This is a clear and professional video that gives me all I need for redoing my worn Old Town fiberglass canoe. Thanks!
Stumbled on your channel researching canoe restoration..glad I did! Looks like you have some great content and awesome adventures!
that's a awesome job Jan,looks like a new canoe, look forward to your canoeing trips
Thanks Wallace! I took her out on the river today and she was great! Have a good week, Jen.
This is incredible. Just purchased an older canoe and needed to know exactly how to do this! Again, you area ahead of the curve. Looks great!
Thanks Michael! I was very happy with the result.
Great job, you have given me the itch to fix up my old cannoe from the 1970's, it is in alot rougher condition but getting started is the first step, it won't fix itself.
Hands down the best canoe video! Thorough!
So glad to help Phillip. Thanks for the great comment.
Wow Jen! It turned out really nice!
Thanks Todd!
After alot of thinking i desided that a canoe was the right craft for me. I knew that buying a used canoe was the way to go, and I would need to maybe fix part of it. So this was a great video on how to repair my future canoe. The more banged up the cheeper I could maybe get the canoe. So this was a great help.
When I was desiding on what kind of boat I was going to buy a canoe was last on the list. But now that I see that repairs are relatively simple I feel even better I'm going this way.
Thank you
Patrick
Came across this in 2020...
Great job assessing everything beforehand & planning out your course of action 😃👍
The best canoe restoration I’ve seen! Well planned and executed. Will be restoring my 16’ canoe using Jen’s instruction. Thanks!
So glad this was helpful Gary!
Fantastic job. I have 2 canoes, a 16 foot Indian River and a 12 ft. Solo that was rescued from a junk pile. Got a couple of 4 day solo river trips coming up this Spring here in Southeast Louisiana. Once again great job, a beautiful outdoors woman with a beautiful canoe. Enjoy and stay safe out there. Love your channel.
Wonderful! Glad you like my content.
Very nice job. Love the logo on the side, really puts a nice touch to it...thanks
Thanks Steve. Ya, it really made a difference in the look of the boat I think.
Outstanding. Thanks for sharing your process & procedures
Awesome job Jen! Love the decal. Migwech
Thanks Kirk. It's really neat.
Looks fantastic and the decal finished it off nice. Cheers
Thanks Steve. I think that decal really completed the look. Jen.
Awesome job!! Gives me the itch to get mine done. Thank your for the video
Turn out so Beautiful...
Great video. We just bought one a few days ago in a very similar condition. Cant wait to work on it now. You did such a great job and your video made it look so doable.
Wow. What an awesome job. You made it so easy that I have confidence to do it myself now. Thank you
Glad this helped!
Fantastic job! Just picked up one for $50 and could use some love. Will definitely use your tricks!
'mornin, Jen; Wonderful find at that price. Great job refurbishing the Gal. She'll glide with easy now. Thanks & Looking 4ward 2 the up-coming paddle. ATB Terry God Bless
Thanks Terry!

Turned out beautiful.
Thanks Buckrun11!
Very cool! You did a great job it looks great.
Thanks James! I had a lot of fun working on it.
Excellent video love that colour
Thanks Ephraim Vivian. The colour was very good. It was what I imagined.
Great video, thanks for marking it .
Great finish great to see women with such interests well done
This is great! I'm restoring an old canoe to use (hopefully extensively) this summer, and this video was a great resource for me. Thanks so much for posting this. Also, your Canadian (Ontario?) accent made this instructional video oddly comforting, and immediately relatable; I'm sure that you don't know what to think about that, but I assure you that it's a compliment. Happy paddling!
Thanks! So glad this helps you! Best of luck with your restoration. I never knew I had an accent. LOL. Yes, I'm from Ontario.
excellent repair job jen you looked like a real pro, beautiful little canoe the decals on each side is fabulous, good job and a great video , enjoy your canoe have a good week,:):)
Thanks Edward! Have a good week too!
Youre really beautiful. Loved the paint/restoration job.
Great repair! You really should be wearing a mask though. Fiberglass dust is very toxic and once it gets into your lungs, it stays there for a long time.
Thanks!
Great video, thanks for making it!
I am getting a 1985 Colman canoe tomarrow! Thanks for this video i will be restoring my own canoe!
Very cool! Have fun.
nice job on the canoe, nice decal and placement.......think I'll do seats like those using bit of maple and some strapping like that on my old rig......... cheers
That would look awesome hunt4fish.
really helpful. Just picked up an old town Penobscot 16ft canoe for £400. Bargain in UK as they are valued £2000 new. It’s ready to go in the water now, but like sand and paint it. Like you i’ll keep it green. Then need to think of a name. Wife’s grandfather was in the royal navy, so might name it after him.
Nicely done!
Thank you!
