    This is the point where most builders go mono shock. I can't wait to see what you do with the shock mounts. Keep up the great work. "Top"

      Yeah it would definitely be an easy 'temporary' option.

    I like the seat and tank setup, there is nice symmetry from above. You talked about painting the tank, but if it was left as is, the stripes would flow well with a red frame. Looking forward to the next step.

      Thanks, we'll see what I decide with the colours. ;)

  • @AnAngryPossom

    One thing you'll want to do when you start figuring out the mounting point for the shocks is make sure that they won't bind on the frame under full compression. The last thing you want is for the frame to act like bump stops causing the rear end to suddenly stop moving, it could make for a pretty sketchy ride. You could fix this by adding a gusset between the frame and your rear hoop that has the mounting points. This would help strengthening that area and also give the shocks close to their original mounting point so that their travel is close to the original geometry of the back end.

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  7 років тому +2

      Yeah definitely something worth thinking about, I'll use the original mounts, and although I'll be putting them lower down I'm using slightly smaller shocks than the original so that the drive shaft won't be on such an unnatural angle. thanks

    Sweet! Thanks for sharing your thought process and not speeding through the build. The top view of the tank and seat looks really tight (that is a positive reflection). I'm going to be very interested to see how you tie in that rear shock so it doesn't look like an erector-set, that bracket is going to be important. Good going and keep up your insightful videos.
    Cheers, Chris

    as for the completely covered type of seats, I think the Motolana seats look good. people use them a lot on Virago and SR400 builds. it's a copy of an other seat but I forgot who makes it.

    Is there an updated video with it finished?? It’s 2:30am, just came in from working on the 500 I’m building, wish I could post a pic! I got lucky and found a gl500 so it was already mono shock, I’ve literally just been fitting that same seat, I found it fit a lot better by pulling the vinyl back and trimming the corners of the seat frame where it meets the tank, round both sides off with the tank then restaple it back down, fits so nice now

    Offtopic question: What are the major differences between the XV1100 and XV750 Viragos, apart from the engine? I mean, in structural terms.

    I love the lines on this frame mod, and want to exactly duplicate the hoop and new upper shock mount you've done. I think the proportions of that seat and tank are spot on. I'm also not a fan of the CX500 upswept frame with dcafe seat. My question which seems to have been asked before, is where did you buy the 270mm x 230mm hoop? Did you use all that length when done? I have found one on ebay which is 255mm long but I don't know if that will suffice.

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  5 років тому

      Thanks. You can always ask the seller to provide a longer one which they most always will do.

    Hey Dreegez! I have an idea for you about the loop fitment... Why don't you weld the loop aligned with the upper tubes, so you can have a straight line from tank to tail?

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  7 років тому +1

      It should be a straight line i the end, unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean.

    really looking forward towards how all of this is going to play out. and the all leather seat was a good touch. when the hoop is painted bright red the two will look great... lastly do you plan to strip down the engine after the hoop or are you gonna do the shocks???

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  7 років тому

      I think I'm going to pause on the rear end whilst I wait for the new shocks as I'll need them before fitting everything in, so yeah I'll jump on the engine but I'm in 2 minds about stripping it down. It's had new rings so not sure if I'd need to. Also in 2 minds about powder coating the engine.

    • @pedrusniloyrozario6564
      @pedrusniloyrozario6564 7 років тому

      For The Bold - dreegez I think you should powder coat it... After cleaning it up nicely with a new paint job it will look brand new...

    Thanks for your videos. I just bought an 81 Honda CX500 Custom. I didn't realize the front tire (19') was so much bigger than the rear (16'). Since I would like spokes, could you recommend the size of the wheels (thinking two 17 or 18')? Also, the best way to get or make the spoked rims? Thank you so much!

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  6 років тому

      Yes the custom rears are a lot smaller to give it that cruiser look. The standard rears like on mine are 18”. As for spokes, try cognito Moto or see if there are any standard CX out there with spokes that has drums.

    Do you recommend getting the seat first and then ordering the hoop? I would imagine it's easier that way because then I'll know how long of a hoop or if I need it to curve up in the back or not.

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  5 років тому +1

    have you tried a photoshop of the rear end with the dual shocks, pictured from behind? isn't it going to be to wide for the skinny wheel, considering that the seat and tank combo is quite narrow?

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  7 років тому

      The duals will be mounted in the same place as the originals, I won't be moving the lower mounts as 1 is on the swingarm and the other is on the wheel itself. Hopefully it'll look right, but I will be changing the tyres.

    • @cosinus_square
      @cosinus_square 7 років тому

      are you going for looks only? or performance?

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  7 років тому

      I won't be increasing the performance of the engine, only reducing the weight of the bike, but I'll be adding a tyre that's safe to ride with.

    May I ask is the seat marketed for cg125? is the seat 53cm long? Ive been considering the same seat for my build. mine is a cbx750p which is very similar in terms of shape with cx500

    • @forthebold

    I'm looking to do my seat the same way, do I need a hoop length of 270mm? I can't find any for sale with that length unless I spend 4X's as much and order a custom or buy off of Dime City.

    Hi There.could I send you a picture of my bike?I am doing the seat and just wondering about your opinion.

  • @AimlessMoto
    @AimlessMoto 7 років тому

    Back of the tank needs to come up 3-4cm from stock, hoop needs to be angled up at the back about 1-2cm from where you have it clamped... this will give you a straight line from the bottom of your seat (where the pleats are) to the front of the tank.... which is what the CX needs to look "right".

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  7 років тому

      I ave been playing with the hoop, my worry is if it stuck up, I'd be going back to the original frame fabrication that stuck up, and that's the bit I din't like about the CX. I've seen previous versions where people meet the tank to the raised rear end, but what they do then is fill in the gap.

    • @AimlessMoto
      @AimlessMoto 7 років тому

      OH! Well if that's the case, do-away with the loop all together, do a bracket to span the two sides of the frame under the seat to give you a place to mount the seat... then simply weld on plates and posts for your shocks to the back of the original hoops. Maybe then do a fender under the back of the seat to hide the plastic bottom. It could also be said that maybe a flat-tracker style seat with no hump and a flat bottom would fit the style better, but I definitely see where you WANT to go with this build :).

    • @forthebold
      @forthebold  7 років тому +1

      It's cool to say. Personally I'm not over keen on these builds that have a massive rear cowl as it kinda detracts the attention and the visual bulk being above the engine. I guess if we all created the same bike it wouldn't be as fun. I hope it hasn't put you off the build much though.

    • @zzzShaolinzzz
      @zzzShaolinzzz 7 років тому

      The proportion to the tank could very well be my issue. It does look good from the top, it's the side that doesn't do it for me. I do agree however that is a personal choice. I just went a different route with my CB450 build :)
