more money. "now i want more money" ok now you have more money.. "Im oppressed making 20 million a season" ok, here is some more money. "30 million and im still being held back, its not fair" ok here is some more money. "the fans are mad at us and its their fault" ok, give you more money. i mean how much money is it going to take to these men happy playing a game? meanwhile a school teacher makes 38k a year and has to worry about school shooters or violent students.

@@cade.97 no points... how about the fact that the people teaching your children are paid dirt... you know, the people that get the next generation ready for the outside world. celebs protected by security, guns, etc etc. but teachers are treated like trash and have to go to a building that is unprotected to teach and watch over the things that are most precious to us. my point is, we have our priorities backwards. and liking your own comment or hashtags isnt going to fix it.

@@outworlddragoon Actually, I'm the one who liked his comment because you're a rambling buffoon. I don't know a single supermax NBA player complaining that they don't make enough money. If anyone complains, it's not because they aren't making enough in general. It's probably because they aren't making enough compared to other players. If you're only making $12 million a year, but there are players making $20 million a year who are nowhere near as good as you, then yeah. You would renegotiate your contract or switch to a team willing to pay you more. That's not claiming oppression, or whatever unrelated buzzword you tried to paint it as in your nonsensical schizo post. That's finding a new job when your employer doesn't want to pay you what you're worth.
And just like every other job, NBA players are getting paid based on the value they bring. The NBA can afford to pay their players 10s of millions because they collectively bring in billions. That's how almost every job in America works. Public school teachers are paid by the government. If you want them to make more, write a letter to you local congressman or some shit. Last I checked, Adam Silver doesn't decide the federal budget.

@@MergatroidS its so hilarious to get an emotional response from a comment on a video that you will forget it existed 2 days from now. the people vote and make the changes and so far the people care more about sports than they do their own neighborhoods or society. care more about a scoreboard, than the crime. i guess its easy to not care and just believe it doesnt exist. The billions you talk about, are then funneled though a no profit organization and go everywhere except helping the poor, the sick, the veterans, the true heroes. have fun in denial and making excuses for bad behavior

Tired of this "He doesn't have a ring" bullshit!
Draymond wouldn't have a ring if not for being fortunate enough to play with 2 generational talents.
Even at 59 years old, Chuck would whoop Draymond!😁

In all fairness the Cavs didnt support LBJ they way they should have the first time around. There were alot of things he asked of the front office that he didn't get. Its part of the reason why he went to Miami imo