I have done the same job 6 odd times on 4 different canoes. I repaired damage and made some skid plates out of fiberglass cloth and resin . Some canoes were fiberglass and some kevlar . The 15 ft novacraft bobspecial weighs 37 lbs with ash trim and my 16.5 ft langford nahanni weighs 43 lbs. I paid $500 for the langford as it was a former rental and needed a flotation chamber rebuilt .It has aluminum trim . The fiberglass canoes have been generic ( unknown ) and scott. Not sure of weights but they were used as 'droppers' so weight isn't as important. One had to be heavily repaired ( 2 yds of strand cloth and gallon of resin ) right in the bush from winter snow load damage. But man is that hull stiff now.The strand cloth really eats up the resin . Was planning to put a yd of cloth on the other side of the yoke but ran out of resin. A job for the next trip in .
I recommend buying a yoke and replacing that center thwart . Seats look ok and are replacements anyway . I replaced handles on my nahanni from scrounged maple I got from a futon frame someone was throwing out. A lot of work needing a table saw and router .I have some pics of these jobs but never bothered to shoot video .
I'll probably do some more work on it next Spring. Sounds like you have lots of experience repairing canoes.
Very nicely done!
Thanks Efish3!
Great video! Thanks.
Amazing job!
+David Vasquez Thanks David!
Very nice job! The new graphics are cool...
I thought they were great too.
Happened upon your video after watching another channel (👎) and I was guessing you were about 22 years old. 🙃 Watched a few more of your videos and found the one on your ablation!!! Amazing journey! You are delightful and so informative and YES! ... YOUR canoe restoration was THE BEST and above the rest! Take good care of yourself up there! LJ - NW Florida 🌴👍❤️
I got a canoe from a friend and was wondering how I could restore it, so thanks for your video, it's really inspired me to go for it :)
So glad this video was helpful
Really useful for me restoring an old Scott 16 prospector - thank you!
beautiful job jen, all trained up and ready to work at the boat yard lol. Should give years of good reliable service, take care
Thanks Kris! You making any boats this year?
2 canoes to repair and a dory to fiberglass this year. I have five boats when I mentions building another the warden gets wild, lol. Soon though a build or refit, I got my eye on a old bayliner that has been sitting in a guys yard a long time, years. Like to refit her with a dieasel that I have.
That'll keep you really busy!
no jen that's some of stuff ill be at while I'm taking a spell, lol
Hi what was the name of the boating supply store that you mentioned at the beginning?
Nice to see a nice young lady tackle a job like this ! And it came looking like a champ.
Thanks
Hi, I was wondering are you still happy with the polyurethane that you used on the canoe? I’m currently working on mine and I want to know if your finish has lasted and is there anything you would do different? Great video. You inspired me to get to work on mine. Thank you.
Awesome job and great video. Just. Curious how the paint has held up without a clear/varnish coat? Also how much of the paint did the 2 coats end up going through? I just picked up a 16 ft fiberglass canoe that I want to replace the thwarts, yoke and maybe the gunwales with wooden ones which I prefer the look of.
Yeah...you need to know you have HANDS DOWN the best canoe restoration video!
Thanks!
Great job it's a thing of beauty
Thanks!
👍 Great job 👍
Very nice job….thank you for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!
2019 just watched 3 times awesome work helps me a lot.. did the paint lasted ever since?
Still going strong.
Hi there. Love the restoration. I wanted to ask if you know if this process would work on a plastic canoe
I'm impressed! Well done young lady!!! You took a difficult job and made it look easy. How well is the paint holding up?
Nice job!
Heyy! Loved the video, we just got a canoe and this was extremely helpful. I have 2 questions.. did you end up using the 2 quarts or just 1 and do you think this paint is also good for the interior?
One thing: I'd take the tape of BEFORE the paint drys. Once the paint drys to the tape it can bear to get it off cleanly.
Otherwise, awesome video!
What do you think it's worth now
since you did such a beautiful job?
Great job Jen, hard work, taking your time and doing it right the first time makes for job well done!!! Just thought I'd check, I have a Scott square stern 11.5' that needs a little attention do you hire out for canoe repair???? Lol. just teasing!! Take care and keep safe, Kevin.
Hey, if you drive her down my way, I just might! I got all the stuff to do it now!
Great video! I have a old plastic 17ft Coleman canoe. Not in terrible shape but could use some body work and a paint job. Do you know or know of any videos/good sources I could watch to do so?
Hey, Great job with the canoe !!! I would like to know where did you order your vinyl sticker please :)
Just curious, Miss Yam, did you find a serial # plate on that canoe anywhere? If so, did you make a note of it. I believe it is a Mohawk canoe. The SRL number would start with the letters MMN if it is. Great job on the restoration.
where did you get the transfer tape and the methyl? Enjoyed
I'm restoring an old 16 ft. Scott canoe and was wondering how much paint did you eventually use for 2 coats? I also live in the NCR and bought the exact same type of paint from The Chandlery (just one quart), but I'm thinking I will be more than one quart.
great video! Just watched 4 years after you posted and it was very helpful. Did you put any type of coating on top of the paint/was it a marine type paint that is more water resistant?
