Rather than most modern games where you point the stick in the direction you want to go relative to the screen, tank controls point you forward in a direction relative to your character, so you don't lose momentum or wind up going in a totally different direction between screens. That said, they're rough to get used to, for sure! Don't worry about things being a little clunky at the start. I'm really looking forward to seeing you play this game!
The clunky controls also help with being a bit more helpless, instead of allowing control like an action game would, but the shifting (dutch/odd) camera angles really have become a lost art.
I've never been a horror fan but Silent Hill was one of those gaming experiences that stayed with me. The way the game relies on psychological oppression rather than jump scares was an experience. Especially in 1999. I beat it purely to prove to myself I could.
i'm totally with you on that plank thing, it blended right into the cliff! lmao i love the ambience of silent hill, it's so unique. it's got an industrial, offsetting vibe that knows how to overstimulate you and stress you out. but it can also have a melancholic peacefulness to it as well, akira yamaoka is a goat for sure, idk where he thinks up these sounds but they create such a unique atmosphere

The most realistic part of this game is an american cop seeing an unkown white guy running around, asking if he doesnt carry a gun, then offering one of hers. Love the series! I remember playing Silent Hill with my younger brother in my dark "basement bedroom". I was 17, and my brother was 11. Few times have we been that scared 👻 We grew up with gaming, from the Atari 2600 in the early 80's, to the Nintendo in -86 and PS1 in -92. But my understanding of good graphics was very limited in the mid 90's. I remember thinking that FF7 was remarkable, I mean it was 3d!? That was Nov -97. Next milestone for me was Metal Gear Solid (Sep -98), a game which blew my mind. It was then one of the best games ever for me (with ff7). So when Silent Hill came in July -99 my concept of graphics was based on MGS. I thought Silent Hill looked really good 😅 Also, I remember games being really expensive in the 90's. About the same price as today, but with inflation its insane prices 😆 So we would go and rent games for a weekend 🤣

This game is an absolute masterpiece. I remember having it imported months before it came out in the UK. Had to play it in black and white so when I got the PAL release it was like a new game playing it in colour.
I loved this when it first came out; I must have completed this a dozen times. And as everyone else is saying, the CG intro is a must-watch - it helps frame the story and atmosphere, rather than presenting spoilers. So, watch it.

Sadly you were experiencing a glitch where the radio constantly makes sound. Normally it should be completely silent when there are no living enemies around, but you had multiple sequences where it just got stuck making a loud, awful sound. Probably made it way more stressful, lol.

Also, I love how they turned the weak rendering power of the PS1 into an advantage by hiding everything in fog and darkness which just make the game creepier.
This is the pinnacle of all survival horror games. I played it in March of 1999 just after it was released (I was 14). I have been hooked eversince. There is some kind of bug going on with the radio. The ringing sound should be stopping when you leave the vicinity of an enemy. It's not a huge deal, but it is kind of taking away from some of the signature ambiance that this game is so well known for. There are points when the game should go silent (like when you first walked i to the school), but your radio is still ringing.

So glad you're considering playing SH2 the original (there's a really good fanmade HD mod for it, Silent Hill Enhanced Edition--do NOT play the butchered HD collection), because even if worries about how Bloober Team handles the themes turn out to be unfounded, the game might lose something with higher production values. (For example, SH2 famously has "bad" voice acting, but arguably the flat affect of the characters creates a dreamlike, Lynchian atmosphere that can't be deliberately replicated)
The DEImake is confirmed trash. Literally yet another TLOU x RE4R style handholdy UE5 knockoff, with Sweet Baby Inc connections and paid DLC day 1. I seriously do not get the constant bashing of the OG SH's voice acting. It is damn brilliant, more nuanced than people give credit for. The story trailer for the nu-SH2 totally ruined the iconic scene with Maria.
I assure you that SHs voice acting was not bad on purpose or based on direction. It is just a coincidence that people associate it as some form of genius when really it was just bad because barely anyone in those days were good at acting within the game industry, it's the same scenario with the 2nd and 3rd... Which is why I prefer the HD collections voice acting.

There's always one near the start of every new area and some can be a nightmare if you miss it. Also, the game doesn't tell you but there's an inventory cap of 200 on ammo. Anything you pick up after 200 disappears so don't be shy about using some of it. Also it seems like your radio is glitchy. It keeps staying on when you're in rooms with no enemies, like the doghouse house and when you died at the school it was still on in the title screen. I don't know how to fix that but it's definitely a cause for unnecessary worry. Lol. Good luck in this peaceful resort town.

I’ve experienced this game a couples of days and, my only crashes that I remembering experiencing is at the church ⛪️, at the Bridge and at the endgame, I had to turn all enhancement to get trough those spots , but after that I turned enhancement back after every part, good game, I remember playing it at a friends house, but I actually didn’t play it, but tried to help with the puzzles, but I was so afraid of this game. We usually play it at night with the lights off, we probably got as far as the church section and never picked it up again. Until a couple a days back.
Boy this brings back some memories as I last played it 25 years ago. .....I didn't see that plank this time around to the "scarecrow key" either. It really blended into the surrounding graphics so don't at all feel bad for not spotting it! If you get the chance Amber, I'd definitely recommend playing the first Parasite Eve which was like a Resident evil game with RPG elements and a unique and great battle system.

