  • Historical gold maps provide insights into the geological features and gold mining operations of the past, helping prospectors to determine ideal locations to search for gold. If you’re just starting out and are seeing some of the terms and features displayed on these maps for the first time, things can get a little confusing.
Today we’re going to take a look at some of these features, what they mean and what they look like, so you can have a better understanding of these old gold maps. You will find many of these features displayed on modern gold maps as well.
If you’re interested in checking out goldfields maps, head over to my website historicalgoldmaps.com.au, which provides an online directory of historical goldfields maps, all free to view online.
You’ll also find some of my all-time favourites as huge high quality prints, which have been professionally restored, enhanced, and styled as a set.

Thank you, so my maps I have show shallow leads and shallow workings, can shallow leads still be detected or does that indicate to deep?

Great stuff young lady, you read those legends like a pro. I have ten of them old Victorian gold maps myself, dating back to 1858. I will frame them one day. There is also a totally different unmineralised indicator/marker bed found in the eastern Victorian goldfields in the Glen Wills to Haunted Stream fields. I found it to be case over twenty years ago. Once you recognise it you never forget it. Found it on seven different fields over that way. Happy to show you it one day. Keep up the great work and one day you will hit the jackpot yourself. Regards Rory, Tasmania.

Rory - long time no see. I was driving past your place a week ago. Are you still creating those masterpieces of yours? I've been living in Ballarat for the last 10 years. Regards, Steve Sorrell

You are right Steve, time flies, last time I was in Ballarat, 2006? I spotted an unmapped deep lead outcropping in a cutting on the new freeway works just east of Ballan. The place is alive with gold. Still knocken up the art mate. Done nearly forty now. I have got micromounts coming out my arse waiting to be used in future projects. Just found a lovely telluritic quartzie from Prince Lyell. For the record I only watch this site to listen to her voice, she has the sexiest voice on the tube and no doubt would make for an excellent offsider out in the scrub. Take care mate, regards Rory.

What about a video on how the gold economy was regulated. E.g is it correct the gold was mandatorially purchased by the crown using local pound notes (i.e. printed at will), shipped to london and used to pay off massive war debts (real money)