Glad you liked it. It is marine paint
You should wear a dust mask when sanding. Even when you're are working outdoors. You don't want to breath epoxy dust in. It's pretty lethal.
I know. That was a mistake I made. The wind was blowing the other way but I should've had one on for sure.
Lovely boat and a useful instructional video. Where'd you order your decals from?- Martin
I got them from Signarama in Ottawa. I had an independant individual design the text and I sent the file to Signarama to be cut into vinyl.
Thanks, Jen. :-)
Have heard good things about that paint in water craft applications.
Really beautiful 😍 🤩 👌 ❤️
Those seats will last you for a long time. No rush. 🇨🇦👍
I live in ottawa and im trying to figure out what to use on my fiberglass canoe, how convenient. The boat store should sponsor you.
Interesting that you used epoxy instead of the usual fibreglass repair . Your repair looked a lot easier and less messy than messying around with fibreglass. I acquired a canoe many years ago that was a piece of crap to begin with but I only need it twice a year to go out and put a foot valve on in the spring and to take it off in the fall for a total of one hours use per year. Does the epoxy stand up as long as fibreglass?
Hello I'm restoring an old canoe and just wondering how much paint did you use.
Nice job, Ty
Enjoyed your tutorial on solo canoe. How has the paint and chip repair held up? I am planning on making some repairs to my canoe.
It is fine except for the new scratches I have given it from use. I will do another touch up this year or next.
Quality video
Hi, How do I go about getting a nice decal like that? Where did you get it printed? Thanks
Thank you!!
Damn Yam, when you fumbled that can of paint when you were pouring it in the tray, you made me jump. My heart skipped a beat. Good save though Jen. The canoe looks great. The decals really set it off. How did you get so talented. I bet you took auto-body in HS, right? doug
Thanks! Ya, my heart skipped a beat when I almost dumped the paint. LOL. No, I never took auto-body. I am self taught through watching videos, reading manuals and asking a few folks that have done similar work for tips and tricks.

Good Catch!!!!
How much paint did you use? I have a 14 ft FB that has been sanded down and now needs some paint BUT one pint is 17$ and the large can (gallon or 4 lt) is 35$. I dont want to buy a big can if I dont need to but will definitely need a minimum of 2 coats. What would you suggest?
I used about 940 ml = about 2 pints. I hope this helps.
Very nice
Do you recommend using some sort of mask when sanding at all?
Oh, just saw the comment below, sorry :)
How did the paint hold up? How long did it last ?
I just bought a fiberglass canoe that is need of a paint job and am considering mimicking your exact steps.
Still going strong!
outstanding thanks Now I know what to do
This weekend I'm gonna continue to sand down my canoe. The weather is gonna be great according to the forecast so I might even get the first layer of paint on it.
May 2021 and still relevant!🤣 thanks for this👍🏼
LOL. Glad it helped
Great job and well done. It's been a few years now...how'd the paint job age?
Very well.
Great job Jen. Just a kind suggestion, next time you are sanding fiber glass you should be wearing a mask. There's some nasty stuff in that dust. Later and all the best.....Barry P.S. welcome to the Trappers Chat.
Thanks Barry. Yes, I really should have worn the mask. I looked around for one and gave up when I couldn't find it. I should've stopped and gone to the store.
Nice!
StandsWithABeer Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Nice ! I'm fixing a canoe right now for moose hunting . Plus your cute 😉👍
Let me know how your canoe restoration goes. Best of luck with the moose this year.
TheWildYam it's coming along good. N just have to say you look cute wit your glasses 😉👍
Great vid. Did you use one or two quarts of paint?
Just one of the paint cans you saw there :)
TheWildYam Thanks. I just bought an oldtown pack boat and need to do some restoration. I appreciate your help:-)
Have fun!
Lo9ks fantastic do you still have it
No dust mask or respirator while sanding? Otherwise most helpful
Yes, my error. Definitely important to wear a mask. Thanks for watching!
Iliked/ added you to my FB timeline... Thanks. I have a 50 yo thin wall fiberglass canoe from Moorhead MN. Floated Sunday S Platte R. Will add videos to here and FB
+Michael Sullivan Thank you!!
Would to know how much paint it ended up taking? Did you have to crack into that second quart?
No just one.
@@TheWildYam Awesome thanks! About to start a similar project, and great idea with the decal. Might do that myself.
Great job , Jen. Wear a mask next time when sanding. Came out looking beautiful!
What paint did you use?
Hey, where did u order the transfer decal from? Thnx
Just got it from a print shop
