After all these years - I start to love this song and performance even more. Because this is exactly the meaning of this beautiful song: Blijf zoals je bent. Loving you as you are... and not because you know how to perfectly hit that high note at the end. This one is for real... this song is about being true and honest: without any reservations, unconditionally.
Justine sang almost perfectly, great and emotional the entire song. It's really a pity because of the last note, but it happens. 😕 Support for a great singer!
Amazing song! I think she had a cold because she can definitely sing this high note. Unfortunately not on the most important performance of her career :-( Nevertheless one of Netherlands's best ESC songs!
People... this bad note at the end had nothing to do with the bad result... The votes were casted only by jury and the jury only avaluates the specific performance of the jury show... For all we know Justine hitted that note perfectly and still got that result
Sorry to say but you are completely wrong on this. Juries evaluated the live show performance up until televoting was introduced in 1997/98. Some countries continued with juries for a few more years,(evaluating the live show performance) until their telecoms systems could cope with televoting. It was only when juries got involved again about a decade ago that they evaluated the rehearsal performance with the so called Jury Finals.
Having been on a jury, as well as knowing several other jurors over the years, plus our national spokesperson for many years, as well as working for the EBU, I know what I am talking about.
Gordon Roxburgh When I was on in 1995, we saw the afternoon dress, but didn't get to cast our vote (each song out of ten) until the evening show, and the. after each song - no chance to go back and change our scores!
So many performers seem to have had issues that year, with their voices cracking due to overstraining or a cold (Switzerland is no tropical country!). Perhaps that's what had helped Riva and Yugoslavia get their victory, aside from being surrounded by an ocean of ballads.
1989 Eurovision was one of the weakest years in my opinion. I struggle to find even 5 songs that I like. This song stood out amongst all other entries and it should have won by a mile. Couldn’t figure out why it didn’t do well?? Yes, the last note could have sung better but her overall performance was still very strong.
i honestly like this year a lot compared to other years in the 80s, but i do think compared to recent years it is pretty weak (but most of the contests out of the 70s and 80s are). i think this song and "nacida para amar" are the clear standouts.
Underrated song and performance.
Simply stunning, so beautiful, she nailed it!
One of so many great entries in Dutch!
Love from Switzerland
I was listening on Spotify to the version recorded. Here it is 100% better with the orchestra, what a beautiful arrangement
Een van Nederland se beste en mooiste liedjies ooit!
'89 was one of the golden years at Eurovision, so many treasure's for our delight that night. This was one of my 7, for the title.🎉🎉🎉❤❤
Beautiful song and the orchestra is a plus here, like in so many entries
One of the best Dutch entries ever and that she sings in Dutch makes it even better.

And that it is in Dutch makes it even better
Indeed / Inderdaad
Geweldig liedje. Still listening to it in 2017.
The final note's not disastrous at all!
Yes, you're right.
I understand a little bit of Dutch and this is very sweet- but that note at the end LMAO! :D Poor Justine... :)

At that time, juries evaluated the live show! It wasn't until they were reintroduced (in 2009-2011) that they evaluated rehearsals...

Back then the individual judges gave songs a mark out of 10 instead of doing a full ranking so they didn't need as much time to vote

Still listening to it in 2022.

Deserved 2 place
Красиво поет
Brilliant song but you can see her disappointment at the end when she didn't quite reach that last note one of Netherlands best ever entries .
Whay a pitty last note!!!
So many performers seem to have had issues that year, with their voices cracking due to overstraining or a cold (Switzerland is no tropical country!). Perhaps that's what had helped Riva and Yugoslavia get their victory, aside from being surrounded by an ocean of ballads.
And national languages also...