I never played Silent Hill 1 but I've played a couple of the other games, and I love the theme and setting. I'm not a big horror fan in general but Silent Hill is an exception, I really like the style and aesthetic of the games (at least the ones I've played). I liked the Silent Hill movie as well. Anyway, excited to see you play through this and especially to see Silent Hill 2 (which I played back in the day but got too scared to finish lol)

I think you're doing great! Figuring out tank controls (again) is tough in the beginning, but I can already see that you're feeling more comfortable already. This was the first proper scary and unnerving game I played back then, truly a different type of horror and alternative to Resident Evil, back then I remember I got to the final boss but never beat it but I actually fully completed it for the first time about a year or 2 ago and it still holds up, still unsettling as fcuk! 😅
ahh this is great. from dark souls games to this classic. its my favorite. i cherish the childhood memories of my dad renting this game for me when it came out! i hope youll check out the rest of the team silent titles. and the remake looks quite beautiful as well.
Epic series, but it leans way more into personal, psychological horror and madness than RE. Be prepared. 😨 This is the start of the era where games began to be able to actually show scary stuff with graphics, rather than just suggest it. Interesting to see the beginnings that will lead to RE 7, Outlast and the like.
It took me five attempts and getting the game guide to realise that that plank was there to get that key, so I feel your frustration with that…and that was playing first time around.
Have fun! Silent Hill 1 is my favorite one in the series, and it absolutely nails psychological horror to a frightening degree. Always leaves me feeling shooketh after playing it. Enjoy!
Random thing for future titles in the series: there's some neat mods for the PC versions that act as "psuedo-remasters" to enhance the visuals/fidelity a bit without impacting the gameplay much, if at all. I do recommend, but also note it's not mandatory to get the games to run on PC or anything like that! Just a suggestion based on what other content creators have spoken about regarding the ports and their PC mods! Hope you've been well Amber!

I’ve experienced this game a couples of days and, my only crashes that I remembering experiencing is at the church ⛪️, at the Bridge and at the endgame, I had to turn all enhancement to get trough those spots , but after that I turned enhancement back after every part, good game, I remember playing it at a friends house, but I actually didn’t play it, but tried to help with the puzzles, but I was so afraid of this game. We usually play it at night with the lights off, we probably got as far as the church section and never picked it up again. Until a couple a days back.
Yeah! I'm so excited! These are my favorite games! Parts 1,2,3,4 are the best! Silent Hill has an amazing atmosphere.❤

Boy this brings back some memories as I last played it 25 years ago. .....I didn't see that plank this time around to the "scarecrow key" either. It really blended into the surrounding graphics so don't at all feel bad for not spotting it!
If you get the chance Amber, I'd definitely recommend playing the first Parasite Eve which was like a Resident evil game with RPG elements and a unique and great battle system.
I just finished your FF7 series and now i will watch this game that i am super interested in for the first time with you, that is just as exciting as watching you play my favourite core-game(FF7remake).
I never played Silent Hill 1 but I've played a couple of the other games, and I love the theme and setting. I'm not a big horror fan in general but Silent Hill is an exception, I really like the style and aesthetic of the games (at least the ones I've played). I liked the Silent Hill movie as well. Anyway, excited to see you play through this and especially to see Silent Hill 2 (which I played back in the day but got too scared to finish lol)
I think that this radio noise is kinda broken. Ive boot up my psx copy and it just made noise near enemies. when in next room it was silent.
Even though I'm a huge fan of the series, I've never watched a full playthrough of the first Silent Hill. Can't wait to follow it as you play :)
Never done Silent Hill and not interested in playing it myself. However, I did enjoy watching you play. Glad it's only an hour long, creepy game. I hope to see more, but according to your post, it does not seem likely. Unless I am misreading it and that it just meant that you're not streaming the game and simply will be posting edited play through for us to watch.

I think you're doing great! Figuring out tank controls (again) is tough in the beginning, but I can already see that you're feeling more comfortable already.
Resident Evil and Silent Hill games are all about exploring every part of a map, missing things and going back to places you've already been, so no worries!

This was the first proper scary and unnerving game I played back then, truly a different type of horror and alternative to Resident Evil, back then I remember I got to the final boss but never beat it but I actually fully completed it for the first time about a year or 2 ago and it still holds up, still unsettling as fcuk! 😅

ahh this is great. from dark souls games to this classic. its my favorite. i cherish the childhood memories of my dad renting this game for me when it came out! i hope youll check out the rest of the team silent titles. and the remake looks quite beautiful as well.

Epic series, but it leans way more into personal, psychological horror and madness than RE. Be prepared. 😨 This is the start of the era where games began to be able to actually show scary stuff with graphics, rather than just suggest it. Interesting to see the beginnings that will lead to RE 7, Outlast and the like.

It took me five attempts and getting the game guide to realise that that plank was there to get that key, so I feel your frustration with that…and that was playing first time around.
Have fun! Silent Hill 1 is my favorite one in the series, and it absolutely nails psychological horror to a frightening degree. Always leaves me feeling shooketh after playing it. Enjoy!

Random thing for future titles in the series: there's some neat mods for the PC versions that act as "psuedo-remasters" to enhance the visuals/fidelity a bit without impacting the gameplay much, if at all. I do recommend, but also note it's not mandatory to get the games to run on PC or anything like that! Just a suggestion based on what other content creators have spoken about regarding the ports and their PC mods!
